It's a trashy, overpriced Disneyland for adults. The locals are unfriendly, hipster/yuppie douchebags. It's not really worth going there unless you're the trashiest type of tourists.

Why do threads about Amsterdam always turn into such a shitstorm? I'm Dutch, but I don't live there. It's really easy - Amsterdam can be an amazing city and it has a lot to offer. But you have to go look for it and do your research. The center is often flooded with (mostly horrible) tourists. Don't go for the drugs or sex. We all hate drugs/sex tourists, They ruin it for regular tourists and natives. It's NOT the party-central some people look for. It's become the sort of city that rewards you if you do your research, but it can be shit otherwise. I don't get why people are always so polarized about it. It makes me wonder what your expectations were and what you ended up doing.
