What are your criteria for accommodations while traveling?
I need a private room and bathroom.
Usually I'm going for local girls, so I get a private room I can bring girls to - so a entire-home AirBnB or a hotel without a weird guest policy.
If I'm not trying to get laid then I'm happy with any kind of hostel bed as long as it doesn't have bedbugs.

Cheap.
That's about it. Beggars can't be choosers.

How cheap though?
For me, usually I like to pay £5-6 or less. Sometimes I'll stretch to £7-8 but it doesn't leave me much left for food on my £10 day budget.

As cheap as it can get wherever I am.

Doesn't mean anything because you haven't said what you consider cheap. If the cheapest is $20 would you stay there or rough it?

Well stating a value doesn't mean much either as the cheapest you can get varies wildly by country.
So yes, I'd stay for $20 in Japan or Sweden or Switzerland if I can't find anything cheaper but I sure as hell would not do it in Vietnam where there's plenty of other options. Roughing it is cool and all for a night, but not for the entire trip.
>dry
>not too dirty
>somewhat functional toilet nearby
>some clean water to wash up
Did some longer hikes and off the beaten track travelling, noticed anything beyond that is both pleasant to have and not essential.

I'm kinda picky: won't sleep in the streets when it's below zero, won't sleep on a concrete. If no sleeping bag, no way I'm sleeping outside, will be looking for a hostel.
