Me and my buddy are planning a last minute trip to Iceland. Leaving December 16th and returning the 21st. We are both avid backpackers and would love to see the wilderness some way. The weather right now looks to be about 40F so no snow. We also really want to see the northern lights. Has anyone done a trip like this? Any recommendations or advice?
What is accessible right now?

Pic related is the current plan.
Me and my buddy booked the trip, arriving 5AM on Friday and leaving 330PM on Wednesday. Here is a preliminary trip plan, let me know if there is anything glaringly wrong.

Day 1: 5AM - Pick up car and drive north route displayed in map, stay at airbnb up north.
Day 2: Drive down south and see Golden Circle, and other points on map in the circle shape route. Stay in Reykjavik.
Day 3 + 4: Drive the southern coastal route to the black sands, glaciers, and up to the national park. Thinking about booking an ice cave tour.
Day 5: ??? undecided
I'm hung up on the car rental situation. Will a small economy car be good enough to get where we want to go? I can drive a manual and I am a good drive (I'm sure everyone says this).

Isn't visiting the Golden Circle illegal during winter months?

No, but depending on the weather it may be difficult.
