*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Please refer to the old thread while it's still up: >>1164928

I've never purchased an international plane ticket before, so I'm quite nervous. I've researched the best time to book a flight to Japan and I've gotten conflicting answers (315 days before, 125 days before, etc). At the moment I have 250 days remaining until the date I'd like to fly. So, should I wait a few more months or book now? Am I too late?
>>
>>1167184
If you are from europe then 500 Euro is the cheapest I've ever seen.

If from the US I would guess you should be able to get if for 400USD?
>>
>>1167184
>>1167194
Depends if you buy a direct ticket or one with a layover. The origin of the flight makes a difference too. I've seen direct flights from JFK around $900 USD now.
>>
Ack. I am in morishita, and don't know where to buy a passmo/suica pass
>>
I am traveling to Japan next thursday, arrivng on friday evening to Narita. Bought a 2 week JR Pass and planned out my itinerary.

10.07 Sleep at Narita (yaay for capsules)
10.08 Narita->Matsumoto castle->Nagano sleep
10.09 Depending on weather either take the Tateyama Kurobe alpine route or travel to Kanazawa for an extra day there
10.10 Day in Kanazawa->Takayama sleepover
10.11 Day in Takayama
10.12 Takayama->Kyoto
10.13-14 Kyoto
10.15 Nara sidetrip
10.16 Kyoto->Koyasan (sleep at the monks)
10.17 Koyasan->Hiroshima->Miyajima sleepover
10.18 Miyajima->Himeji castle->Tokyo
10.19 Nikko sidetrip
10.20-21 Tokyo
10.22 Evening Narita 1 to fly home.

The tickets were 550usd like a month or so before including everything and 30kg pack. About the same for the JR pass. My hostels altogether again around that. Now all there is left the food and some entrance fees...how much should I expect for those?
>>
>>1167215
Forgot to mention, I am traveling from Europe with Turkish airlines and transfer in Istambul 2 hours that way and 11 hours wait back(this one sucks a bit).
Further questions: How easy/hard is it to get by with only english and maybe some japanese I might pick up on the way?
How puntual are the trains and how hard is it to navigate on the train stations (gotta change trains a lot with sometimes little time between arrival and departure)?
Do I have to book my train tickets with the JR pass or I can just hop on (that is my understanding)?
How problematic is it to eat as a diabetic in japan?

/trv Tokyo meet up, last week of December (26-31).

Drop a line if you want to stay in touch:
Kensamameetup at gmail.com

A small status update: based on e-mails I've got, we have 2 key groups: those interested in standard sightseeing/dining and those who aim for comiket/akiba hangout. Therefore, my initial idea is to have a nice dinner with everyone and then split for the next day so both groups would feel comfy. I'll take care of the event logistics arrangement.

>Further questions: How easy/hard is it to get by with only english and maybe some japanese I might pick up on the way?
In big cities English will do In smaller places you need to speak Jap.

>How puntual are the trains and how hard is it to navigate on the train stations (gotta change trains a lot with sometimes little time between arrival and departure)?

You have never seen such perfected public transport in your life. You can use google maps for perfect navigation, its accurate and it even shows which platform you need to board from.

>Do I have to book my train tickets with the JR pass or I can just hop on (that is my understanding)?
With JR pass you can get on all trains with the JR pass. If you want to take a shikansen you can even show your JR pass and reserve a seat in the train.
You basically show the JR pass at the little box where the person sits and he lets you pass.

>How problematic is it to eat as a diabetic in japan?
Kek, no need to worry unless you are diabetic of rice and noodles.
>>
>>1167241
I have to explain one thing further. Make sure to remember NOT all trains work with JR pass. Make sure you verify this. For example in tokyo you will need to buy a Suica to use the trains. A suica is a card where you add money to and check in and out when using the trains.
>>
>>1167244
Won't all trains from the JR line work? I know there are different companies, but shouldnt all trains from this company work?
>>
>>1167184

90 days before is usually the recommendation. Prices are good then.
>>
>work visa being processed
Longest 6 weeks of my life
>>
>>1167294

You mean the certificate of eligibility? The work visa itself only takes 5 days once you have that.
>>
>>1167296
I think so. The law department of the company is taking care of it and their timeline includes 1-3 weeks when the Japanese immigration office is dealing with something.
>>
>>1167262
JR trains in Tokyo are what? The Yamanote line, the Chuo and Sobu lines, and what else?

The only JR trains not included in the pass are a few of the fastest shinkansen, I believe.
>>
>>1167297

I got mine a month ago. Took 5 weeks to process the certificate, a week to arrive at my home and another week to get the visa.

What company are you working for?
>>
>>1167194
>>1167195
In flying from the Northeastern US. I found that the cheapest was doing JFK->LAX->Tokyo at about $150 below a JFK->Tokyo trip with any other layover. Is $950 total too much?
>>
>>1167300
It is the "leading global provider of risk management, insurance and reinsurance brokerage, and human resources solutions and outsourcing services."

I just copied that from the website so you can find out easily.
>>
>>1167300
>Took 5 weeks to process the certificate
Holy shit. Is that purely the Japanese immigration office or does that include your company collecting info and sending it off?
>>
>>1167304

That was just the immigration office. 5 weeks was actually pretty quick, the average processing time for ESL teachers is 6-8 weeks.
>>
i kind of want to retire in japan
>>
>>1167216
The trains are mostly punctual, and they make an effort to ensure connections. That said, when I was there in 2007, once a local train I was on in Aomori prefecture just stopped for half an hour, with an explanation on the loudspeaker in Japanese. And on one connection I was making , I think it was around Akita, I had to wait an extra hour for a train to arrive. Again, there was an explanation in Japanese. Probably due to the effects of earthquakes, but I blamed Gojira at the time.
>>
>>1167305
Interesting. Maybe there's a way to fast-track these applications? Legal promised a maximum of 3 weeks and they apparently have a local provider specialized in this. I can even imagine ESL and other language teachers have there own "queue" seeing how many people treat that as a "free" ticket to Japan. But now I'm a bit worried as I have to attend client meetings starting mid November...
>>
>>1167309

Work visas and certificates of eligibility are split into different categories based on your field. It looks like you're doing marketing or something so you'll definitely have a quicker processing time than I did. But I'd double check that.

Find out what category you're in. ESL teachers are either 'Instructor' or 'Specialist in Humanities.'
>>
>>1167311
Very likely different then as I'm a professional in financial services and will work in that area.
>>
>>1167311
>http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/long/visa2.html
>(Note) However, intra-company transferees may get the visa issued relatively quickly even without this certificate if they are working for a stock exchange-listed company in Japan or a highly trusted company, for example a company that is well known internationally.

Now I'm at ease. But will give legal a ring on Monday. Thanks for the info.

I think you should be able to get one cheaper than 950 for a return trip really. Other american anons should comment on this though.

>>1167262
Yeah all trains from JR work. But in Tokyo it could be inconvenient to use the JR lines to get to places. Just keep in mind that a suica exists. You can buy the card from I believe any trainstation from the machines.

Japanese restaurants want money, they don't really care where you are from. They also got those nice plastic replicas in the windows so you can choose pretty easily

So a few questions coming from someone who is visiting next year for the first time:

What was the most fun place you visited?
The most beautiful place ?
Best food you had ?
Least favorite thing about Japan when visiting?
Is there something you would change for your next trip?
Any tips from experience for first time visiters ?
>>
>>1167431
I can never tell if I'm looking at fried chicken, or fried fish, or fried pig rectum in Japan.
>>
>>1167444
>What was the most fun place you visited?
probably Tokyo, though I liked Fukuoka as well
>The most beautiful place ?
Ishigaki Jima
>Best food you had ?
Asa Tempura on Ishigaki sold in a small store. The whole menu (Asa Tempura, Yakisoba, Adan, Salad+Beer) was also only 800 Yen.
>Least favorite thing about Japan when visiting?
Trains running only until midnight. Also rain but that's not something you can really influence
>Is there something you would change for your next trip?
Not much, just visit different regions (planning Hokkaido or Shikoku next)
>Any tips from experience for first time visiters ?
Learn basic Japanese. It's not needed to get around, but it's nice to be able to speak to people in their native language, even if it's just a few words
>>

>>
>>1167444
>What was the most fun place you visited?
Konpira-san in Kotohira

>The most beautiful place ?
Daisho-in, Miyajima

>Best food you had ?
Hiroshima-yaki

>Least favorite thing about Japan when visiting?
All those Chinese tourists clogging up the tourists spots and hotels.

>Is there something you would change for your next trip?
I'll remember that my Lufthansa tickets get me 2 pieces of luggage, which means I can bring a spare and fill it with weeaboo stuff and other items of interest for the return flight.

>Any tips from experience for first time visitors ?
If you stay in business hotels, bring a RJ45 to USB adapter if their WiFi gets clogged. They often have LAN cables for internet access.
Speaking of WiFi, see "Free Wi-Fi hotspots" here:
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2279.html
>>
>>1167444
Went to Tokyo only during the spring and summer.

>What was the most fun place you visited?
Climbing Mt Takao with friends, festivals, fireworks.

>The most beautiful place ?
Shinjuku Gyoen during cherry blossom season.

>Best food you had ?
Eat-all-you-want BBQ/drinks.

>Least favorite thing about Japan when visiting?
The sun rises too damn early, the humidity during summer is awful, and the trains stop running too early. Also Tokyo is a soul-crushing concrete jungle which gets to your head if you stay for too long.

>Is there something you would change for your next trip?
Visit more places.

>Any tips from experience for first time visiters ?
Play your gaijin card and have fun making a dick of yourself when you're inevitably drunk off 250yen beer in the park.

Heh I don't have to google to find out because I had an interview with them a while back and I still remember this description from my research

You can use the JR pass on the day it expires right, up until 12am of the next day? I didn't last time to be extra safe but i kind of need the full 14 days this time. For example if i activated it on the 10th it would still be valid on the 24th, but not the 25th?

Me and a friend of mine are planning a 14-days trip to Japan for the first time. What are the general advices and tips for the first-timers, and what would be good places to visit?
>>
>>1167578

Learn basic greetings and courtesy. A lot of Japs expect Westerners to be ignorant and discourteous, so it goes a long way if you can show basic manners. Some examples;

- Learn basic greetings; Konnichiwa, Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu etc.
- Learn how to bow
- Learn table manners. Say 'Itadakimasu' before you eat, tell the cook 'Oishii desu' and so on.
- Never hug or kiss in public

The Japanese are very welcoming and will help you out if you're ever stuck, just show your gratitude to them by being respectful.
>>
>>1167582
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. We're still in the early planning phase, so I'll have time to learn some basic Japanese as well.
>>
>>1167549
Separate it by region. Take a day each for central, west, south, and Tokyo Bay assuming you find things in each you want to see.
>>1167578
More info would help. As a general rule though Kyoto is a great place for first timers.
>>
>>1167589
As I said, we're still pretty far from the trip itself (next december), so there's not much planning done.
In general though we're planning to visit Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
>>
>>1167578
For a 14 day trip I would do:
>7-8 days of Tokyo (possibly split something like 6-2)
>3 days in Kyoto (including a day trip to Nara)
>2 days in Osaka
>2 days somewhere else (Kobe, Hiroshima, Hakone would be suitable places near the places you're going to visit anyways)
>>
>>1167594
Sounds great. Would it be convenient to get a JR pass for a trip like this?
>>
>>1167602
yes the 1 week pass would make the trip cheaper (if you want to use the Shinkansen anyways)
>>
>>1167593
I meant what are you interests and budget? Any limitations or must dos?
>>
>>1167593
Why december? Winter limits a lot of things.
>>
>>1167607
The budget without the plane costs would be around 3500-4000 euro. Must-dos are as I said earlier Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.
As for the interests it isn't much, apart from history and nerd stuff.
>>1167613
With our jobs we'll never get days off in summer. What exactly will be limited?
>>
>>1167541
never had any bad sushi but I didn't eat it a lot. even conveyor belt sushi is good value compared to what you get at home. other places are really hit and miss, you can easily have some pretty bad ramen
>>
>>1167582
pointless advice that won't really get you anywhere, the japanese don't do any of this and all you'll get is a nod from the chef
>>
>>1167625

Speak for yourself. Most of the people in my area do that stuff and I had a better time when I started doing it in return.

If you just want to stay in a big city then obviously manners are less important like any city.
>>
>>1167176
Always been into Japan,
checking this board out, really inspiring shit.
I got a crippling fear of flying and I'm bad with saving money. I took a plane to Toronto and I was fine. I did until Calgary and I freaked out but I can feel it getting better.
I think I will be able to fly.

That being said,
I want to find a job there but my CV looks like shit and I don't have a university degree?

Any ideas?

I know there's like, working the gondola and shit.

Also just a quick question, is it true the girls throw themselves at white dudes? That really disheartening because I don't want to be liked just because I am white.
>>
>>1167634
>Any ideas?
get a degree and you'll be able to work as an English teacher. Other options are marrying a Japanese woman or getting a useful skill and having the necessary experience in a needed field. There's also working holidays, which some countries in the world can do

>Also just a quick question, is it true the girls throw themselves at white dudes? That really disheartening because I don't want to be liked just because I am white.
no
>>
>>1167637
Give up my Canadian citizenship? Woah.

And I hope they don't throw themselves because if I want a Japanese gf I want her to like me for me. Also how bad is the english over there? Heard it's real bad. Not good 'cause communication is fucking everything.
>>
>>1167638
>Also how bad is the english over there?

pretty bad, but if you want to work there you should learn the language anyways desu
>>
>What was the most fun place you visited?
Shitty clubs in Shibuya were girls seemed to love gaijins.

>The most beautiful place ?
The area around Mt Fuji was beautiful, the countryside lanes/houses. Pic related somewhat. (that is the track under fuji)

>Best food you had ?
Unagi from those 24/7 vending machine places at 3am, drunk.

>Least favorite thing about Japan when visiting?
How expensive everything was. How awkward people are.

>Is there something you would change for your next trip?
I'd learn a bit more Japanese.

>Any tips from experience for first time visiters ?
Buy a Suica card on your FIRST DAY.
>>
>>1167634

They won't throw themselves at you just because you're white. White guys have it easier because most of the time they're more sociable and less shy than Japanese men.

So if you're too beta to talk to women in your own country don't expect Japan to be any different. If you're confident with girls already then it's easy to get a Japanese girlfriend.
>>
>>1167648
I didn't find girls "throwing themselves" at me, but I did find it way way way easier to get girls. I think it was a bit of a cycle though, in that I got more confident, so it got easier. But in general, yeah they seemed very up for it.
>>
>>1167641
Figured this much.
I actually can speak Japanese and understand it pretty well.
I don't want anime but I really don't want to speak Japanese of fear of looking like a weeb. Also I just cringe at the thought of whitey speaking Japanese.
>>
>>1167649

They didn't throw themselves at me either but if I asked one out to dinner they always said yes. Usually fucked on the second or third date. It was definitely a huge confidence boost.

Also, a lot of them believe stereotypes about white guys. They'll expect you're going to be romantic, i.e. holding open doors and going for fancy dinners. A couple of them actually shaved their pubes off without me asking because they heard most gaijin prefer it.

So just meet their expectations when possible and you'll be happy.
>>
>>1167651
Yeah being British and hearing the "gentleman" stereotype they had of us was hilarious. They fucking LOVED that shit.
>>
>>1167650

A 'weeaboo' is a Western idea. The Japanese have no idea what it is. Most girls prefer if you speak some Japanese. Just NEVER mention anime, video games or anything vaguely otaku. That's the point of no return.

But you can find an English-speaking girl if you put the effort in. I've had a few dates with ones from apps like Hellotalk or at international societies. Just don't expect them to speak English well enough for you to have any deep discussions or to watch movies without subtitles.
>>
Hello everyone, looking for a little help here.

I'm going to Japan at the end of next month and I'm spending five days in Tokyo, so I'm trying to optimise my time as best as I can in order to see everything. I'm debating whether or not to drop Roppongi from my itinerary. The main motivation for going to Roppongi was that my boyfriend wants to visit a Hard Rock Café, but there's one in Ueno right next to the station.

It seems that the most optimised time to go to Roppongi is on my birthday after we finish up in Tokyo Tower between 6-8pm. However, Roppongi to me doesn't exactly scream 'romantic birthday evening in Tokyo'. Is such a thing possible in what seems like party city? Any especially nice places you'd recommend? We're based in Shinjuku (Kabukicho specifically) if you think it's better to go back early and make a romantic evening there.

Also, when does Tokyo begin with the Christmas decorations? We'll be in Tokyo until December 7th, I'd die with happiness if I saw some lovely decorations.

Thank you for your help!
>>
>>1167654
Most (college aged) Japanese people I met knew what a weeaboo was, or at least knew otaku were losers.

That being said attempting to speak Japanese isn't really seen as a bad thing. A lot of people appreciate the effort.
>>
>>1167660

They know what otaku are. If you watch anime and play video games you're just an otaku to them.

It's a little different from a weeaboo since they don't care if you try to be Japanese, they just don't want you being a cringelord who talks about anime and plays with katanas.
>>
>>1167659
Shinjuku is like what your are thinking Roppongi is like. Trashy and dirty. Roppongi has some very upmarket places like Roppongi Hills.
>>
>>1167654
>Just NEVER mention anime, video games or anything vaguely otaku

tfw actually several girls know hokuto no ken and they loved when I said "omae wa mo shindeiru" in a deep voice.

As look as you just say you watch some its fine, just dont go around telling them you like idolshit.
Japanse people are very nice and open. But just like in the west, don't be ugly.

>>1167659
Roppingi isnt really romantic no. It does have a cool shrine/temple where a lot of people ring the bell and pray.
>>
>>1167654
Welp, I design video games.
No chance in working for a game company huh?

Funny enough you mention Hellotalk, found out what i was about 2 days ago, met a Japanese girl in my area. I'm too weird for her.
>>
>>1167663
Ahh okay, that's fair enough. I sorta suspected Shinjuku to be like that but we're mostly just doing shopping there. I was wondering if it was even slightly more romantic than Roppongi. I didn't actually know Roppongi Hills was considered 'separate', I just thought it was an alternative name for Roppongi. Would you know if it's extremely upmarket though? We'd probably be willing to pay around $200 for the luxury of saying we had a nice meal in a nice place on my birthday.

>>1167665
Oh I heard of that shrine, don't think we'd have access to it though if we were going at around 7pm.
>>
>>1167669
It's still open until late, but I wouldn't go out of your way to visit just 1 think in Roppongi.

You also see some guy with I think some kind of rental girls in the streets. Not sure how it works. They dont talk to foreigners but I it looks tacky
>>
>>1167668

It's not a black and white situation. I'm mostly referring to people who go over there and start talking about Persona, Dark Souls and Metal Gear Solid as if the Japanese know what you're talking about. The problem is a lot of them pretend to be interested in what you're talking about when they aren't so it's easy to unknowingly alienate them.

honestly I found that as someone who doesn't watch anime / manga etc. That it was way more normalised in culture than I was expecting. It's crazy to see that shit in literally every single 7/11. And man there is a LOT of those. I saw cute girls reading that stuff , I saw normal looking guys. It's all about a balance man. If you go full dweeb mode then sure, you're going to look bad. But treat it like a normal tv show you watch or something and you'll be fine. Not that there's any reason to bring it up . Girls are more interested in your own country, and your experience of Japanese food and the city etc.

Most white guys don't speak Japanese. They have it easier that Japanese guys in terms of girls specifically looking for a foreign boyfriend though.

If even mentioning nerd shit makes you instantly unattractive, that says more about you.

Easy answer is: language exchanges. if they're young and explicitly mention dating they're probably a club girl, if they don't they're probably fair game, if they say "no dating!!!!!!" & respond to guys they're about to get married/recently married, never got to travel much and want to have a affair with a foreign dude for consolation.

Hard (but probably better) answer is: wherever you meet girls in your country.

Question for those ITT who have spent a considerable amount of time in Japan.

I was taking the train to Nikko, and sitting across from two teenagers. The girl looked practically 14, very tiny, and spent the whole trip till her stop acting like a very shy child with her bf. It was really weird his she was. But, they ended up getting off at a stopped pretty far from where either got on (they got on at different stops), along with other teens.

So, my questions are

1: do Japanese girls typically act really weird with their bf? Like, childike?

2: Do Japanese kids go to scho really far from their house, or something?

I mean, I know they apply to highschool's or whatever, and that determines their lives, or something. But it seemed weird to see teens on a train, on a weekday, going crazy far.

People through out the greater Kantou region travel pretty far.

You can do pretty much everything in Tokyo, but usually theres only a few places to do any non-extremely popular hobby, and if you're coming from Yokohama, Chiba, or Dasaitama your choices are usually going to have to come into Tokyo.

Even with things like getting food, theres always a list of only a few places that are popular at any given moment, especially since Japanese are extremely fickle when it comes to restaurants.

When it comes to girls, I've found that girls and guys 10-20 tend to act way more immature than their western counterparts, but by the time the women are hitting about 25, they are way more mature and interesting than their western counterparts. Guys are hit or miss and Kantou guys especially tend to stay boring their whole lives but don't really act mature until they've been crushed by work.
>>

In parallel, get something about grammar, pretty much no big difference, just try to use several books instead of just one. Some like minna nihongo but it'll require some prior knowledge, some stick with tae Kim but his approach is sometimes doubtful, so try it for yourself.
Oh, and create your own deck with those fancy kanji you find in manga, ads, etc

I come from a country where tax is already included in the price - what you see is what you pay. It never dawned on me that Japan may not operate that way until I went to a Japanese shop online. This is what I saw:

販売価格 ¥5,820 (税抜)
消費税
¥465
税込
¥6,285
315ポイントサービス (税込価格の5%分)

Shitty Google translate version:

Selling price ¥ 5,820 (tax)
consumption tax
¥ 465
tax included
¥ 6,285
315 point service (5% of the tax-inclusive price)

Does this mean if I buy in a tax-free shop and present my passport, I pay ¥ 5,820 rather than ¥ 6,285? Do I pay what seems like the service charge added on at the end as well? Thank you for your help.

2) I'm in Japan for four months to travel, but as I have to work (most of it online, but I also teach occasionally), I can't travel all the time and have to be based in cities for 2-4 weeks. So far I was based in Osaka and Kyoto (I'd like to focus on everything south from there because I lived in Tokyo before and will do the north on another trip). Don't go into any club or bar that a tout is trying to convince you to go to. Most of them are shit.

However just because a place has a tout doesn't mean its bad. Quite a few of them can be good on certain days and they just have a guy they've hired for every night because they're slow on other days.

Just sit outside, drinking, and watch the places and go into the places where you actually see Japanese girls going into. The area past Family Mart, with the outside toilets is particularly a good place to people watch since theres 4 clubs right there.

However GasPanic on the main street is ALWAYS bad. Even on amazing nights like Halloween its always the worst one.

Persistently annoying /out/ guy going to Japan here, again.

I'll be going WWOOF'ing and hiking in Japan for a year, and in that regard I've read up on Japanese knife legislation in order to make sure what tools I can bring with me to Grorious Nippon. My axe has been cleared, and I've gotten my knife cut down to fit.

Now, the nice elderly couple that I'm going to stay with to begin with wants me to build a fence out of bamboo. For those of you who've ever worked with bamboo, you know how much of a bitch that plant is to cut and work with. So, I'd like to bring my machete (pictured) with me. However, as you might expect, the Japanese government considers it to be a fucking sword and illegal for me to even have without express permission.

Now, question: If I cut the tip off as pictured, would it still count as a blade? I know that some countries doesn't define it as a knife/blade/sword unless it has a sharp tip, and I've seen pictures of Japanese machetes (Nata, I think it's called?) with the same shape; no sharp tip.

>oh god fuck off /out/ist gimme a tl;dr
If I circumcise my machete like pictured, does it count as a knife or simply a tool?

I really don't want to go to some Reddit shithole to get an answer to this question.

Hope this clears up something. P.S. Im planning to travel in the november so any sugestions are welcome.

>>
>>1168966
Sir, you're basically saying that you are too lazy to invest your time in preparation, so other people should do it for you. That's not how things work. Return only when you have specific questions, let me make an example:
- I want to live close to the coast. Currently trying to select between e.g. Kamakura and Atami. Which one would be a better base? Key priority is swimming and tasty "meal name" around. Although you still can google it, you will get replies. For now, "kys" is the only fair expectation you should have from this board.
Is this clear?
>>
>>1168980
It is. on another note, I've done week worth of research and its not somtething i can afford with 1keuros. im looking for ideas on how to make it possible if there are any cheaper alternatives.

Ofc i would like to swim and bbq on the beach thus the love for the coastline... Im just bad at this forget it ^_^. Thanks for your input :)

Is Lake Biwa worth a day trip from Kyoto?

I also read that Monday is going to be a holiday, namely sports day? Will there be anything of interest for tourists or is it just going to be school sports festivals and such?

Do pretty much all shrines/temples stamp your book, or is it only a few? The only one I have so far is from Nikko, and now thati am in Kyoto, I'd like to get some more. I just don't want to offend if its more of a tourist thing, and I ask at the wrong kind of shrine

Probably a silly question, but I have never travelled much.

What sort of souvenirs to buy in Tokyo, or just in general?

I'd like to bring back some stuff to my family and a few friends, but I'm really bad at buying presents and stuff so I just can't find anything I feel is worth it.

I'm also going to Kyoto and Osaka if it helps.
>>
>>1168995
There are two sets of waterfalls. I can't remember which is which, but there is a waterfall directly behind the station and through a tiny little town. Then if you climb farther up the mountain there is another waterfall, which I think is the one you see from the ropeway. You can always check them out on the walk down from the top of the mountain if you want to.

Cheap maneki neko or daruma doll, easily found on junk row leading to Sensoji in Asakusa. Green tea stuff: Green tea, green tea KitKats, etc.

man, there's a bit of a leap from kitsch tier to patrician.
I saw a shop with those knives, and they did not go under 10000 yen at least I think.
No one in my family I wanna spend that much on.

Every gift shop I've been in sells so much types of candy or whatever, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to buy that since I don't know what it even is or what it tastes like.

I would actually like to buy a nice katana, but it seems too weaboo, and also expensive

As I had mentioned in my post. I was in a hurry and since English is not my native language I had spit out a horrible sentence.
This isn't an American only image board and if he feels the need to comment on the post, I also feel the need to comment on his.
>>
>>1169299
But then what if I feel the need to comment on your newest post? And then you feel the need to comment on this one? It quickly spirals out of control and soon we are hip deep in boring posts that are not on the topic of travel at all, such as this one I am writing now.

Perhaps not taking the bait in the first place would have been smarter? But it is too late for that -- he responded, you responded, I responded. We three are doomed, the past cannot be undone -- but maybe future posters can learn from our mistakes.

I'm planning on a trip next year sometime around Fall with a friend. I'm thinking 2 weeks should be enough. I plan on doing AirBnB instead of a hotel since I've had many people reccomend that. I'd think the best idea would be to reserve one in Tokyo since a good portion of the places I want to visit will be around that area (Shibuya, Akihabara, etc), but I found a good priced one next to Sagami Bay and I think it would be great to have a seaside view, but I worry about the distance I'd have to travel. Which would be better? Also would like to check out Kyoto or Osaka for sightseeing/history/nature? Any recommendations? What about Mt. Fuji?

Sorry if I'm asking so many questions. I want to be fully prepared.

Went to Kobe today. Was having a pretty good time, despite getting lost while hiking and going an extra 2miles up the wrong mountain. Went to get real Kobe beef from a well reviewed place, and honestly never felt more unwanted anywhere. Thy actually forgot about me after the chef had prepared the beef, and while everyone else was getting attentively waited on, they never came back to give me the desert that came with it, or even to clear my plate. After a whilr, I just kinda got up, paid, and left. I don't know that the chef knew that I know he called me a "dumb white asshole" to the other chef, and I didn't bother saying anything. Just kinda ruined the rest of the day so far, since I'm always very polite, and try to speak Japanese when I can.

Buy it at a ticket machine at the station.
>>
>>1167262
Although you'll be able to hop on and off at all of the JR stations, you will need to ride Tokyo Metro for other places in particular, and sometimes even if the particular place you're headed to has a JR station, it may be faster to just take the metro. So I definitely recommend you pick up a Suica or Pasmo card as >>1167395 suggests. Its a 500 yen deposit, but you can get it back by going to the station office before you leave.

lol'd. Kabukicho is literally a red light district filled with brothels and strip clubs. With that said though, it's very convenient and safe in western standards.

I'm going to Japan at the end of the year for a 3 week uni course. I've added on 2 weeks at the end for personal travel. My problems are:

I'm by myself, and only know JLPT 5 Jap. (super basic, couldn't hold a conversation)
I'm dirt fucking poor, only have just over 2.5k for the whole trip, minus plane tickets
I'm vegetarian, and allergic to fish

Any advice for super cheap things to do, and how not to die from fish poisoning?

For accommodation, I was thinking of a place like borderless-house, which has a minimum ~one month stay, and is more like a share house rental than a hotel. Is this a good idea? I'll have to be based in Tokyo for my uni course for at least 3 weeks.

For activities, I was thinking about doing a whole bunch of winter hiking (free). Is this a good idea? Any recommended winter spots, that don't require technical climbing?

Any other dirt cheap shit you could recommend?
