I'll be in Sofia for 3 nights soon. Is there anything you would particularly recommend, sights, bars, restaurants or activities?
I'm going to try and do the free walking tour on the first day to get my bearings and tick of some sights. Also thinking about riding the lift up Vitosha mountain.

Bump for interest. I'm doing the same thing in a few weeks. Also will Sofia in January be insanely cold to someone from Britain?
It's pretty crap, avoid the money changers good luck anon

The free tour is alright and it's gonna do the job.

For beer-related stuff.

for a casual lunch/dinner, fairly inexpensive

a degenerate hipster bar/hostel
Climbing Vitosha right now is going to be an uphill battle, you see the snow we got here.
Still though, if you can handle it, go right ahead.

Yup. It's pretty cold senpai. I can tour you around the city a bit, but mostly you can use the free tour linked below.

Tell me more what you want to see and do and I can help further.

You're wrong on so many levels.
It's not crap and only avoid shady money-changing places that don't have the exchange rate posted, look for the rate table to have "no comission on it", too.

Thanks so much for the tips. Not OP but actually flying to Sofia for four days tomorrow. I was planning on just wearing trainers. Should I be wearing boots? Is it a bad idea/unfeasible to walk from city center to Boyana church? Should I plan on carrying cash or can I get by with a card?

Glad I could help. Boots are a must.
Alone and in this weather? Not feasible and would be dull without commentary on the surroundings.
I'd recommend public transportation, it will get you through the majority of the way there.
Here are the exact coordinates of the trolley stop you need, take trolley number 2.
42.694758, 23.334662
The trolley stop where you need to get off is 42.659194, 23.272698.
Map shows the route from city center to the trolley stop. The red cross is approx church location.
The ticket is 1.60 leva, can be purchased from driver with cash (exact change) or a stand around the bus stops.
It's a piece of paper and there are punchers where you put it (arrow side in) and punch it. That's it.
Most businesses (cafes, shops, etc) will take cards and contactless cards, but cash is always handy. 15 leva/day is fine.
If you need a guide or want to hang out or anything let me know. :)
Alternate route, which I think it's better:
Bus 84
Get in: 42.657922, 23.316034
Get out: 42.649431, 23.264538

Thank you so much for all your help! I'm travelling with a friend so I'm more ambitious about long walks on the outskirts of cities. I'll hit you up here if I have any other questions or a free night. The second bus route in particular looks good. I'd mapped out a walking route on google maps and that area was pretty much dead space outside of the Botanical gardens.

Check out Park Kambanite (lower left on the map) since you're into walking into non-areas of the city. :D
It's definitely worth the visit if you're in Sofia, but I normally don't recommend it to anyone.

Do you have any advice on cool communist era things to see? I like the idea of old communist monuments in the snow.
Also is the museum of socialist art any good?

Not this anon
Went in November and it was great. The outdoor sculptures are cool but also appreciated the paintings in there
