New Japan General

As always, feel free to ask about:
>Traveling to Japan
>Living in Japan
>Teaching in Japan
>Joining the Yakuza
>Getting your weeb fantasies crushed

*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Please refer to the old thread while it's still up: >>1190320

Hey 2017 anon, with the anime coming out next year and japan trip. I can't wait for what 2017 has in store.

Really hoping 3500 is enough to get a lot out of japan in 3 weeks(flight and hotel paid for).

They're gonna rebuild it so it can walk for the 2020 Olympics obviously.

You can choose one, and only one, dining experience/restaurant in Tokyo. Which one is it, which is the one that will always be an unremarkable experience?

Going in March, then again next December, then probably again the following March. Still not sure if I want to deal with it being even more crowded than usual for the 2020 olympics plus it's gonna be fucking hot
>>
Just an Akihabara question, I'm a dude who is into dansou chicks but only really because of the short hair. There were a few cuties soliciting their dansou cafes and that got me wondering if guys actually go there or if it's just a fujoshi thing. I'd really love to go and get a cheki or something.

Going to Japan this March with my boyfriend and some friends. We're mostly planning to stay in Tokyo. If any of you have some recommendations for food/nightlife/getting the most out of Tokyo, I'd love to hear them! I'm also wondering if any of you know of good stores in Akihabara that sell figurines that aren't massively overpriced.

I'm so anxious about this trip, I'm really looking forward to it.

Most stores in Akihabara aren't massively overpriced, if you're talking about used figures some of them are massively overpriced because they generally are only released once and that's it.

I'm in Japan early April and wanted to go to one of the major spring festivals like Takayama Spring Festival or the Yayoisai festival in Nikko, but it seems like I'm SOL trying to find a room there at this point. Especially as a single traveler.
Anyone maybe know any nice places close by to those or maybe some other lesser known festivals during that time?
I'm kinda having the same problem trying to find a nice place to stay in Kyoto, but it being a larger city I'm sure I'm going to figure something out there.

Heads up guys. The Yen has fallen a bit further so it's a good time to get your money sorted. I'm about $150 down as I changed my money too early.

Not sure if it helps with flights, but will probably help accommodation and obviously with spending money.

Do they accept gajin credit cards when you buy a ticket for the NEX?

If not is there an international ATM in the Narita airport?

I'd rather not have to get jewed by the airport currency exchange before I find make it to a 7-11
>>
>>1192814
Yes they will take your gaijin credit card, but unless you have one with no foreign transaction fee you're still getting jewed. There's plenty of cards to choose from, and many with no annual fee. Alternatively, get a Charles Schwab checking account. Completely fee-free, no foreign transaction fees on the debit card they give you, and ALL atm fees are refund to you at the end of each month.

My suggestions would be skip the castle, go Toyota museum, eat miso nikomi udon or tebasaki, if you are staying for more than a day do day trips to shirakawa or ise grand shrine. I personally think the Mie/Gifu/ Aichi area is the best in Japan for long time expats, lower cost of living, large Brazilian and American communities because of manufacturing and heavy industries.

Hey Japan General, I'll be going to Japan in 4 weeks and I was wondering what my best options are for having internet access on my phone/devices, I am able to tether from my phone. I was considering a pupuru but I'm curious about what other options I may have, like a travel sim or something. I really only need internet, call minutes and texting aren't necessary. Thanks in advance for any advice you're able to give me.

'sup guys.

I'm leaving for Japan in 3 weeks and wanted to buy a Laptop.
I wanted to get something more powerful, you know suited for videogames.

Prices are too much here, though that maybe I could buy one in Japan, since technology in Japan is a bit cheaper to the close distance to the Thailand slavery sweatshops.

Is it cheaper? Or will the CPU-Yakuza rip me off?

Just got back from a day in Akhibara. So crazy and so much fun. The maid cafe was a disappointment. I went to Jam and they wouldn't let me take photos. They were strange and unprofessional too. I could only communicate with one of the girls working, but for some reason it wasn't her that served me, so it was a bit awkward. At the end of the meal I tried to call one of the three girls working over to get my phone from the wall where it was charging. They all looked at me and we're hesitant to come over before one finally did like an "oh fuck it,, the rest of you are daft/being ridiculous gesture" and came over. No clue why. My only guess is they saw my camera on the floor pointing upwards. Its cap was on and it was only there because I had no room on the table, but maybe they thought I was trying to take up skirts or some shit.

Went to go to another but they were going to charge 500 for photos.

Super Potato was awesome. I played some baseball robot best em up on the top floor. The toy store Yamashiroya was also amazing. Way better than the cultural center, which I could only see someone liking if they're way into figurines.

Also, Mosburger was really cool for delicious Japanese style hamburgers

Now I'm alone in Shibuya trying to figure out what to do tn

They probably get a lot of weeb foreigners trying to act out their fantasies on them and the placement of your camera probably didn't help at all. Did you go alone? How was the food and drinks? Do you have a picture of the menu? Better luck next time I suppose.

Ugh, maybe you're right. I made a point of leaving the camera on the table with its cap on after I noticed their weirdness.

I had the miss stew. It was good, but I don't have anything to compare it to. Had a microbrew brown ale too which was really nice. All in all, wish I'd gone to one of the many other cheaper places with way better menus. I don't know why Jam shows up first on Google maps. As far as I'm aware, their claim to fame is that they'll draw anything you ask using ketchup. Have fun, pervs

Intercourse is the only thing that isn't allowed. However some places like Tobita Shinchi get around that by offering the service of food and drinks in a private room, and saying that what happens between the girl and the guest is private and totally not what the guest is paying 16,000 yen for.
>>

A lot of those sites say no intercourse because they have to. Depends on the site but intercourse is definitely negotiable. You're better off going to review sites and looking at what others say about it

So, I'm hanging in Akasaka for a couple weeks. I've got a question about booze, but it's actually more of a question about the US than anything else.

Here's the info:
I'm 19, traveling alone, and I've stocked up on atrange foreign booze. I'm planning on either throwing it in a checked bag or mailing it to myself. I'd obviously prefer the checked bag since its cheaper, but still. I'm following all of the guidelines of my airline for alcohol (Delta: no more than 3 liters of alcohol between 29% and 70%), but technically someone under 21 can't import alcohol to the US, even in a checked bag.

Here's the question:
Will I be stopped / my booze taken if I have it checked? Will the customs agent see there's booze in my bag when I say I have nothing to declare? If they do, will they crosscheck that with the fact that I'm under 21 and wreck me?

Any info would help!

>tl;dr
>I'm under 21, traveling alone, and want to import booze to the US. How do?
>>
>>1193577
Is it really worth the shit alcohol you enjoy when you're 19? And as a minor your aren't following their guidelines. Here's the answer you're looking for, you'll get caught if you get caught. It depends on how vigilant the person at customs is if they want to get the police involved or simply confiscate it. I'm guessing you'll do it anyway not get caught and think you're a badass for it.
>>
>>1193577
So 19 it hurts
>>
>>1193585

>>
>>1193620
If you don't want to get robbed, just make sure the place doesn't stink of Chinese, Korean or Russian mafia.
The Japanese yakuza generally doesn't do petty things like robbery, especially not of tourists - it's more trouble than it's worth with the police, and also it's shameful to make your money rolling people when you could make it through more effective and less embarrassing means (mainly protection, smuggling and fraud).
The Japanese yakuza isn't likely to rob you because they're already fixed for what they need and don't need more trouble with the police - if you get robbed, all of a sudden the embassy is involved and they're going to have to work like hell to get out scot-free.
The Chinese, the Koreans and the Russians don't have the contacts they need to make money in other ways than robbery, drug dealing, prostitution and just general opportunism - they want all the money they can get to stay in the country and can't afford to let a mark go if they look like they're loaded.
A yakuza member who just casually robs you is going to have something very difficult to explain the next day on his hands and knees, and is probably going to get his teeth knocked in. For a foreign group, it's business as usual because the Japanese yakuza is sitting on the prettier business.

Going to be taking the shinkansen from Narita to Osaka on the 31st of December.

I hear it can get pretty busy with everyone travelling to see family around that time. Anyone have an idea of how ugly it might be for me? Should I have to worry about not being able to get a seat/ticket on the shinkansen?

Should I carry less luggage? This also goes into another question which is; I was originally planning on taking two roller luggage cases (one with some clothes, one empty for purchases). How difficult would it be with two vs having just one? Is it hard to find space for your luggage?
>>
>>1193644
>Should I have to worry about not being able to get a seat/ticket on the shinkansen?
Yes.

>Is it hard to find space for your luggage?
Yes.

If you can find another way to transport your luggage, do so. Get your tickets (reserved) as soon as possible. They might already be sold out.
>>
>>1193644
Your country's "rush hour" is the Tokyo area's day off.
Yes to both of your questions, and how. Order a ticket right now, or you're going to be standing in the boundary between cars with your face pushed up the wall, and you're going to be in everyone's way if you have even a single bag.
I have no fucking idea why you thought it would be a bright idea to lug two fucking roller cases through the most congested urban agglomeration in the world in the one busiest season.
You'll be in for a hell of a trip if that's the amount of research you do.

I've purchased a JR Pass already, but I'm not in Japan yet so I can't really reserve anything online except JR East lines it looks like (which doesn't have anything going to Shin-Osaka Station in it).

I'm fine with just taking one case lightly packed with clothing, but I'm now I'm really more worried about just being able to get to Shin-Osaka station. Do you guys think it would make any difference to leave on the 30th instead? (can't leave any earlier because that's the day I fly into Narita)

Also, is it really that bad that I might not be able to get out of Shinagawa Station to Shin-Osaka at all on the 31st? I'm fine with being in crowded places; more worried that I wouldn't have a way to get to Shin-Osaka Station.

How much would a session at a soapland normally cost?

And what can you do at a soapland? Does it depend on the place?
>>
>>1193697
20,000 yen at minimum and it goes up to 50,000 and 100,000 yen for the top tier ones (you wont be able to get into them because you're a gaijin and there's no difference for a visitor for the top tier ones and the lower ones anyways)

Also you can do everything except hurt the girl and you need to follow instructions which is why some japanese is needed. Depending on the time to pay you can either go for 60 mins or longer and there's mat play where they bathe you and the bed portion. You cant have both if you choose the cheapest one due to no time. You also need to find a gaijin friendly one.

http://www.yoshiwara-otome.com/top.html

Hjnere's one staffed by 18 year old girls friendly towards gaijin. There's others that might fit your taste but I suggest you find out yourself.

There is but it involves going into yoshiwara, getting a guy say psst hey kid you wanna have sex?

Then they show you to a woman that is most of the time pretty old for 10,000 yen. Sometimes you get lucky and get a hot one though but that involves finding the info from japanese forums that specializes in this which I doubt you'll be able to find.

Most women in the world are fuckable if they aren't fat, grow up without being totally poor, and without having to do hard labor.

Japan has a huge percentage of women that fit this criteria. But there are still fatties and plenty of girls with just straight up ugly faces just like the rest of the world. The teeth thing is getting under control in Japan but there are tons of girls with fucked up grills as well.

I'm really not looking forward to going back. The two months I've been here so far have been the best two months of the past 5 years of my life.

Can i go to japan with only a one way ticket? or i need to have a ticket to fly outside tokyo for inmigration purposes?
>>
>>1194151
You can go to most any country with a one way ticket. Not everywhere is going to check or work with the government to cross check that shit. Hell you could buy a RT ticket and just miss your flight.

Why you would want a 1 way ticket and not thinking you aren't going to be caught fairly quick is another thing.
>>
>>1194167
Did you try going to Japan with a one way ticket? If don't just don't reply.
>>1194151
The airline is probably going to ask why you don't have a return ticket, and if you can't prove you have a visa (or at least some solid proof you're going to get one once in Japan) they'll make you buy a return ticket.

Hey guys I've been looking for places to stay 2 weeks before going around the country by train, and was thinking to spend a week in Tokyo and a week in Kyoto. Is this a good enough plan? Is a week enough to see everything there is to see in Tokyo? Is Kyoto big enough to stay there for a week? If not, ¿what other city could be nice to stay for a long time that wasn't too far from other interesting places?

Do you (dis)like atom bombs and want to know all about how terrible they are? Do you want an urban environment and would you like to eat good Okonomiyaki? Then Hiroshima.

If you're culturally inclined, it's kind of a toss up between Miyajima and Nara.
Miyajima has an awesome temple (comfy) and shrine (photogenic), some good nature views, and hiking up Mt. Misen is arduous but rewarding (that view). It has tame deer as well, and supposedly they've got monkeys, too.
Nara has plenty of temples and shrines, and they're absolutely impressive - especially the size of them! They're seriously huge, bigger than everything else I've seen in Japan. Honestly, the deer are just a gimmick - go there if you want to see more historical religious buildings.

Personally, I don't think you need to see Hiroshima, but both Miyajima and Nara are a good choice. I think I'd prefer going to Nara because you won't see that kind of huge architecture anywhere else.

oi fags visiting Kyoto - Osaka - Nara

one of the most amazing cultural treasures of Japan are its museums. Not just nip stuff but also the loot from China and Korea and may be seen in the many not so well advertised little museums off the beaten path.

One valuable source of information on these museums in Kansai is the Gruttopass - a JPY1000 booklet containing a large number of discount tickets and free passes for museums large and small. It's valid for 90 days and in a year in Kyoto I went through four booklets - entry to the Kyoto National Museum is JPY540 so the free pass to that one gives some idea of the value of the booklet to museum lovers.

May be purchased at participating museum ticket offices and further info

1 week for Kyoto is too much. Tokyo can be done in a week. If you have two weeks, I would recommend something like:
>1 week of Tokyo with a side trip of your choice (Nikko, Kamakura, Yokohama etc.)
>3 days of Kyoto
>1 day trip to Nara
>1 day trip to Osaka

Leaves you with two days, I would recommend Hakone for that
>>
>>1194264
Alright, thanks for the advice. Only thing is I'm looking for a week stay after Tokyo too, since Airbnb usually gives some kind of discount if you stay a whole week. Will look at it regardless though.
>>
>>1193989
Nara is full of ancient temples. What's to see at Hiroshima other than the nuclear site?
>>
>>1194293
Miyajima, Yamato/JMSDF Museum.

Go to Kabukicho and see the Cyberpunk Robot Show. I want to know if it's any good.
>>1193974
You can get some Hello Kitty bullshit from Kiddyland in Harajuku. Or you can get her a DIY gummy candy kit, they're like $3. There's lots but I know 'tanoshi o sushiya-san' is a good one. Or you can go to Oriental Bazaar in Harajuku and get her a coin purse, a tote bag, a bansai tree kit, lots of cheep gift stuff there.
>>1193964
I think there's an onsen at Mt Takao, and there's an onsen theme park at Odaiba.
>>1193901
I recommend doing it before you depart. I had no trouble exchanging money at the airport, many workers there can speak English, but you could get stuck in line, and I think the commission they take is a little higher.
>>
I'm going to be doing a homestay in a few weeks. My host family has three kids, a four-year-old girl, an eighty-year-old boy, and a nine-year-old boy. Any advice for omiyage? I've heard regional specialties are best but I live out in bum fuck nowhere. Deer hunting is popular here, so I thought of buying a deer stuffed animal for the girl, but any other ideas?
>>
>>1194373
Dick for the girl

Thank you so much for this info. I'm going to Kansai mainly for the museums, temples, and art.

The general consensus here is to stay in either Kyoto or Osaka, and take a train to one for day trips. Does this make sense with air bnb? Or should I book a few nights in Osaka and a few in Kyoto?
>>
>>1194373
Snacks, toys, coloring books, etc. The deer stuffed animal sounds cute.
>>
Is it pronounced sumimasen, or sumi-sen?

Because I tend to hear it said the latter way. Do I look autistic when I'm saying sumimasen?
>>
Should I stay a day more before I leave Japan just to see Tokyo or leave it for another trip? Worth it for a day?

>>1194416
sumimasen

Sumimasen or suimasen.

I've got my visa, flight and a 2 month airbnb booked for Tokyo.
I was wondering if there's such thing as cash in hand work in Japan and will they allow anon jap speaking gaijin work ?
Just asking because i'd like to feed myself.

No company will hire you on a tourist visa. If you have a working holiday visa, you'll need a uni degree and come from an English speaking country to get a job teaching English.

Otherwise, you'll be hard pressed to find a job. You'll need fluency in Japanese and then finding one of the few people who will actually hire you in whatever field you're looking for will be even harder. You may be able to get manual labor work since I know that's what a lot of Brazilians/Africans do for work, but I wouldn't have the first idea how to get into that kind of stuff.

Stay entirely in Kyoto and I'd suggest somewhere around Sanjo-Higashiyama. Lots to see in walking distance and very convenient subway linking to Nara and Osaka trains. There are no temples in Osaka, unlike Nara but both are worthwhile for one long one day.

Nara - must see National Museum (don't miss the Chinese bronzes and Buddhist sculpture if open. There's also the Nara Prefectural Museum of Art and definitely don't miss the temple museums for Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji temples.

Osaka: the don't miss museum is the Museum of Oriental Ceramics - absolutely world class treasures of Japan, Korea and China. Also at the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts is a gallery of very fine Wei dynasty (China) 6thC Buddhist sculpture plus changing exhibition galleries and there's also the Osaka National Museum of Art which tends towards mostly modern/contemporary.

Depends on your personal preferences and time constraints. There's also archaeology museums which are more history and social development rather than art.

A really valuable resource is the rack of advertising flyers for exhibitions in other museums. They'll all be in Japanese language but will have pictures and maps of how to get there. I'd collect those of most interest to me and take to either the city information centre or my favorite bistro restaurant where my waitress friend would translate for me.

Beware: nearly all museums closed Mondays (or rarely on another day of the week) so check this particularly if travelling to see something. Temples open seven days

All the rest is in Kyoto. Ask any questions and I'll help with whatever I can

>uni degree

Not him but, does it need to be a uni degree in teaching, or can it just be English language related?

So I rented a van to travel around Japan for the next month. After doing a whole bunch of trips to Japan, traveling by car seems like a nice way to get to some corners not served by public transportation.

Guys, I'm going to Shikoku but I'm getting confused.
Google lists a shuttle bus to Sakaide from the Takamatsu airport as a viable route, but the website only lists a shuttle bus to Takamatsu station and Kotohira, and I'm not sure who to believe.
Ideally, if there's a direct route to Sakaide, that would be the best option for me.

A lot. The Japanese see them all cool hip hop artist so they hire them for touts or to do something hip hop related for their company. They haven't had them long enough to realized how dangerous they are
>>
>>1194479
What is "a lot"?

I can deal with like 50 of them in entire Tokyo. But if I see more than 4 in the same street I'm quitting this trip. I ain't paying an entire fucking salary in flight and hotel cost just to see niggers speaking japanese.

So that little niggy can stay free and cook crack all day long without the evil white police pigs ruining his buisness plan and putting him into the rascist county jail where all his friends and family are.

Hey /trv/, I'm going to gundam front tokyo in an hour, and stopping by Akiba after that. Are there any other otaku attractions to note of? Any monuments, museums or shops are what I'm looking for. I heard there's an Evangelion store at ikebukuro, but are there any others? Also, for a /M/ fanboy, any other cool attractions?

I'm also going to Nezu and Nippori tonight too. I heard it's super cool, very old-fashioned.
