I've been hearing how some people would skip a night of sleep so that they could sleep throughout a long flight, but all I can think is that it would aggravate the situation - especially if you have trouble sleeping on a plane.
How many of you have done this? Has it worked out to your favor?

Done it a couple of times but best done if you aren't responsible like when traveling with your parents, obviously you don't want to fall asleep in the airport and miss your flight. It's fairly effective and if you're lucky you can sleep through it completely

sleeping pills and staying up m8. its [current year] after all
I've done this with an 7 hr flight and 8 hr layover after.
Short story: I ended up not sleeping much on the flight, and crashing at Singapore airport. I found one of those sleeping chairs, and fell asleep on that. Missed my connecting flight, and had to pay $200 for another one.
I have an ambien prescription, airplane wine puts me out for the whole atlantic

Depends on how much of an irresponsible shit you are. I´ve skipped nights sometimes - mostly on onwards flights - and it always worked out. Met plenty of people though who tried to and missed their flights.
Generally, it´ll let you skip the boredom of a long haul, but it´s still missing sleep. You´ll have to make it up with sleeping at your hotel.
As everyone just said, you can miss a flight pretty easily when waiting for it to be boardable.
I always take a pill before taking off. I also calculate when should I start sleeping to make the most out of it(if I'm arriving to destination at 9 am, won't be the same as 9 pm).
