Any /trv/lrs ever been to Ethiopia? I'm pretty enthralled with the history of the place and am thinking about making a trip this year. What have your experiences been?

got aids and starved
Went there this November. Amazing and very diverse place. A tad expensive for independent travel though. I visited all the North plus Harar

it's a place I've always wanted to visit since reading Wilfred Thesiger's Danakil Dairies. He was a great writer of "real" travelling. However, it must be one of the most formidable places on earth ...
Geologically, it's fascinating. Mindboggling landscapes. The Afar triangle (see pic) which looks like a river delta is actually one of the few places on earth where three tectonic plates collide and the north west corner of this, the Danakil Depression is the earth's lowest spot on land and also the place on earth with the hottest average temperature. Sulphur, fumes ... an otherworldly place
No way would I contend with the tribulations and dangers, but please do post your pics when you get back
I went spring 2015 to Ethiopia, my sister lived in Addis for about 2yrs. I'd recommend no more than 2 or 3 days in Addis, that's plenty. It's not the most exciting place in any way.
We went hiking in the Simien mountains and to Lalibela, in addition to Addis.
I think it's a great place to visit, nice food, nice climate and nice people. It all depends on what you expect from your trip
It's not dangerous but expect to be ripped off alot. Also beware of the women they lie constantly.
I somehow read the title as "Estonia" and was very confused reading this thread

i only hear from friends that it's amazing... they 'smuggled' some food for me to on their way out, still can remember the taste, so good.
