Would you recommend it for solotravel? What is there to do?
Is it safe and should I hire a car?
I want to go because flights are extremely cheap (280€ return)

The Gambia is supersafe, no problem traveling there, but as always with countries where there ar some pettytheft etc. keep your valubles to your self and don't go into all the backalleys.

Pretty much confirms what every source I can find agrees -- that the move is a diplomatic one as The Gambia seeks no allies as old ones fall away, with little or no immediate impact on the citizenry of the country, and virtually none on travelers.
