Well it's exactly what it sounds like; 5 days of conferences, events and parties in pretty much every music related venue in Amsterdam.
I personally wouldn't do all 5 days just for the sake of it, just pick the ones you'd actually like to attend. During the day there are lots of free talks/workshops/exhibitions, don't forget to check that out. Also keep in mind that friday and saturday night will be busy as fuck and you might already be too late to buy tickets for some events. I'd personally skip these since the crowd is more fun and laid back during the other days.

Weather in October is usually like 10-15 degrees C with overcast. Decent chance at rain too. Bring autumn clothing and an umbrella.

depends on your interests. I went to Reukmuseum and Heineken museum (15euros each), there were nice if you're into those things. There are more museums to visit also. You can spend time just walking around, there are great neighborhoods in the centre, nice buildings and atmosphere.

You can get weed and stuff in any coffee shop, for drinking i can't recommend any cheap place, i hope some local guy will post.

If anyone knows any really cheap place for decent food, please write, last time i went food was really a problem for poorfucks like me.

Went there before, just for three nights. Visited Heineken museum and Reukmuseum. But I think Reukmuseum was for free.
I have actually booked my tickets to AMS from 25th October for a week to stay. Planning to re-visit Heineken museum and definitely to visit Van Gogh museum. Aslo during these dates ADE (amsterdam dance event) will be happening. Lots of places will be playing music, some of which will be even free to enter.

Would also like to hear some suggestions about where to go to eat and maybe spend some quality time.

5 days in Amsterdam is too much, more so the center. Rent a bike and go to the westergasfabriek park and just outside the city. Wandering around the canals is nice but it gets old pretty fast.. window whores are ugly senpai, everything is crazy expensive for what it is and idk. Amsterdam was my first time out of the country and while I loved the city itself, I think is kinda overrated. Do some day trips from Amsterdam for sure. Was there just a few days ago

Im not local but Ive been a few times. It is decent priced near Centraal Station (around 4-5EUR for a 500ml glass) and gets much dearer further inwards you go. Thats my experience

I went to Amsterdam this summer, and while I had fun, it didn't felt like a real city with real Dutch people living there, but more like a giant playground for tourists.
There are too many people on those small pavements and it's stressful. It's quite expensive if you don't go buy most of your stuff at Albert Heijn. I heard dudebros speaking my native language at every street corner, and then you don't feel like you are abroad anymore, more like at Disneyland Europa : 420 Edition.
Also, I remember hearing a dozen people singing No Woman No Cry in the central station with the available piano. I mean, come on, I like smoking weed too, but you don't have to be a stereotypical stoner like that.
By contrast, I saw a piano teacher and one of his student playing neat classical pieces in the Den Haag train station, and my high was way more enjoyable with those guys around. That shit wouldn't happen there.
Anyway, If you ever go to Amsterdam, visit the Rijksmuseum, get a nice bottle of oude jenever at Gall & Gall if you like spirits, get baked and enjoy the music in the Jazz Café Alto if you don't know what else to do, and consider visiting Den Haag and Utrecht.
I regret not spending more time in those cities because Den Haag seems quite beautiful in some places, and different from the typical red bricks + canals stuff, and Utrecht is like a mini-Amsterdam with way less tourists, and it seem to have like a very lively nightlife due to its big student population. And both of them felt like cities where some real Dutch people live in.

I'm from near Amsterdam, and as a Dutch person I have to say I often also have this feeling when I'm in the center. It's pretty much tourists everywhere, and quite some of the staff at the gift stores are hippie foreigners can't speak Dutch. At restaurants there is also foreign staff that can't speak Dutch, but more normal acting ones lol.

My number 1 tip to tourists is to visit the Rijksmuseum, because it's filled with great art from all over the ages. It's more worth for your money than the van Gogh museum, because it has more variety (and Rijksmuseum has some van Gogh paintings). Besides, Rembrandt>van Gogh.

And for those who want to visit a city that is typically Dutch, but not filled with tourists: Leiden.

I'll be staying at Amsterdam for 4 days, at the Tuindorp Oostzaan area.

How does traffic work? I've just been to Spain and you can either get 10 drives for 10 euro or a 4 days drive to wherever you want for like 26euro, is it the same in Amsterdam? I also need to pass the canal in order to get to central, I understood there is a free ferryride, is it something you can count on at all hours?
also should I rent a bike or is to costly and hard to mobilize from where I am from?

Good coffee shops - that wont be the only thing i'm doing but its always good to know which ones are the best, both price and quality wise.

Food and drinks - good places to eat that aren't super expensive, my friend told me to stick to subway and McDonald since everything else is just super expensive, I do have an apartment so I can cook if it comes down to it.
Good bars are also great to know of.

Nightlife & Interesting stuff - what are some good parties, and places to go during the day.
I know of the Heineken museum, Wax museum, Anna Frank but these sound like boring tourist traps that just burn a hole in your pocket.

Sorry for the long post, it's just that I'd like to be prepared and I found that its always nice having 1 or 2 places planned in advance for the first day or two so you dont just wander around aimlessly.

you can get a feel for Dutch culture and such in Amsterdam as well, you just have to avoid the overly-touristy center, not even by much

at some point it's not that easy to distinguish tourists from expats, and there's a lot of expats in Amsterdam; a lot of them have been living here for many years and still don't speak Dutch, because it's not reaaally needed, or they get by without it

so don't assume that everyone that doesn't speak Dutch is a tourist, they might actually be non-dutch "locals" or students

otherwise, you can also got Haarlem, Gouda, Leiden, and Utrecht, for cute Dutch places that aren't too crowded

There ferry service is free and very reliable. Rent a bike. Cook in your apartment, supermarkets are great here and very cheap when comparer with restaurants. Go to Stedelijk Museum if you're into Modern Art, it's on the museum square and often skipped by tourists but its the best one imo. As another Anon suggested the Eye is cool too. There's also lots of parks around or you could bike to het Amsterdamse Bos and walk around there. If you're into clubbing see the post above me. If you do want to go to one of those places you should get ticket before hand, know what is playing and dress and act like you belong. They don't like to have a lot of tourists in there, so sometimes they deny them access. For concerts Tolhuistuin, Paradiso, Bitterzoet are all pretty nice. Sugarfactory sometimes has nice gigs and parties too.

Beautiful paintings that tell a lot about the unique way of life in Amsterdam during the 17th century.

Furthermore, do a canal tour, rent a bike, visit Vondelpark, Begijnhof, Artis zoo, Hortus Botanicus and just wander through the city during sunrise.
