Hi /trv/,
in February I will go for 10 days to Mozambique for the very first time. I'm looking for any information about the country, as tourism is scarce and few travellers head there.
From what I know, February is wet season. I'm planning to stay in the south of the country because in the centre there are politics-related shootings and police escort vehicles.
BUMP! It's apparently pretty complicated to find information about this country... Hopefully you, anon, know something!
Lived here for 2 years, 1.5 in sofala and 5 months in cabo delgado. Ask away
How well spoken is portuguese over there?

A few questions:
1) I'm planning to visit the area from Maputo to Vilankulos, if it's safe to go until there. What do you recommend me to visit in this stretch of land? I was thinking Inhaca Island, Bazaruto, Tofo beach and the Maputo fish market
2) Where can I go for a safari in the Maputo/Gaza provinces and how much will it cost me?
3) How do I go around? I was reading chapas and hitch-hiking are the most reliable ways of transport

I'd also like to know how widely spoken Portuguese is in Mozambique.
Is it easy to understand Mozambique Portuguese if you speak Brazilian Portuguese?

Widespread outside of the bush. You'd be hard pressed to find a place wher at least one person doesn't speak it.

1 all good suggestions. I'd also recommend vilankulo for a more chill beach atmosphere, Maputo art market, bilene, xai xai, maxixe.
2 safari in those provinces might be tough. The big parks are north. Massingir in Gaza might be a good option, I hear its a back door to Krueger. No idea on cost.
3 I hitchhike everywhere. Point to the direction you want to go, don't do thumbs. Chapas are miserable for anything other than short distances. Buses are a good option but dangerously fast. My recommendation is for anything over 100km or if you are going to less populated areas, just hitchhike. If you're not black you have a nice advantage. Rides are really easy to pickup, I've hitchhiked over a 1000km in a day without issue.

Wait? Are you Brazilian?
If yes, one of my friends went to Mozambique. She made a post in this website: http://www.falandodeviagem.com.br/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=13581
If you aren't, well, try to use google translate.

Thank you so much for your information. I'm an Italian guy so if I'm tanned I can look Arabic, otherwise I'm white. Anyway any advice on how to deal with safety there? People are trying to instill fear in me, even though the few travel experiences I've read are of solo white women.

Shouldn't be an issue as long as you're cautious. I was relocated due to civil unrest in the center of the country, I'd obviously avoid Sofala province and Tete. Keep your wits about you when then walking thru cities, especially at night. Maputo is pretty safe, but pickpockets and muggers are common. In general and as usual with any African country, err on the side of caution and you shouldn't have any problems. Cops can be assholes, so if you don't want to pay bribes be persistent that your documents are in order and they'll eventually give up.

Thank you very much. I might get a double entry visa (will go to Swaziland or KwaZulu region in South Africa in that case) to have a backdoor option in case there are cyclones or flooding but for almost all the rest I have an idea how to plan. Thanks again!
I am bumping because, maybe, somebody with information has popped up online in the meanwhile...
