Hey /trv/
I'm going to Malaysia at the end of the month for about a week.
Gonna be staying mostly around Kuala Lumpur and then Johor for a couple of days for theme parks and stuff.
Any advice on what to do/see while I'm there?

Bump for interest.. leaving on sunday to Jobor for work for a few weeks. From texas. Is it true you shouldn't wear tank tops as a man? I was told showing your arms is disrespectful.
>>

my brother married a malaysian girl. all the pictures he has from over there are in tanks. its hot as fugg! never heard that yet though, ill ask

There's a lot of things you can do in KL. Twin towers, Batu Caves, park near twin towers is pretty chill, Central Market, Petaling Street, etc. Genting Highland is also pretty close. There's big casino and theme park there.

>>1178198
it is hot and humid. wearing tank tops is ok. as long as you are not wearing hot pants or go shirtless, people wont care
>>

Thing with KL is that you're done with it in 1,5 day, seriously. It's just a big ass city with little history and shitty transportation.

I'd recommend you to stop for two days in another town : either Melaka or Penang. You don't have time to do both, pick.

1/ Stop by in Melaka on your way to Johor Baru. It's a touristy place but for some reason I like it : great food, great historic district (colonial, chinese, baba nyonya...).
There are several fantastic AirBnb there which are pretty cheap.

2/ Now my personal favorité, from KL, go to Penang (gorgeous, greatest culture in Malaysia and best food in the country), and then take an Air Asia plane down to Johor.
It's an incredible island and if you manage to get a rental car, you can go to some crazy mountain temples and gorgeous beaches.

Dude visit langkavi if you can and do one of the boating trips they have there. You catch fish and then stop at some landmass where they basically cook it and serve it up to you with fresh sea salt. They also have lobster etc. Freshest meal I've had in my life. The anon mentioning that you're done in like 1-2 days was kinda right. Batu caves is actually good as well. The murugan temple was great as well highly recommend that

In the hope that I don't hijack this, how do I spend 18 days in Malaysia (only the Western region though)? I already want to do KL for a couple of days along with the Cameron Highlands and Georgetown. I like national parks and I love mountains... but I also need some city time as I'm a low-level part-time digital nomad. I prefer small cities though. Thanks!
>>
>>1177734
Go to Malacca
>>
>>1178962
Bump - any more Malaysia suggestions at all? I particularly like small cities/towns (Georgetown seems cool) and mountains.
>>
>>1179804
Well then it sounds like you'd want to take the train to Georgetown and stop off to see the Cameron Highlands?

i've been in malaysia for the past week and a half, mostly just remote working. stayed in KL last week, visited cameron highlands over the weekend, now i'm back in KL for a few days before flying out to vietnam.

i basically agree there's not that much to do in KL. petronas towers are like "ok, now what?" i've mostly just been trying to eat as much as i can. malay + chinese + indian cuisine = pretty fucking good eating. but as others have said, it's supposedly even better elsewhere in the country.

cameron highlands were very sweet though, if you're short on time and can't visit taman negara i would definitely recommend. the tea plantations are very pretty, and you can do some hiking/trekking nearby. takes about 3-4 hours to get there by bus, and it's easy enough to buy bus tickets online for <$10
>>
>>1179807
Thanks man, that's a good tip!

>>1179859
Is Taman Negara good or is it just a big tourist trap? It looks a little like a natural site that's been turned into a theme park...
>>
>>1177734
KL is trash. Much shittier version of Singapore. Head over to Penang, go to Georgetown, ask around for recommendations and have some of the best street food in the region. Siam Road Char Koay Teow, Nasi Kandar Beratur (get the mutton curry and squid eggs) etc. Can't go wrong there.
>>
>>1178198
Why do third-world shitholes have such retarded regulations when it comes to clothing? Is it because the heat causes their brains to function less efficiently?
>>
Pretty much what everyone else has said. Go to Taman Negara and/or Melacca.

If you're into it, go to Changkat in KL. It's the main drinking area and there's some decent pubs/clubs there with sports/bands playing.
>>
>>1181023
Also I lived there for a long while so if you have any other questions, just ask them.
>>
>>1181023
>>1181025
Do you have any pictures from Taman Negara? Online, the jungle looks dense and interesting, but I prefer panoramas and peaks. Will I find them there?
>>
>>1181431
You'll find a few if you decide to go hiking. There's a lot of peaks and tons of places with a panaromas. Probably not the best place in the world for them but an interesting place to visit nonetheless.

Also, don't have any photos, sorry.
>>
>>1181437
Thanks man!

On another note, I don't like big cities but I like the vibe of large towns which are slightly off the beaten track and in a natural/beautiful setting. Do you have any advice on any of those? I was thinking that Taiping might be a good choice.
>>
>>1181592
Bumping for an answer on this if possible...? Thanks!
>>
>>1181592
Taiping is pretty shit really, Kuala Sepetang (a small riverside fishing village nearby) is a lot better but even that's only worth going to only for a meal.

George Town would be much more worth it if you're planning on going that further north anyways.
>>
>>1181592
Also, east coast has some nice town and beaches if you're into that stuff.
>>
>>1182193
>>1182198
Yeah, Georgetown is already in my plans, it just seems a little more busy and touristy than my ideal type of place. Still looks great though! As for the beach stuff, I appreciate the advice, though it's not really my thing. I prefer hills and mountains and trekking - I've never really understood the appeal of a beach!

What makes Taiping shit?
>>
>>1182210
I'll try one last bump on this - still looking for a smallish town in a nice scenic setting on the peninsular. Thanks /trv/!
