*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Please refer to the old thread while it's still up: >>1174950

How might one call the US from Japan (without a smartphone)? I've heard about international payphones in Japan--but how common are these?
>>
>>1177759
Leaving from North Eastern U.S. in Pennsylvania. I am holding a somewhat flexible flight schedule due to these questions. I was looking to go around mid June (to only experience the beginning of the heatt) or early July (to climb Mt. Fuji)

Day 1-4 tokyo
5-6 kyoto
7-8 osaka
9-10 nagoya
11 yokohama
12-14 tokyo

Is this itinerary doable (time related)? How much would this cost me approximately? And last but not least: after typing in my itinerary in hyperdia i got a total cost of 32k yen for my train costs, a jr pass for 14 days costs approx 50k yen, i imagone within tokyo i will also take buses and trains, but i obviously couldnt count them in since i dont know which ones i will take yet, so my question to you: is it worth paying for?
>>
>>1177820
skip Nagoya, unless there's something you absolutely want to see there. I would get the 1 week pass, that should be enough (4-11th Yokohama is close to Tokyo so you don't need the pass for that)

As for costs, it depends on how you spend your money (Hostels vs. Hotels, Restaurants vs. Conbini etc.). Check http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2028.html to get some better ideas about costs
>>
>>1177830
What would yo do instead of nagoya, more time in kyoto/osaka?
>>
>>1177851
I liked Hakone. You should also do Nara as a day trip from Kyoto/Osaka to see the deer.

Also you don't actually need to stay in Yokohama, it can easily be done as a half day/day trip from Tokyo
>>
Is the JR pass still recommended if i'm going to stay 80% of my trip in Tokyo?
>>
What's a good way of finding people to hang out with? I already use some language exchange apps
>>
>>1177857
It's mostly worth it if you do a lot of long distance travel, and even then you should do a price check.
A lot of local trains and subway lines are actually private and not covered by the JR pass (Tokyo does have a decent amount of JR subways, though).

I'm in an AirBnb and it's getting pretty cold and I don't understand how to make the aircon warm instead of cold.

I attached a picture of it. I know the big rectangular button in the middle is power, the two arrows above are temperature. Then there's timer in the lower right corner, different power settings on the left. But how do I get it to heat? Help would really be appreciated.
>>
>>1178154
Push the 運転切替 button until the arrow on the screen is pointing to 暖房 (at the bottom left), then adjust the temperature with the arrow buttons.
>>
>>1178154
I'm pretty sure the bottom right words by the small screen are for hot air, so you will want to find the button that will toggle it. I think it's the top right button - keep pressing it until the setting is toggled.

Or ask your irbnb host for help.
>>
Thank you. I just did that, but there's almost no air coming out and I somehow can't choose the high power mode at the same time as the heating mode.
>>
>>1178165
The 風量切替 ought to adjust the amount of air that comes out.
>>
I now put the arrow on the left to the bottom and the one on the right too and it seems to work. Thank you guys again.
>>
>>1178167
Stay warm, friend.
>>
Thanks. It's nice to get this kind of help on 4chan, but this board is different from many others I guess.

I never thought it would be this cold. I'm doing a working holiday stay and I was in Kyoto the last six weeks and most of the time, I went out with a T-Shirt and the apartment was really warm without any heating. Now I'm further South in Fukuoka and somehow it's much colder.
>>
>>1178173
It suddenly got cold when it hit November. No one was really prepared for it! I'm a bit further south than you, and it was 3℃ when I left for work on Tuesday. The weather forecast is calling for similar weather for the foreseeable future, so hang in there.

Heading to Tokyo in three weeks just for a week

Staying in Koenji so I'm gonna check out the local bars there since I'm big into craft beer and microbreweries, if anyone knows of any cool places to drink let me know. Also any brewery tours would also be cool but I don't think there are any in tokyo.

I'm also doing a day trip to Kamakura, as I've been to Japan before and have seen lots in Tokyo already I wasn't going to spend half a day going to Odaiba and other half day trips so I have plenty of room open to leave the city.

I don't really want to spend too much time in transit or too much money on trains because as we all know Shinkansen get expensive and I'm not buying a JR pass so does anyone know any other good day trips out of Tokyo? I'm looking for more nature and temples instead of other cities, I don't really want to go hiking or something though.

Thanks guys, hope I can help answer some other questions too

I've heard you have to activate your JR Pass at a train station on the day you want to activate it, but when buying it it's asking me "Start to use pass from:"
Am I able to change this at a later date if it ends up different from my plan when I arrive? Or am I locked in to using the pass at that date and still have to go to the station to activate it for real

Kinpira vegetables, pickles, or onigiri, maybe? A lot of typical Japanese dishes aren't really made to last for a day in a backpack.

Hakodate is a few hours from Sapporo so, yeah, it's a little different.

>odd to adjust to up there compared to the rest of Japan?

People generally move really slowly, are fairly provincial, and dress poorly. I'd say about 70% of the population is addicted to pachinko, smart phones, or both. Hakodate is an OK city, but it's really spread out. The Japanese food is good, the western food is pretty much not (there's a famous local hamburger chain there called Lucky Pierrot, which you will 100% for sure be taken to, so you can judge for yourself). The morning market is touristy but worth it, altough the food is by no means cheap. Hakodate's specialty is squid. Nice side trips from Hakodate are Esan and Matsumae; it's best to do these by car, but public transportation (bus) is possible but time-consuming. That's all I can think of to tell you, so if you have any other questions go ahead and ask.
>>
>>1178489
You should study
>Please
>Thank you.
>Excuse me.
>I'm sorry.
>I speak English. I speak a little Japanese.
>How to say you have a reservation.
>Your name
>where you're from
>directions
>how much is it?
>how to order food

Those are some pretty solid basics and will make your trip better.

I'm in an AirBnb and the landlord speaks almost no English and there are no instructions in the apartment. As my Japanese is also pretty bad, could you help me with the washing machine in the pic? From what I know and read, I'll just press the rectangular gray switch with the red brink on the right to switch the machine on and then the right red button that says "sutato". It should take about 30 minutes and switch off by itself. Is that right or should I do it differently?

DO NOT PUT YOUR CLOTHES IN THERE

That is not a washing machine, that is a Japanese silverizer. They use it to coat their katanas with a thin layer of ultra-dense silver. That's how they can slice through anything. If you put your clothes in there, they will soak up the silver like a sponge, costing you a fortune and also making them very uncomfortable (but durable).

Conbini, Yoshinoya, Sukiya, Coco Ichibanya.

There are plenty of places in Tokyo you can get a nice bowl of ramen for < 740yen,

heck even some mcdonalds meals are only 500 yen but you're in japan, eat japanese food

>>1178758
Its much easier to just get a data sim card and use that with your current smartphone, phones can be hard to get.
>>
>>1178772
>conbini
>cheap

Why does this meme persist? Convenience store food isn't that cheap. At 7-11 the side ceasar salad is literally like 350 yen, the Cobb salad, like 500, six pieces of takoyaki like 400. I mean, you can get just a rice or noodle based entree for like 500 yen, so if you only eat that it's not that expensive, but I mean if you want to get a meal with a main thing, a drink and side or something you will pay between 800-1000 yen at a convenience store.

Yoshinoya is cheap, as is Matsuya and the Matsuya owned katsu restaurant (that place is one of the best deal on food in Japan anywhere hands down). Chain ramen restaurants are pretty cheap.

Coco Ichi isn't cheap. The cheese Rosukatsu curry is like 1,000 yen. That's pricey. And you pay out the ass for extra levels of heat. Level 5 is like 150 yen more than level 4.
>>
>>1178753
Maybe find a large supermarket in the basement of a shopping building and buy your dinners there before they close. Premade meals get price reductions before they close. So if you wait you can get cheaper food than the conbini, but if you wait too long you won't have many options.

If you have a mini fridge you can always put some water bottles in it or store a cup noodle on top. Many hotels will have a kettle to heat hot water. Please eat some salads too so you won't get sick from malnutrition.

Saizeriya. It's a basic cheap restaurant with a green, white, and red logo. They serve pastas, pizza, and sausages. You can order the drink bar and get a few cups of soda at the dispensary. Go in, let them seat you in the smoking or non-smoking section, pick what you want from the menu, click the green button which chimes on your table, then order when the employee hears your chime. Pay at the register on your way out. I order two meals and the drink bar and I never pay over 800 yen.

I remember a small Izakaya in Omoide Yokocho (Piss alley near Shinjuku station) that had 500 Yen Ramen. Nothing special, run by a mom & pop, but not a scam like other izakayas in that place. It's the first one to the right if you go up the from the bottom of the street

Does that one have instructions?

When I was in Japan last time my Airbnb had a washer/dryer combo machine and the dryer didn't work so be careful, if you need to travel soon and can't afford to wait for things to air dry consider using a laundromat
>>
>>1178840

I have enough time and never use a dryer. I just went to a 7/11, got a random liquid detergent and asked them if that was a "normal" one I could use with any washing machine. They said yes, so I got and will try it tomorrow.
>>
>>1178832
Ariel is a Japanese detergent brand so I think you're safe. If you go to the conbini you can grab a Tide packet if you need more. >>1178840
A washer/dryer combo sounds awesome, most people only have washers, then line dry on their patio or in their ofuro with the fan turned on.
>>
>>1178774
Pretty sure you can get a bento box at around 350 or onigiri at around 120 in some combining especially during late night although that is not the cheapest.

Who would get side dish when cheap is of concern

And some supermarkets seems to have cheaper bento than conbini

Where the fuck does one buy a comb in Japan?
Seriously, I´ve managed to buy all the toiletries I´ve forgotten, but the fucking comb is impossible to get. 100 yen stores, convenience stores, cosmetics and drug stores, best I´ve found is a tiny little piece of shit on some "My Little Baby Princess" type of display rack.

Hey, /trv/

What are some of the nicer smaller temples to see in Kyoto? Will be there in about 10 days (hopefully catching the foliage) and I don't want to be traipsing around all the larger temples.

Also, will be heading to Tokyo afterwards. I only need a single ticket, will probably take shinkansen, but is it okay to rock up at the station and buy the ticket for later on the day I arrive?

DO NOT PUT THIS IN THE SILVERIZER

You see that big-ass picture of a radioactive atom on the jug? Look at those electron orbits! If you put that in the silverizer the Ag+ ions are going to react and you're going to be in for a world of hurt. I hope you're in Hiroshima or Nagasaki so history is at least easy to remember for future generations, if there are any.
>>
>>1177820
Itinerary is doable, but I would take off one day from Nagoya and either do Nara or Kobe instead. I would also set up a home base in either Kyoto or Osaka and just do day trips to the surrounding cities. Same when traveling to Yokohama. Stay in Tokyo and just do a day trip to Yokohama as it's only a 30-40min train ride.

For the JR pass, I would just get a 7 day pass for your trip between Tokyo to Kyoto and back. You should just about break even here. For the rest of your trips, just get a prepaid Suica card. It'll be cheaper than buying a 14day JR pass desu.

Your gf might struggle finding real Kobe beef in Osaka, but it's not impossible. Her best bet is Kuromon market. Though she can easily acquire Wagyu beef (well marbled Japanese beef). The last time I was in Japan was a couple of yrs ago. But IIRC it was about $50-60/lb USD for Sirloin.

In Tokyo there's Akihabara, Ikebukuro, and Nakano Broadway. In Osaka there's Den Den Town.
>>
Is Sendai worth a day trip from Tokyo?
>>
>>1179001
Matsushima Bay is one of Japan's great views, but personally I'm using Sendai as a base for day trips to Aizu and Mt. Bandai, along with Hiraizumi in addition to the local sites. Also visiting the Nikka Whiskey Distillery in Sendai.
>>
>>1178904
Akihabara is going to be the best place for anime merchandise in terms of volume and variety and scope. Nakano Broadway is very figure-centric and a lot of it is vintage and western thrown in there too--like Star Wars, etc. Ikebukuro is geared more girls. Lots of "bishounen" merchandise, male characters. There's basically just the Animate store and some game centers.

Akihabara is certainly your best bet, it's not really close.
>>
>>1177943
what kind of anime merch? be more specific

perhaps mandarake would be your best bet
>>
>>1178875
Yeah, you're right, that's true.

When that happens and they tell you the price and you look a little confused 9/10 times they will put it in a calculator and show you. Almost every store I went to had a calculator and would put in the price if I asked or when I paid, as well as show me the change I should expect back on the calculator.

But I should add:

I liked it quite a lot, Nokonoshima Island, the Yatai, Ohori Park, Fukuoka Tower and the Bay etc. I stayed there for 4 days and always felt like there's stuff to do

Also livability of a city does not necessarily equate to how many things there are to do. I live in Vienna which is always ranked #1 or 2 in livability, but I think tourists can get quite bored after 2-3 days if they aren't into classical music and museums
>>

True, but I also think the city is not particularily beautiful, cultured or anything else. Maybe I just need to give it more time.

If you want to actually shop at any of those places, prepare yourself by doing your homework on market prices.
Especially in Akiba, there's lots of stores with rippoff pricing (this goes twice for electronics).
You'll reach stimulus satiation in no time so comparing shops and going back is pretty much impossible; you want to know if a store is expensive or cheap right away.

Unless you're looking for something rare (but then you'd know the going price anyway), it might be safer/cheaper to just look and then buy online.

Hey /trv/, I'm planning my first trip to Japan and wanted to see if you could share some of your knowledge on these things:

>Nice towns around Tokyo and in Shikoku for the sake of enjoying the countyside

>Cheap ways of going to Hokkaido from Tokyo

My plan is to buy the 5-day Japan bus passes for traveling overnight and saving on hotels. Also, the trip to Hokkaido is optional since even going from Hachinohe to Hakodate is gonna cost around ¥6,300. Is there anything worth seeing there?
>>
>>1179070
22 days to go. Got about 70 pages of planning and I'm losing sleep with anxiety. I still have lists of lists of things to do and I still feel unprepared.

I might be a bit neurotic.
>>
I might have to make a thread about this to ask the greater /trv/ but figured I would start here.

After doing some serious budget calculations, and finally getting ahold of one of my super gourmet friends, I have determined I don't need to spend the cash on a 3 star michelin sushi meal and the related costs of securing a reservation.

This frees up my budget to knock something else off my bucket list: wreck diving at Truk Lagoon.

Has anyone here ever done that? Most all the flights I can find seem to have some nasty layovers (NRT to Guam to Truk) is there a better route to take?

what part of shikoku did you have in mind? i've been a few times. people are really nice and its about as inaka as you can get honestly.
>>
>>1179330
s...seventy pages of planning? how long are you going for? plans are nice and all, but really should only be used as a guide. you never know what could happen. you could miss a bus or train or you might end up liking one place so much you want to spend more time there, and end up losing time for something you originally planned. loosen up bro
>>
>>1179370
Thanks! I'm planning to go to Shikoku by bus since the 5-day pass covers that route. I checked Kayak and it said the trip to Sapporo could cost $100, thank you for the air fare info, maybe I'll go after all.

In Shikoku I was thinking of going to Takamatsu and Kochi, but the buss pass only covers a trip from Osaka to Imabari (which doesn't look bad either) and Matsuyama. What would you suggest? What nearby places are worth going to? Don't really have that much planned yet as you can see.

How easy is it to get tobacco underage? Probably going to Japan soon and Ive heard from teh interwebs you can buy it from a store without anyone asking for id, but wanted to known of accurate that is
>>
>>1179404
By underage I mean in Japan I'm 19 and am merican
>>
>>1179385
I liked Takamatsu. Quite calm and it seemed everyone was working very hard to make the city attractive. Nice change of pace after Tokyo and other big cities.
Things to check out are the villa garden near the castle, Ritsurin Garden, the Yashima area and the shopping arcade to have some Udon (just watch out for cyclists). If it's warm enough, you can go take a ferry to one of the islands to go bathing.
A side trip to Kotohira to visit Konpira-san is a good idea, too - unless you don't want to climb up ~1370 steps.

>>1179373
Honestly? Two days of travelling and eight days in Tokyo. Those 70 pages include travelling to the airport, how to navigate the airport and connecting flights, then roughly what we'd like to do for each day accompanied by train schedules and screenshots of Google Maps walking routes.

We're not well travelled at all and we don't know the language very well, thought I'd overprepare just incase but I still feel underprepared. I still get stressed thinking about ordering food in Japanese.

I acknowledge this is quite a weebish question, thought I'd ask anyway.

I live somewhere that didn't really have a big arcade scene to begin with, so I'm very excited about visiting my first arcade in Japan. I've done some research to make sure I'm not stepping on anyone's toes there (getting up after the credit ends if someone's waiting, asking the staff before taking photos etc.), but it didn't say much about etiquette with other people. For example, if I'm playing a fighting game with someone on a head-to-head cabinet, is it okay to poke my head through the side and give them a little smile or wave? I can't really help myself from being polite when I play games with people, I shake hands a lot.

I would, only stayed in Hostels in Japan and always had a blast
>Any hostel recommendations?
depends on where you go? I liked the Khaosan chain. If you go to Hakone, Hakone Tent was probably my favorite on mainland Japan. Best hostel I ever stayed in was on Ishigaki though (Shiraho Friend's house). Owner was the nicest person I met during my time in Japan, had guests out to drink every night, offered night tours in his truck and could generally offer better insight into the island than all travel guides combined. The hostel itself isn't fancy or anything, but it does have a rooftop from where you can enjoy a night sky with millions of stars (saw 5 or 6 shooting stars up there within an hour or so).

If you visit the red light districts in big japanese cities you really do have to be careful around the nigerians. They are on every street corner trying to con you or lure you into clubs or to meet girls.

They spike your drinks so you are balckout drunk after only 2-3 drinks and then empty your wallet.

www.tokyoreporter.com/2014/01/29/nigerian-mafia-running-wild-in-kabukicho/amp/&ved=0ahUKEwiv0tG6zpfQAhUJ2LwKHSiiDAQQFggfMAI&usg=AFQjCNGUhpdbUibVn8MwCeWXTtH1HW_O2g

Others bring you to meet a girl for a massage, collect the money and say "the girl will be here soon" but they never show up.

Outside of the red light districts you see very few blacks unless you go to parts of the country where american military hang out while off duty. You check the news and it is always a few black sailors raping girls.

Long story short: blacks are very rare in japan, and it is ok to avoid them here. They are 5000% more likely to be criminals. This is especially true for nigerians.
>>
>>1179663
he's travelling with his wife though, so it's not likely to get scammed at that kind of places

Yea if you are going to normal tourist sites you can go days without seeing a single black person. Tokyo station is a massive hub of activity and I never saw a single black.

There are a few muslim tourists but they tend to be wealthy and you meet them in the really high end malls that sell $6000 purses. They are not like the muslim street trash you see everywhere un europe.

The japanese girls i see are still wearing short skirts and no gloves. They seem fine. Lots of white tourists in tshirts too.
>>
>>1179688
>The people look like they are near death.

A huge percentage of Japanese women (but increasingly, a lot of men) are completely incapable of handling even mildly cold temperatures. It's really strange. I teach at a university here; last week I went into the classroom (30 girls, no guys) and the thermostat had been turned up to 29C (it was around 12C or so outside). The room was like a furnace. Despite this, 17 of the girls (yes, I counted) were wearing blankets wrapped around their shoulders and/or legs. Something is either physically or mentally wrong with them.

>>1179698
>Is Japan really "globalized?"

On the surface, yes. Underneath, no -- they're very inwardly focused. I know /pol/ considers this a good thing, but in reality it's been negative for the Japanese people and especially for their economy.
>>
I find i am constantly looking up when i enter a building so i can spot the heaters and avoid those areas if at all possible.

At restaurants i sit near the entrance so a cool breeze hits you each time someone enters. At home i set my thermostat to 19c but here "room temperature" seems to be 25 or higher.

The only thing wrong with their economy is them not having enough babies.

>>1179682
Just because a nation is globalised doesn't mean there should be any expectation that there OUGHT to be significant populations of minorities.

Despite what the mainstream media would have you believe, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a homogeneous nation for the good of its people first and foremost.

We need only to look at countries like Germany, Sweden, France and Belgium who greeted """"refugees"""" with open arms.
>>
>>1179709
>The only thing wrong with their economy is them not having enough babies.

You simply have no idea what you're talking about.

>Japan's productivity has been the lowest in the G-7 for 30 years.
>Output per hour in Japan was $41.30 in 2014, compared with $65.20 in France and $64.40 in Germany.

Mind you, the situation is in fact even worse as hours worked are drastically under-reported in Japan due to their toxic work culture.

>Japan’s labor market has the largest skills mismatch in the Asia Pacific region, according to a new report by Hays recruitment agency.
>In terms of Nobel laureates by country as a percentage of population, Japan comes in at number 39, behind Belarus, Costa Rica, and Romania.

I could cite lots and lots more, although really it's pointless. /pol/ is as bad as weebs when it comes to Japan -- it has such a hard-on for Japanese mono-culturalism it cannot admit there's anything wrong with the country.

Can we stop memeing this fucking meme. Guaranteed every Japan thread it is brought up just f3 "spiked drinks" and "Nigerians" and there it will be. I realize this is 4chan so you jolly idiots get off spamming the same old couple news stories and incidents because it makes "TEH NIGGERS XD" look bad.

I'm not even saying Nigerians in Japan's mizu shobai districts don't run clip joints or anything. They do. And they're bad people. Japanese do as well. And they're bad people too. I'm just saying, *it's really not a big deal.* It's Kabukicho. It's a red light district. So what, you guys are indignant that the scummy Africans are being scummy in.... wait for it-- *Tokyo's scummy red light district?* LOL. It's not as if the big bad African guys are ruining some family friendly place with scummy business practices. For every 1 Nigerian tout there are probably 20 Japanese touts doing exactly the same shit.

So to be anti-Nigerian guys specifically is just off base. You can be "anti-Kabukicho".

>You check the news and it is always a few black sailors raping girls
>always
It's literally not. Stop spewing utter horse shit. There was the bad gang rape incident in Okinawa like 20 years ago. Besides that, please show me all this news *always* coming out about black sailors raping. Show me 3-4 black sailor rape stories from 2016, at least. Shouldn't be hard right?

Also, the Tokyo Reporter, which you've cited, is a sensationalist, tabloid. They let a fucking escort service advertise on their website.

>How can you make people happy though?

LOL, if I knew I wouldn't be shitposting on 4chins. On the whole Japan isn't especially unhappy -- they ranked 53rd (out of 157 countries) on the 2015 World Happiness Index. Things however are getting worse; from 2005/2007 to 2013/2015 Japan ranked 107 (of 126 countries) in net change to happiness, with an approximately 8% decline. I'd guess Japan will continue to slump, as overall too many things aren't going well and people here are beginning to realize it. (I'd also bet good money that the >65 years old population is the happiest as they have most of the money; as this group begins to die off the dissatisfaction of younger people will become more pronounced.) At the least, the educational and working systems have to change; right now they're intensely concentrated on making people into obedient drones.

Should I make an itinerary? I've never traveled before and will be spending a month in Tokyo. Also is ¥250,000 for a whole month (including airfare and accommodation) too much for someone who just wants to explore the city? I really want to see the temples and festivals.
>>
>>1179737
>likewise for china, korea, and taiwan

Taiwan is significantly happier than Japan; Korea marginally less happy; and China significantly unhappier. Singapore is the happiest country in Asia, by a wide margin. I doubt it has anything to do with the Brits, but I'm sure someone with better knowledge of the place can explain why (I've only been there 4 or 5 times so I'm hardly an expert). FWIW, over the period I cited above China, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore have all gotten happier.
>>
>>1179740

A month in Tokyo? Why? It's an interesting place, sure, but if you've never traveled before it seems really counter-intuitive to stay in one place for so long. Y250K (depending on what airfare costs you) may be a bit tight, especially if you're planning to spend anything significant on entertainment and/or shopping. As far as temples go, after you've seen 6 or 7 they all start to run together, unless you're well-versed on the nuances of their architecture and history. Otherwise they're a lot of large, dark wooden buildings that look remarkably similar to each other. Lastly, if you confine yourself to one place for a month you'll be able to see one or two festivals, tops, as these aren't everyday occurrences.
>>
>>1179729
Good comeback.

The Nigerians in Kabukicho and Roppongi aren't doing anything different than what the Japanese guys in the same kind of "business" do in those places. So why be so focused on the Nigerians specifically?

It's all shitty, but there's no real reason to dislike the Nigerians more than the Japanese guys who do it. Right?

at the same time, for someone to make this point then deny that labor allocation in Europe or America is healthy or healthier... that's a pretty fucking stupid statement.

a large proportion of Japan's labor allocation issues has to do with their financial structure. arguably America has a healthier financial structure. that argument is reasonable, but still not contestable.

I just found the tiniest little grocery shop on the street that I'm staying in that's tax free. Don't you need to spend over 5000 yen to get a tax discount? I can't imagine spending 5000 yen on instant ramen and KitKats.

Im not sure how exactly Singapore is considered happy. It practises academic elitism and most end up with relatively highpaying jobs.I suppose that could be a reason why people are happy here. But then again I wouldnt know

Unless you want to buy something specific that will probably run out, I'd suggest you not to go early. Around 10/11 am you can enter quickly.

Also, the catalog is heavy so have that in mind if you want to buy it.

I realized that I meant to say EXcluding accommodation and airfare. I've already paid for those and am willing to spend ¥250000 for 30 days. The only reason I want to stay in Tokyo for the month is because it's a really big city, but I really think that I want to explore the whole Kanto region.

My biggest concern is if ¥250000 can last me 30 days for just transportation and food. I'm not planning on eating sushi dinners every night and where I will be staying has a kitchen and will be serving Japanese style breakfast daily. I was thinking a daily budget of ¥8000 (¥2000 for lunch and dinner a day then ¥3000 on daily activities plus another ¥3000 on transportation). Is that economically feasible or should I stop being a cheapskate and increase my budget. I don't mind fast food meals or cooking a couple times a week because that's really still part of the experience for me.

Also does anyone know what it's like to train martial arts while in Japan? I train Muay Thai mostly, but also dabble in Jiu-jitsu. I know a little about the SHOOTO fighting organization in Japan, so I don't know how most gyms will feel about someone who speaks Japanese worse than a first grader.

Honestly, you aren't being friendly if you do that.

They will just think "oh great, a foreigner...".

it's not rude, but it's not normal, either. Don't shake hands, either.

I'm planning on going over to Nipple in the summer or winter break. I am trying to go for 8-10 days, most likely 8. I made a list of places I want to go to, but it's a big ass clusterfuck and I don't know how to make everything easier. I need help! Also, any recommendations are helpful on places to visit. Google docs gave me a big ass link so it's on tinyurl /j6vrzf7
