The problem with visiting Africa isn't that it's not safe. It's that most tourists end up going to the same expat places that foreign worker go to, but they don't have companies willing to spend $150/day on them.

Foreigners are usually only allowed in Asmara, but it's actually a neat city. Much of it was built by the Italians in the 30s. It's considered the worst dictatorship after north korea, but people go there too.
