ITT: Worst travel experiences

Man I loved the Terminal, what a comfy movie.
>>
It wasn't so much a terrible experience, but more dissapointing;

I study abroad in Taipei, but i've studied Japanese for 2 years and have alot of Japanese friends. They're some of the kindest, warmest, most friendly people I know, so when i went to visit Tokyo a couple months ago i was expecting society have a similar vibe.

Nope. Coldest, most socially detached city i've ever been. The feeling of isolation is huge. People walk around avoiding eye contact, avoiding all human contact.

Got stuck in Scotland for 2 weeks.

Went to Berlin with my family, ended up being fucking horrible because everyone wanted me to either be the tour guide or be dragged along.
If I didn't do either then I was the asshole buzzkill. One night I just sat outside of a closed Lidl chugging beers because I didn't feel like going back inside yet.
Constant fighting, passive aggressiveness, no privacy at all and in general I felt the need to neck myself several times. Worst week abroad in my life.
In contrast my trip there with a couple of friends instead was awesome.

Greyhound driver left me at the Canada/US border. My customs clearence took about 15 minutes and this asshole just left without me, I stood there with my huge ass bag and backpack. Fortunately a Quickshuttle driver saw the scene and offered me the last seat on the bus for free, so it wasn't that bad.
>>
Had a run of a week where I split up with the girl I was traveling with, got bad food poisoning (lost 5kgs in 2 days), and had my bank card swallowed by an ATM.
Then had one of my best traveling experiences immediately after; the Ma Li Peng pass in Vietnam

Plane diverted to Mexico during 9/11. Got stuck for a week. But, it didn't have to happen at all!

On the tarmac in Miami, still some boarding passengers, but door not even shut or jetway pulled back, pilots told to takeoff asap or be grounded from control tower, right as it all was happening. Well, crew was Mexican based so they made no announcements and made their decision, shut the door, tookoff without a single announcement the whole flight, and headed for their home base selfishly.
Stuck in Cancun for a week at all inclusive. Only had clothes for day trip, as was going down to a meeting, oops. Had to go shopping. Was strange to watch it all on CNN on TVs at the hotel.

>fly Sydney to Los Angeles

Decide to save $500 on the flight by going Air China which has to 6-8 hour stop-overs in China and Japan, then 15 hours to L.A.

It wasn't worth the $500 savings. Should've just gotten a direct flight for the extra money, those stopovers were hell.

It actually sounds fun man

But how is that more expensive than a shitty Delta flight from Sydney to LA (i've done this, it's budget airline, with budget prices)

Spent 8 days in Goteborg Sweden for a destination wedding.

The groom (my brother) was a giant faggot the entire time. Also it was rainy and cold every single day. And this was in the middle of June.

The people and some of their customs got on my nerves.

I'll never return to Sweden. Norway, maybe.

I literally shat myself in Sofia, Bulgaria. While outside, on the way home. Got to my Airbnb after a terrible walk of shame, then the key broke in the lock. Had to call my host who appeared on the scene 20 minutes later, me sitting in front of the door and an awful smell emanating from somewhere. Got kicked out of the Airbnb some hours later because he said he felt uncomfortable with me. So I had to stuff my shit covered jeans into the rucksack, ended up going to a hotel.

Yes, fly via Dallas. Get the A380 which is typically an emptier flight than from LAX which is always full

typically metropolis mentality. Everyone's busy and have no time for you.
I can say so the same with many big cities in East Asia. If you expect open Asian folks, then just go to the farmland.

In 1990 I owed fines to Calgary Transit (didn't pay for C-Train ticket) & the Calgary City Police do annual round-ups for ticket delinquints like me, usually at night.

Got a knock at the door, aw fuck itsa cop, ask for me, I lied and picked a random name, they asked to see ID, say I don't have any, "invited" to sit in patrol car while they query CPIC by radio. It comes back as a USAF soldier awol and wanted out of Montana. Panic! Tell them the truth but cops wouldn't hear of it. Booked on a sat night. No one home to answer my phone calls.

Monday AM i'm transported to Alberta/US border at Sweetgrass, 3 hrs locked in a small rat cage. MP's waiting for me and I figure at long last they'll have a picture to verify and this will end here. Nope! MP's are mindless fucks, they'd been instructed to return with one. So now i'm on a ride to god-knows-where in a foreign country i'd never been to. To their credit the backseat was more comfortable than the Sherrifs van I rode to the border in but the 2 MP's never said a word the whole ride except if I needed to piss.

Hours later brought to a huge air base & put into a clean white jail cell and fed better than Canadian jails i'd been to.

Next day a G-man type comes into my cell and the 1st thing he says is 'that's not him'. Yes!! They were not happy, I was promptly escorted to the front gate and abandoned in a fucking prarie in the middle of winter km's from nearest town, no money & only a light jacket.

Some guy stopped & picked me up & got me into the town of Great Falls. From there I hit the bank machine & had just enough for a bus ticket back to Calgary. Just as I get off the bus 2 cops are waiting for me, ask if i'm xxxxx xxxxx. Yes. I'm promptly rearrested for unpaid tickets. Spent another night downtown as a "guest of the Queen" before finally being allowed to use the phone to call a buddy who came down and paid the $60 fine and get me out.

Lessons learned.
>>
>>1202889
Shit man, I had a friend who flew back international to Calgary just a couple months ago and got locked up almost overnight in their little holding room just for an unpaid C-train ticket.

>Nope. Coldest, most socially detached city i've ever been. The feeling of isolation is huge. People walk around avoiding eye contact, avoiding all human contact.

It's called being the largest metropolis on earth and a place where the "tourist attractions" most people want to see aren't actual tourist traps, they are just the normal busy as fuck places that real Japanese people are carrying out there day in.

Japanese people, even in Tokyo, are kind and friendly as hell once you're in a one on one setting. On the street in the middle of Tokyo though you're just a dumb fuck if you think everyone has time to stand around interacting and making personal connections with millions of other strangers.

Being stuck in in Dublin for 3 days due to baggage handler strikes and my bags lost due to strikes when travelling with Ryan Air, eventually getting a paid ferry to Liverpool to train all the way down to London.

Flying with AirBerlin, the delays I didn't mind thats normal and I think everyone should be patient. However the air crew allowing a ridiculous amount of on board luggage meant all the above stowaways were full by the time I boarded. So I sat with my backpack on my lap for the flight to Budapest.

Lastly one being entirely my fault, getting too drunk before flying back from Belfast and being told they were going to check with the pilot whether they would allow me to fly. Fucking terrifying moment, awaiting whether I will be stuck further in Northern Ireland or not. They eventually allowed me to board.

Was on Malta this January, coldest winter in 30 years. Hostels of course weren't used to this so they didn't have heating. It was colder inside than outside, to the point where you could see your own breath. It was also windy as fuck which made it even worse. The journey home (to Austria) also took 11 hours instead of 5 because of flight delays across Europe

Was in college on spring break. I took a cruise that had a one day stop in Cozumel, Mexico.

I fucked up and forgot to pull out cash on the boat before we went into port so I had to pull out cash at one of the Mexican ATMS. I picked the one next to Senor frogs because it was a touristy area so I thought I would be ok.

In hindsight, this was a terrible place. A week after I get back, I check my account balance to see its at $-800. Since it was a debit card and not a credit card it took almost over a month to get my money credited back. So I didn't have a penny to my name that whole time and was basically eating scraps from my friends.
>>
Was near Beijing for three months working a contract to setup a data center. Easy work, done it before. Actually get done early because we rock and still get paid for three months anyway. 5 of us, 4 go home to the US because they got another contract to work. I got 3 weeks to fuck around, decided to fly to Thailand for two and a half weeks. All is great, multi entry visa for China so no issues coming back and taking my original flight. Also get paid extra for being on-call and a quick flight back if shit storm happens.

Check into hostel because I'm a cheap bastard, first week goes great. Full tourist mode, enjoy watching Aussies get drunk and fight each other over sluts. Second week, things are damn near the same save for Friday night. Local Bangkok police "raid" the hostel because of reports of drugs. I say "raid" because they only hit one room because they know who they are looking for.

My room.

Luckily not looking for me. Go through my shit anyway to make it look good. Three of the four people get arrested for drugs, seems only one was wanted though the other two are just idiots with a need to smoke up. Is cool, they leave the rest of us alone. I shrug it off until three hours later they come back for two more of us because they had been "implicated". Well fuck, not sticking around for this shit. 5 of 8 people in the room arrested and I'm 90% sure they are going to come back for the rest of us. Pack up, head out to find another place to stay.

Get to an expat bar and ask for some help from the expats, tell me to get out of the country ASAP. Police will be looking for you. Well fuck. Call airline, get next plane back to China (Hong Kong), leaves in three hours. Get a lift from an expat on his motorcycle to the airport, exchange contact info, get the hell out of town and make to Hong Kong no problems.

>>
>>1200972

Eh, you're not a special snowflake you cunt. I hate this "pay attention to me" attitude.

It's the same treatment in any huge city. Try NYC and people are accustomed to ignoring everything here. Things that would send most small towns into an uproar.
>>
My worst experience was when I was backpacking in Thailand and decided to visit a ladyboy bar for laughs. One of the patrons there complimented me on my "dainty hands" and kept offering me drinks. I black out and woke up locked in a room surrounded by ladyboys. Most were drugged out and barely there.

I was there for 7 weeks. They put hormones in my food and made me dress up like a girl, wig, makeup, the whole nine yards. I had to listen to what I assumed were sissy hypno tapes, but they were in thai so they didn't really do anything. Eventually I escaped by pretending to be feminized at heart and eager to serve bar patrons. My first night as a working bar girl, after satisfying several well hung clients (yolo), I made my break for it and ran out, chased by muscular ladyboy bouncers. I smacked a man off a scooter, stole it and rode away. I ditched the bike about 50 km away, I had no money, and my visa, passport, ID, etc had all been taken by the bar. I had to freelance sell my boipucci to survive over the next few days as I made my way to the American embassy. The person at the embassy who helped me secure passage out of Thailand sighed and said I was the 5th person this week.

I posted the whole thing in Travel once.

The people are nice, but they are so goddamn polite and reserved it borders on autism. It's like they can't cut up, relax, or express a controversial opinion ever.

The whole "use only what you need, when building a home" thing got on my nerves, like there would be one bathroom in a 5BR house. Tiny fucking shower, no pressure. Floor studs in between rooms. All the dark clothing, and stripes.

IDK, don't wanna shit on Sweden too much. It was the circumstances of the trip that went bad. You would have to pay me a lot of money to live there. I consider Germany/Austria/Switzerland to be superior to Scandinavia in every possible way.

I've been to Tokyo twice. Once in the late-90s, again 5 years ago.
It was a VERY different feeling.
Before the turn of the century, there were friendly cops, jovial evening foot-traffic, and outgoing people who could tell we were lost, who would help, even with limited English, and occasionally students who just wanted to practice their English on us.
It was a lot of fun, and really cool.

Again in the 00s, the whole atmosphere of the city had changed.

I guess Tokyo picked up its real metropolitan feel sometime between those visits.

Was getting picked up in an airport in Hanoi for an early flight to Kuala Lumpur, so had a taxi arranged to pick us up around 4 AM outside our hostel. When we come downstairs the taxi is outside, but the driver is sound asleep. Not a problem initially, but the problem is he never entirely woke up. Over the course of the 30-45 minute drive he would slam his head against the seat, put on cruise control and stick his entire torso outside the window, and suddenly scream in an effort to keep himself awake (he lost consciousness briefly several times regardless). This along with Vietnam already having some of the worst driving conditions, as well as considerable rain that morning, put me in a panic for the entire drive.
