SoCal resident here. Its fairly expensive but I don't think Id want to live anywhere else but here and further up the west coast. Theres a lot of diversity in the people and the food. Theres good hiking and obviously the beach if your into those things as well. A thing to note, the longer you live here the less it feels like a beach state and the more it feels like a desert state. This is a good thing in my opinion. I've never been to texas but Ive heard austin is quite nice. I have some family there. It you particularly want diversity Id say give california a shot, otherwise texas might be the better option, particularly if you don't have a degree. Arizona can be quite nice as well. Any further deeper into the south I wouldn't suggest, but mostly out of personally preference. I grew up in Georgia though. Super comfy.

Sitting here in Texas. America, like everywhere has good and bad. I think there is still a lot of opportunity for people who work hard to be successful. It is a big place and very diverse. As far as Texas goes, we have low cost of living and housing. There is very little public transportation and everyone owns a vehicle, often a truck. The people are friendly for the most part. Yes we do have guns, lots of them, but our crime rate is low. There is a large area that was settled by and still has heavy German influence. You could live worse places. SoCal is beautiful and has awesome weather, but the cost to live there is very high by our standards.

The mountains of NC/VA, beaches areas all around the coast and many of the piedmont areas are beautiful, folks are very friendly, the New South urban areas are good if you like urban stuff... The only real thing to watch out for in the South is the weather -- where it is hot and humid it is pretty bad. Obviously, like anywhere, the poor/rural areas are poor and rural, poor urban areas are poor and urban. But it is possible to pass a very good time down here, if you've a mind to.

I think online dating is the way a lot of people are meeting these days. You can go old school and put yourself in social situations where you will have a chance to meet people, this could be bars, church, a bowling league, cooking classes, whatever, just get yourself out there.

Driving through Texas is the most god-awful boring way to pass time that I have ever encountered. Depending on how badly you want to see what you want to see there, you might modify your schedule/route a bit. It is huge, and empty between cities, and not particularly scenic. I do not care for Houston, though there are some things worth seeing there, particularly the Johnson Space Center.

If you live in Western Germany or the Bavarian region and you are moving to America then stick to the West Coast, trust me on this. Your quality of life will decrease dramatically if you go near the jungle regions/most of the east coast especially the entire south. I also want to move to the us, i've only been to Philadelphia, New York and Providence. Providence and Philadelphia seemed cool, but Providence seems a little small and I often read it has major issues with poverty. And everyone knows philadelphias reputation.
