Gf and me decided spontaneously to go for a week to Oman. It was her idea and I don't know anything about this country.

Anyone of you guys recently been there and can give me some tips where to go, do's and don'ts?

We are really into photography, beautiful landscapes, wildlife and getting to know their culture.
>>
You will have a great time. Just don't do something stupid like public displays of affection and don't behave like jackasses in general.

And no public transport but hiring a car/driver is easy.
>>
Spent 2 weeks there last month. Rented a car and drove around the north. Only regret was not going south to Salalah, which I hear is a must-see. Well, that just means I'll have to go back. Hopefully when the situation with Yemen clears up. Also the enclave in UAE is apparently incredible, the northernmost one not the island enclave.

My favorite places were Wadi al Shab and Sur. Muscat I didn't fall in love with. In any case, it's an absolutely beautiful country. The best part was just driving around and seeing what came up. The mountains, the coast, the desert, the wadis, etc. The country has it all if you're a nature lover.

Not much to say in terms of "don't do" this or that. Just know that Omani people are ultra-conservative, so be careful with your girl. Be on your best behavior in public and you'll have a good time. If you or your GF have any specific questions, ask away.
>>
This is probably really obvious, but if anyone asks if you're married, say you are, you just don't do name changes in your home country.

Rent a car. It's not expensive and gas is almost free. My GF car camped around the mountains and coast, then took a boat to Musandam. You probably don't want to sacrifice 3 days to see Musandam, though you're missing out.
Highlights:
-Swimming in Wadi Shab. 11/10 travel experience
-Walking around the oasis in Wadi Beni Khalid
-All the forts. Each one was cooler than the previous.
-Driving up random wadis at night to camp
-Grand Mosque in Muscat. Opera house was nice too.

We never encountered a scenario where our unmarried relationship mattered. We didn't stay in any hotels so maybe they ask? No idea. It's a very progressive country anyway.

The forts really are so much fun to run around. If only all Arabic countries preserved historic landmarks this well.

Oh, that's Wadi Tiwi IIRC.

Here's the Qaboos Mosque.
>>
If you get bored in Oman before the week's oit, I reccomend hoping over to Bahrain. Flights are cheap, but it is a small island so you can see all of their forts and tourist stuff in a few days. Not worth it for a trip to the country alone
>>
>>1199763
>high risk country

Back to /pol/ with you, edgelord.
>>
>>1199763
The only news-worthy thing to happen in Oman in the past 50 years was a bloodless in-palace coup in which Qaboos overthrew his own father. He is now so popular and well-loved by his people it's actually freaky. His plans for modernizing the country while preserving cultural heritage were hugely successful and are a model for the entire world.

human rights are overrated, right?
>>
>>1199975
Check the Dubai post and see what an Indian and another expat had to say about the human rights thing
>>
>>1199975
Oman has none of that my dude
>>
>>1200003
thats why i would never go there. i just dont get in my head why people want to go. there is so many beautiful places with nice people in this big world.. and op wants to go to oman... why
>>
>>1200007
It's a scary world outside the basement. You're right that you should never step out.
>>
>>1200007
Shit man, I completely messed up my post

When I meant "There is none of that", I meant there is none of the things that Dubai/Qatar has

Oman is the total opposite

Oman is a peaceful, prospering nation, that has beautiful idyllic scenery, amazing culture, and the nicest people you'd meet. They have none of the arrogance/cruelty the other Gulf Arabs have
>>
>>1200014
So there aren't South and SEA workers everywhere?
>>
>>1200033
There are. Lots of Indian/Pakis, lots of Philipinos. But there's no reason to assume they're treated as slaves like in UAE/Qatar. There's a movement in Oman toward acceptance of Asians and acknowledgement of the important work they do.
Having said that, they are treated as outsiders, and they earn shit wages.
I spent the night at the squat-house of some Pakistani expats who worked as builders and electricians in the nearest city. They told me they earned about $12 USD per day, which is horrible considering how expensive it is to live in Oman. All the same they gave me a place to sleep, shitloads of food, and gave me a ride in their boat. I tried to press $30 on them but they firmly refused. Incredibly nice people.
Actually >>1199724 is a photo of the village they're squatting in. Omanis abandoned the town because it isn't accessible by road, and the government gave them all nice condos in Khasab.
>>
>>1200155
>But there's no reason to assume they're treated as slaves like in UAE/Qatar.

They are treated no different than UAE and Qatar and it's not like slaves.

i am not scared, i just like to be surrounded by degenerated people who want me and especially my gf to follow their retarded rules. but as i said, the world has enough other places to visit, which is why i dont understand how someone could pick this place.
>>
>>1200424
I went with my girlfriend. We told everyone we weren't married. Nobody gave a damn. She rocked a tank top around Muscat and swam in a bikini. We fucked on a beach. We didn't expect anyone to give a fuck about us or our white privilege. And they didn't.
Maybe do a little traveling and you'll find yourself less ignorant.
>>
>>1200424
You're not American by any chance?
>>
>>1200014
>They have none of the arrogance/cruelty the other Gulf Arabs have

FWIW, I have some friends who are Kuwaiti Arabs, they are extraordinarily warm and decent folks. Maybe you are painting with a brush that is slightly broader than needs be.
>>
>>1200496
It is a mixed bag I agree

I've been to Riyadh, and met some of the nicest people. Me and some mates (one of them is India) went to Dubai then Riyadh, and found people were nice to us, even to my Indian friend, who was worried people would be dicks to him.

Arabs are in general hospitable and friendly people, just there are some arrogant up-tight, money crazed pricks who seem to have set a tone
>>
>>1200911
The "fact" that most Gulf Arabs are shit people is a meme. I think it's largely due to ones that people encounter outside the Gulf, or other Muslims that get lumped in with them.
>>
>liberal white females
>not scared of traveling to foreign countries, including ones that are pretty dangerous
>will even go to countries where women are treated like subhumans

>right-wing males
>have something critical to say about any foreign country, even the relatively safe ones
Jesus Christ, I thought you guys were supposed to have balls.
>>
>>1200915
That, and the rich ones CAN be somewhat aloof if they do not know you. But I have never had an Arab do worse than ignore me, and have met with some extreme kindness from some of them when traveling.
>>
>>1199685

I'm actually starting to look into Oman and I'm very interested. What's there to do there? Just drive around the desert and check out old forts? If I bring my lady do I have to be super discreet with her?

Also, how's the food?
>>
>>1199685

If you see anyone behaving gay, report to the police as it is a capital crime to be gay, and doing nothing when you see it is against the law.

Also, dont drink alcohol, watch pornography, or show frustration in public as all of these are crimes. Avoid road rage.

Do try not to lose your wife from sight when you are there as well. Because the line between tourist and slave is a stolen passport.

If your wife gets raped, be sure that there are at least 3 men who are willing to give testimony in her favor, otherwise she will be jailed for adultery.
>>
>>1201279
>>1201272
This is for you too.

At least its not pakistan.
>>
>>1201279

So what you're saying is that it's not chiller than the rest of the Gulf states?
>>
>>1201279
What constitutes "gay" behavior?

I realize that's probably very obvious to a lot of people, but you can't tell with brown people.

I've actually had brown people call me a "fag" while caressing me. And I wasn't even being blatantly gay; I just said that I don't disagree with same-sex marriage, and I said this in a country where such speech is allowed.
>>
>>1201280

I didn't realize I was being baited. Middle-eastern countries treating women and homosexuals differently is nothing new.
>>
>>1201279
Guys, I was born in Oman, and this is bait
>>
>>1201441
Oman is an exceptional Middle Eastern country

One of the most inclusive, tolerant, and friendliest people you'll meet
>>
>>1201444
>>1201442
Now I'm not sure if these posts are legit, or if they're just counter-bait to make potential /trv/ tourists lower their guard.

Either way, the original bait worked.

>>1201432
Even though it was bait, to answer your question, the only gay behavior is being a bottom. A lot of normal hetero actions between Arabs will look gay to Americans. Like holding hands and piggyback rides. And there is a lot of low key actual homosexuality in Muslim countries but the men still don't consider themselves gay
>>
>>1201524
Do you have any further recommendations on what to see and do there?
Have never really considered Oman before this thread.

Also with the war in Yemen does this affect the security in Oman? Are there a lot of refugees?
>>
Go for it OP, it's the Arab country with the least probability of getting beheaded for looking funny at someone's donkey wife. The landscapes are pretty nice too.
