I like the Udvar air and space out by Dulles airport and couple visit a couple more times, and used to live in D.C. But, the museum I can return to over and over is natural history. I just love the rocks and gems. Of course some of the cooler things I've seen over the years were in the temporary exhibits. One of my favorites was one I stumbled in on called the history of the piano "Piano 300" with musical scores from Mozart, Duke Ellington, and other greats, and I remembered being impressed by the crystals on Liberace's piano. A lot of great photography exhibits over the years. And the "Art of Video Games" was great at the National Portrait Gallery.
Best museums to recommend to tourists is the International Spy and Newseum. I also recommend the "Tour with Tea" that takes you to the top of the national cathedral bell tower at the end, which is the highest point in DC. The herb garden there is great as well.

Excellent taste my friend. That one.
So far I like the portrait gallery. The new African American Museum is pretty cool too. I live in DC at the moment so I plan to cross every Smithsonian off the list soon. My least favorite so far was the Postal museum, if you're not into stamp collecting, it won't be interesting to you.
