*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Just out of sheer curiosity, when do people start getting married/having kids in Japan?

Is it like in America where people are graduating high school and having kids and getting married in their early 20s, or even earlier?

Women try to get married in their early 20s and guys try to get married in their late 20s. Its still a trend but the trend has been declining

Nagasaki was pretty cool, Fukuoka is also really nice. Other cool places included Aso, Kagoshima and Kurokawa Onsen, probably one of my favorite places I've been to in Japan so far. Beppu is an overrated shithole though, don't go there

I have a question regarding the train system on Google Maps. For example, I want to go from Pearl Hotel Ryogoku to the Shinjuku Station. On Google Maps, it shows me the different ways I can go and how much each one will be (the one I chose was by train and it will be 270 yen)

However, it says 11 stops and when I click on it I am given 11 stations. Are these 11 stations the train I'm on will pass and therefor the train will stop 11 times or will I have to actually get out of the train and get into another one 11 times?

Pics for better understanding

I'm travelling soon and I need to go from Narita Airport to Kaihinmakuhari station. Google maps says I can take the "Narita Airport Limusine Bus", but the limusine bus website is a bit confusing and I could only find info about buses going from Haneda Airport to kaihinmakuhari, not from Narita.

Have any of you ever used the limusine bus service? Should I just try the trains? Supposedly this bus stops right in front of my hotel, if I get the train I will need to walk for 5 minutes or something like that.

Hyperdia provides much better results for the trains and allows for customization. Google just shits out whatever generic algo results they have for every city in the world. Yahoo has the best one but you need Japanese

Going to Tokyo in December, is the train network really complicated to navigate if you are completely unable to read a lick of japanese, or is it manageable?

>"Narita Airport Limusine Bus"
I had an early flight on my way home, so this worked great for me, takes around the same time as the train overall as it dropped me at my hotel. Didn't have to worry about being late, getting the wrong train etc.

>Buy return ticket at Limousine Airport Bus desk when leaving the Narita. Tell them where you're staying and what time you want to leave.
>Go to the corresponding bus stop outside. Give the guys working there you ticket when asked.
>Get on bus, get off at your stop about an hour and a half later.
>When checking in to your hotel, give them your return bus ticket and book a seat for the journey home, they'll have a timetable for you to pick when to leave.
>Be at the reception desk about 20 mins before your bus leaves to play it safe. You'll be escorted to it at the right time.
>>
>>1156288
I didn't say google maps would fail you, I said the others are better and allow for more options, like only using a certain company, putting in your commuter pass/day pass for cheapest rates, a larger number of trips that end up at the same place etc.

>>1156297
Just got here a few days ago. It's simple enough. Most signs are in English, and if that's too complicated just ask a staff member and they will point you in the right direction.

I've begun planning a post graduation trip to Japan for myself and a friend.

We're currently budgeting 460,000 JPY each for the trip with the possibility of expanding.

We'd like some advice on the itinerary, the dates are set as we've already booked flights to and from Japan. It's only rough at the moment but we are trying to figure out if:
-We've got a reasonable mix of places to see both modern and cultural sights.
-We've set ourselves up with too much time in some places and not enough in others.

I've never been to Japan before but my friend has previously studied in Fukuoka short-term and visited Tokyo and Hiroshima. However the itineraries were mostly set out by the university etc and didn't allow for much time to travel freely.

Also some advice on going to see a metal show would be cool.

>>

>>
>>1156391
I would drop 2 days from Hiroshima unless there are some sidetrips in there that you didn't include. I feel like you could streamline your itinerary a little so you're not backtracking as much. I'm assuming you're flying in/out of Osaka and that you want to be in Tokyo for the New Year. Personally I would move your visit to Nagoya to right after Osaka.
>Osaka
>Nagoya
>Shirakawa
From here you can go straight to Tokyo, or my recommendation is check out some of the other towns in the alps, e.g. Takayama and Matsumoto. Matsumoto actually connects directly to Tokyo so there's a perk to visiting this town (it's also very quaint and a nice place to visit for a day).
>Tokyo

>>1156471
Depends if you take the shinkansen or not. I cut through the mountains and stopped at towns along the way (Matsumoto to Kamikochi to Takayama to Kanazawa). There were local trains except for one leg (Kamikochi to Takayama, had to take a bus). By the way, I recommend seeing ninjadera (myoryuji temple) at Kanazawa. You can reserve a tour at the site and they give you a binder in English to follow along. It was pretty cool.

Getting a job in Japan is fairly simple for English teaching. I got a prelaw/legal studies degree and got a job after one interview a week ago.

If you're looking for work as an ALT (assistant language teacher) it'll be a bit tougher now because they've already filled their positions for this year. Obviously people will quit and the like so you MIGHT find something, but even if they can't they still recruit all year round so apply now and you could get a spot for next march/may.

Eikawa or private english conversation schools hire ALL YEAR ROUND and are fairly easy to get into. As I mentioned, I went through one 30 minute interview and got a job for 33kUSD per year.
>>
Am I the only one who used both google maps and hyperdia?

Hyperia for shinkansen and usual trains, especially in rural areas. Google maps for subways in bigger cities and live tracking via gps where I'm currently at while riding on the trains or navigating through the city.

What are some good healthy foods I should look out for in Japan, both in restaurants and in 7/11s? I swear I'm not some pretentious vegan hippie, I just have a really bad bowel. My friend is planning on eating nothing but ramen during the holiday and that would 100% land me in hospital. I plan on eating a lot of delicious salmon and tuna, but even then too much protein causes problems for me.

>>
>>1156621

>>
>>1156538
Yams are popular in Japan and should be easy to digest, along with rice, mushrooms, miso soup, and veggies. Look into macrobiotic cusine for something cleaner and healthier than the usual fare.
>>
>>1156623
The application time is strict. If you will graduate this December or May, you can apply. The application opens up in October.
>>
>>1156538
I'd recommend trying to eat a balanced diet when you can. I found Japan to focus lots on protein and starches. Try to balance those out with fruit and veg for the fibre. You can get sandwiches and salads from the conbini. Lots of the travel issues I think can be due to eating too much of a food you don't regularly eat, such as really oily or rich foods.

Regular grocery stores can be good for fresh produce and easy meals. Western cuisine is also pretty common if you're feeling off. Bring stomach meds with you, and look up the vocab for more before you go.

>Planning a trip to japan next year

I'm currently debating between spring and summer. I really would like to see the sakura and go to a certain bonsai convention, however: I also had an interest in climbing Fuji.

My understanding is this is still doable in the april/may timeframe, but my research into this say I would not be able to rent any equipment (and bringing it would be a big pain in the ass).

Option 2 for me would involve going in late June or so, but then I have to deal with the rainy season, however I would be around for the actual opening of climbing season.

I would say I am interested in both items about equally (biased to spring due to bonsai) but if anyone has opinions on climbing Mt. Fuji vs seeing cherry blossoms from an enjoyment standpoint I would love to hear. In addition, my plan is to be there for about a month, regarding the april/may timeframe, is Golden Week really that bad? I have some family friends who went back in the early 2000's and said it was fine, but I have no idea how much things might have changed since then.

So I just got a job offer to work the snow season up in Niseko this year, I'll be up there for about 4-5months all in all. Is there any advice you guys have when it comes to working and living in japan or just suggestions on things I should prepare?
>>
>>1156707
I'm biased towards spring because the summer humidity is total ass. And yes, if you're visiting anything remotely touristy during Golden Week you can bet on it being jam packed.

Hanami is pretty sweet, assuming you have friends to drink with but at a certain point there's only so many different parks you can get wasted in under the falling petals. You need to be careful with the dates or you'll miss the full bloom and whatnot.

As for summer, I think there are generally more festivals, and you'll be able to visit the biggest fireworks festivals of the year. Just be prepared to start sweating as soon as you step outside your house though.

Does anyone have experience using Japan WiFi for mobile wifi?
Also has anyone ever had any issues with having a wifi device delivered to their hotel before arriving? Just wondering if they were cool with it or if I should email them beforehand. I won't have time to pick it up at Narita due to some transport issues.
>>
>>1156782
As a counterpoint, Japanese people will go on and on about how awful the humidity is in Honshu during the summer. A constant talking point.

Its literally the exact same weather as on the east coast of the US during the summer, with the weekly thunderstorms replaced with one or 2 typhoons. Sure its not pleasant but its so over hyped and made out to be way worse than it actually is

I haven't seen the Cherry blossoms, but I would certainly go in April/May just to avoid the rainy season. That said, my favorite time is August because of the festivals and the heat
>>
>>1156805
I noticed this too actually. Even people from the east coast act like the heat is unbearable, which makes no sense. If anything, it's easier to deal with since you can't walk 2 minutes in one direction without finding a vending machine with cool water.

Sure, but be realistic. Are you aware of just how many sites sell Japanese goods? They buy in bulk, and can offer discounts - as well as very reasonable shipping prices . You're talking about singular items.

Do you think there's a market for that?

>>

Do not hesitate and do not explain more than necessary. If you have the name, address and phone of the guy you'll be staying with, then you can give them that info IF asked. Maybe you can't get the idea of different cultures having different norms and values.
You might for example have thought of it this way. Korea is extremely Westernized and full of Ameriboos, and its club/dating scene is fucked seven kinds of sideways because of traditional norms falling apart and people needing to party their brains out to recover from being worked 80 hours a week for a business that's likely indirectly owned by the government and that you can't afford to fuck up on.
Japan is a face culture in which the Japanese person is the host and you're the guest, and it's considered more polite to just not talk to you than to fuck up in front of you. If they give you the wrong impression of Japan or if you klutz something up, it's their responsibility to rake your chestnuts out of the fire while smiling all the way. Of course they don't want to talk to you - the treatment that Japan got after WWII means that it's a hotbed for wankers like you who want to roll over another country and exploit its cultural weaknesses and the sore spots left by occupation, propaganda and loss of national pride just to feel like you're welcome.
Stay in Korea and chew all the ttongsul-soaked club chick muff you want, gaijin smasher. You're the single worst kind of person to ever touch ground in Japan, because you flip your shit when you aren't treated as a god when you invite yourself into another country without asking anyone jack shit.
The difference between a tourismal chad like you and a normal fucking human being visiting another country is that the actual human being keeps in mind that they're entering the territory of another culture without asking any kind of permission, and that even though they're paying money to entrepreneurs, they're not paying that money to everyone they cause shame, distress or inconvenience to. The only thing you bring to the country is money that scammers and hacks will use to dilute the culture even further.

I doubt it, never heard of anyone being outright rejected. but maybe they would have caused some trouble, forced me to stay somewhere else or something, or just caused them to scold me. I think they mostly wanted someone to contact in case they needed to find me.
>>
>>1157198
Looks like copy pasta, actually surprised that it didn't end with "your dead kiddo". That post was an absolute microcosm of what I felt touching down in Japan, I've been all over Europe as I am European, I'd wing it, learn the bare minimum language I'd need for spain or whatever. I ended learning an ungodly amount of jap (still shit) just for 2 weeks. I landed in Narita in border control and I felt like I was intruding. The others in the airport from Europe were either couples or weeaboo's.
It made me feel a little sick that all the japanese knew english and most tourists (including myself) could not speak much Jap. Europe is one thing since we have been moving borders for centuries.
The one thing that alleviated this is when you approach a shop, they're forcing happiness or stern. They see me fucking up trying to speak jap, even if they introduced themselves in English they brighten up and speak 10x as much, I'm standing there confused and laughing.
It's not about being a weeaboo, It's about mutual respect, nothing annoys me more than people being ignorant.
Tldr RANT RANT RANT RANT RANT RESPECT
>>
>>1157203
Sounds reasonable enough, in fact airbnb is all about "hosting" so handing over the host's contact info is a surefire way to quench their interrogative ways. I guess it's not about a competitive perspective (hotels) after all.
>>
>>1157202
Can you offer a guarantee that you won't cheat the customer and be prepared to pay out when you fuck up?
Can you undercut other dealers on the market in speed, price, safety and ease?
I strongly doubt that you can do better than everyone else who's already out there. If there was a way to change the state of the proxy service industry - slow, unsafe, monstrously expensive, time-consuming and risky, requiring immense amounts of research and cross-checking in order to pay $30 for handling and $35 for shipping a package that's likely still going to get lost, damaged or fined another $30 in customs - someone would have done it already.
>>1157205
Christ, that's the first post I've read in ages that's agreed with me.
It's really not that hard to understand the fundamentals of tourism - you invite yourself to a country through a foreign agency without asking anyone, you cause the natives stress and embarrassment by expecting them to interact with you on your terms, you pay money that only goes into butchering the native culture so that people like you can feel like you're at home, and then you fuck off and don't do anything for the country. Especially in a country that's been taking unbelievable amounts of shit in the last century from foreign powers and foreign propaganda wearing down its culture, the absolute least you can do is try.
People nowadays have completely forgotten that the world is not their oyster. It would be completely reasonable of any country to demand for example a hand-written letter to the embassy half a year in advance, a personal meeting with a small courtesy gift and a guarantee that every member of your travel party has taken courses in the language and culture before you're allowed to go there with a guide - but people nowadays have the gall to complain when they don't get thanked for barging into another culture's backyard.

Am I correct in understanding that you think people will let themselves get cheated by you when they have other choices? If people can find better, safer and more comprehensively guaranteed services higher up on the Google results, what kind of brain tumor compels you to think that you can make it?
You're believing in the same things that every person buying on to a Ponzi scheme or another scam does. You're parroting a cheap "entrepreneur" ideology and "backing it up" by saying that an established part of financial theory is bullshit without actually providing any evidence.
I would be sad that I'm seeing the start of a spiral that's going to end up with you losing tons of money on yet another absurd business scheme, but you're so much of a preposterous asshole that I can't bring myself to care. Keep buying those airport business guides and making all those misguided investments. I wish I had a direct camera feed and some popcorn.

>Christ, that's the first post I've read in ages that's agreed with me.
Wait what? What you wrote was common sense, I forgot to say i wasn't the guy you were replying to but I think you knew that.
I find it very hard to try and differentiate myself (Sorry for the stereotype as most can be the best guys to hang out with) from Americans. I was in the Chinese quarter in London eating in a restaurant, it was quiet enough. 4 americans came in, all surrounded the waitress and saying table for 4, oh my god my feet hurt, where are we at? Are we in Leicister square. ect. Completely drowned out everyones conversations. Sat down the table behind me. Couldn't even speak to the person I was eating with. One even called his wife in Philadelphia during the meal, a voice call shouting at twice his "regular" voice, her whining in the background.
Sometimes it's not even cultural difference it's just being a thoughtful person.
>>

I would wish you'd be looking back in five years, looking at your empty bank account and hundred-thousand-dollar business loans and wishing you'd taken the advice you got from two (that's two, yes - it's amazing how quickly you default to assuming that anyone who disagrees with you is the same person) people on the Internet, but I know you're just going to blame the government, "the establishment" or some other grouping to avoid facing your own mistakes.
If there is literally anyone in this thread who thinks this guy isn't a delusional shitlord, chime in now and bandage his fragile bruised fee-fees.
>>
>>1157219
No problem. Honestly if I made it here, anyone can.

And about the problems you may have (this is not to be a pitiful shit) trust me, it all can and probably will be solved. Take it from a guy that was dumped by his 5 year gf the day of the anniversary. After 2 years of heavy depression and almost killing myself I started to "live" again, planning the trip and stuff. Now I'm without drugs and I'm fine, not as good as I would like but still good.

>>
>>1157229
Because people have the right to live in a magic hugbox bubble where no one will ever hurt their delusional ideas?
People have the right to be helped, and that also includes the right (and the obligation) to be told when they're out of fucking contact with reality. The problems with modern business and modern life in general come out of people going into their own "innovative" ideas without self-criticism or self-awareness, thinking that everyone else must be inferior to them and they can do it if they just try.
Nowadays, people can't seem to understand that the reason everyone else isn't doing what they're planning is always, always that they tried it before and it didn't work. You're not original, you're not amazing, you're not a prodigy, and if you were, your ego would get in the way as soon as you depended upon it.
>>1157231 - what compels you to think that you, with no experience or even understanding of the business, can just suddenly strike it big with an idea that other people have discarded already? Life isn't easy mode. Try working twenty years in import-export and start up your own business then, like most other people who actually become successful. Everyone sees the sensations who make it big out of the gate because the news sells well, but no one sees them when they inevitably crash and burn because they're too full of themselves to see that experience and realism is the only right way to go.
I don't know how to say it strongly enough, so I'll try my best. You *are* going to fail, you *are* going to regret it, and the whole world around you is proof. You can laugh now, but you'll inevitably try it and fail or find an excuse to not try.

>>
>>1157235
You really don't have any other reasoning capabilities than resorting to ad hominems, do you?
You were the one who asked people earlier, and now you refuse to accept your answer. Tell me, right now, how you plan to do what the whole business has discarded beforehand, if you're so eager to defend it - that means spreadsheets, budget estimates, contacts with Japanese businesses, advertising expenses and everything in between.
If you don't have that worked out already, you're still in the question phase. I can tell that you're a white male in his mid-twenties, convinced that he's an adult after taking a second-rate business degree or finishing fedora-tier "self-education", who now thinks that buzzwords and cult-tier lack of reasoning can net him what thousands of hard-working people with job experience and educations have failed to do.
There's no shame about working the register in a K-Mart until you die, because someone needs to do it.

It's actually really hard to remember to constantly speak at a different volume from what you're used to, especially if you're caught off guard by the situation. Sometimes I don't even realize it unless it's pointed out to me. I try my best now to speak more softly when out of the country, but every now and then my megaphone volume pops up. Also I learned that when I drink I have absolutely no control over my volume so I try to be in places where loud speaking is more acceptable whenever I'm getting blendered.

You'll be in a densely packed City of millions, and even as a foreigner, I really doubt you'll stick out more than some of mongoloids I've seen here.
What's to worry about?
>>
>>1157320
Speaking as a power autist who's been in Tokyo smack in the middle of summer, I can tell you that you're likely completely fucking irrational.
No one cares about you if you're not making a mess of yourself. The Japanese are used to dealing with complete gaijin smashers who actively try to antagonize people, and pointing at a picture menu isn't hard.
Tell me what you're afraid of, and I'll tell you (as a person who himself overthought his trip to Japan as much as you're doing) why you shouldn't be.
>>
I'm not interested in the JET program but I do have a question about it.

According to the website, ALTs do not need to pass a Japanese language test in order to be accepted. What happens if someone is picked who doesn't know any Japanese?

How can you teach kids english if you can't talk to them?
>>
>>1157350
>implying credentialed teachers, curriculum writers, and pedagogy specialists are actually selected for their ability to teach
you haven't seen common core, have you?

well now imagine that everything the government does, everywhere, is equally retarded.

let the horror sink in
>>
>>1157352
So anyone who doesn't know Japanese can be chosen to go to Japan and teach kids english.

I'm glad I didn't go to school with a language teacher who didn't know my language.
>>
>>1157355
that's just the thing though, anon. you DID have a language teacher that spoke english, and you STILL didn't learn hte language.

let the horror sink in a little deeper.

english teachers have trouble teaching english to students who speak english.

let the horror sink in deeper.

sometimes it takes a few years.
>>
>>1157357
Okay, man.
>>
>>1157350
>How can you teach kids english if you can't talk to them?

what is a picture? what is a gesture?
you just wave around pictures and do gestures while saying english words and they are bound to catch on to the meaning

btw ALT means ASSISTANT language teacher. you are subordinate to JTE (japanese teacher of english) who is the one who will be doing to teaching, speaking to kids in japanese, explaining the english

Sure it's a big industry, the issue is you have to be quite good at Japanese. Your customers will tend to be older (less tech savvy) and they will likely not be eager to try and speak english.

I've just started planning a 23 day trip for September 2017. I've assembled a rough outline. I would like to know if I'm making an obvious mistakes with this itinerary before I start fleshing it out. In particular, any major destinations that can be skipped, substituted, or added and if I'm spending too much or too little time anywhere.

My priorities for the trip are as follows:

1) Traditional Culture
1) Nature
2) Food
2) Meeting Locals (Platonic and Non-Platonic)
3) Science/Technology/History
3) Modern Culture (Anime, Gaming)

It will be my first solo trip. I know no Japanese at present and plan to learn over the next year with the goal of reaching at least a basic conversational level. Money is not a major constraint. Trying to keep off the beaten path as best I can.

I currently have 3 full days in Tokyo at the end of the trip as buffer that can get distributed elsewhere if useful.

If anyone has an experience viewing a rocket launch from Tanegashima or Yakushima, I would love to hear about it.

You're just the TA for the real teacher. Jet stands for Japan Exchange & Teaching Program. You're mostly there for the exchange part. Teaching is more of a "well, while you're here and since we're paying you..." type deal. Also *saying* you're there to teach helps justify the salary a bit. Or at least it did back in the day.

Are there any other viable ways to get to work in Japan as a graduate beyond something like teaching English with JET? My almost-girlfriend got called away by the embassy at the very last minute before we were about to do a Masters together, and I'm so scared that Japan will swallow her up and I'll never see her again. I figure people have done stuff for more tenuous reasons and ended up happy, so I'm ready to wade into hell if I have to to get there.

They're just not that common. There was one guy at my gym who was always in the gym when I went, no matter what day, if i went at a certain time. He was constantly squatting and doing curl. He even brought in a special strap since he was maxing out on the weights that the gym offered.

My Korean cousin in law who basically only works during the summer for his military training was bigger than that guy. Not as toned obviously, but it seems like Japanese guys just don't get big muscles usually.

How different is sake in Japan compared to the sake you get at a normal sushi place int he US? I got hot sake a couple of times at sushi places and found it not very good. Is all sake about like this, or are there vastly different ones over in Japan?

>How different is sake in Japan compared to the sake you get at a normal sushi place int he US?

Quite different. What's served in the US at most places is cheap stuff, as plebs like >>1157566 don't know any better. There are an enormous variety of sakes in Japan, with almost all of them locally produced (particular city or town), and there are quite large differences between them. I think the Hokkaido sakes are the best, but YMMV. A sake brewery tour would be a great way to see Japan.

>>1157565
I don't think the sake you get in the US is necessarily bad, just "generic" stuff. I kinda think of sake like beer - the imports are almost always the same ol' thing while the available domestic brews are often expansive with a large variety of different styles and flavors. I am not a sake aficionado but I enjoyed sampling locally brewed sake whenever I could; the tastes were pretty varied but I wouldn't say as different as a heffeweizen vs stout, there was always the underlying "sake" taste in all of them.

Theoretically, yes. All ALT positions are supposed to be like that. You might have to make some cute english themed games or whatever but it's not like you're busting your ass or are directly responsible for the students' scores or anything.

Just like any job though if the person above you decides to shove all of their work onto you, there's not much you can do about it other than just doing the work. It's not super common but it does happen.
>>
>>1157647
>>1157622
Scratch that, I'm tired. Those are Eikaiwa jobs, not ALT. Basically it's just cram school, where you can in fact do a shitty job at conveying a lesson since you'll be the only teacher in the room.

That being said, people there are easier to teach than people at public schools (which you would have to deal with as an ALT) so, y'know.

Probably yes. Hakodate and Asahidake are at opposite ends from Sapporo. Hakodate will take 5 or 6 hours round-trip by train (bus is longer) and Asahidake similar. That's a fair amount of time in a 3-day span. You'd be better off choosing one over the other, and then spending the night there.

I'm currently in Osaka and need a webcam. Could someone please tell me where to get one? Is it also possible to bring my laptop and have the staff help me install the webcam because the menus and everything are probably going to be in Japanese, aren't they?
>>
>>1157823
I'm sure you could get one at any electronic store - Yodobashi Camera, Edion, Deodeo, Yamada Denki, etc.

You can try to search for 電気屋さん on Google Maps and see what comes up closest to you.

Not sure about the installation but if they won't help you at the store, you can post screenshots here and I'll guide you through it.
>>
Great, thanks. Which of these stores is near Umeda and maybe a big branch where they a bit of English?

I haven't bought the webcam yet. The problem is that my built-in one is suddenly not recognized by my laptop anymore.
>>
>>1157825
Looks like there's a Yodobashi Camera right outside Umeda Station. It's a multi-story electronics and home appliances store, one of the biggest in the country. That'd probably be your best bet for English-speaking staff, but it's still not very likely.

It is a huge place and I would search the website beforehand to find out what floor webcams are on, but the website isn't cooperating right now. I'll keep checking, though, and let you know if I can find out.

But the Japanese word for "webcam" is essentially the same as the English, so I'm sure you could ask some of the staff there and find them easily enough.
>>
>>1157830

Yes I think I've even seen that one and I speak basic Japanese, so finding the webcams shouldn't be a problem. I'm rather worried about not getting it to work then.

Another question: Is it possible to use Skype at Internet cafes? I did some research and it seems there are those chain stores like Media Cafe Popeye and you can even stay there overnigtht, but will it be fine to just Skype there?

My dad, who has never been to Asia, just visited me and said he wants to go to Japan in May with me. I've never been to Japan either, and I'm really looking forward to it.

He wants me to put together a 7-day itinerary, and he only has 2 things he certainly wants to do there: deep sea fishing and climbing Mt Fuji.

Obviously it's very easy to find info on Mt Fuji in english, but most of the resources for deep sea fishing is either out of Tokyo (which I assume means it'll be overpriced) or run by tour guides.

Any suggestions?

I've been lurking this general for about a year now.
I'm 24, English, got a university degree.
I run my own eBay business which pays the bills, but is tremendously unfulfilling.
I still live with my parents, and have lost contact with alot of my friends. I broke up with my half asian, half english girlfriend at the start of this year after 4 years together. I was absolutely distraught (she ended things) and it left me feeling very depressed. I'm just writing this to get it out of my system.

I'm trying to change things around drastically.
I've always dreamt of living in Japan. I'm no weeaboo, it just seems to be the best place in the world. I've nearly finished my TELF certificate (yes it's a predominantly online course..) and am eager to start applying. I can't express how excited I am.

I don't ever want to come back to the UK.
This place sucks! I lived in London for a year and don't get the appeal. This post is pretty pointless, I just wanted to talk to some people. I've read alot of advice on this board and gained quite a few valuable tips. I'm teaching myself Japanese, and it's hard but i'm getting somewhere.

In short: thanks /trv/ anons.

I'm an American living permanently in Japan. It's to the point where I don't go out to eat with 90% of my gaijin friends.

SO ANON HOW ARE YOU. YOU KNOW WHAT I HATE ABOUT JAPAN? WHY ARE PEOPLE ALWAYS SO STANDOFFISH AND STRICT. I THINK THEY ARE RACIST. OOOH! CURRY!

Meanwhile I an slowly shrinking into my seat, feeling the irritation emanating from the people in the nearby tables. I'm sorry random salarymen. Of course autisto across from me is too busy shouting to notice. Why do Americans have to shout everything they say? Why do Americans have to complain constantly about this country they claim to love? If you really loved Japan, you would try to understand it, and accept its idiosyncrasies instead of braying on and on about them.
In America I grew to be racist against Mexican immigrants (despite being raised and told by all not to be) because most of them treated my country like shit. Now I see my own kind do the same thing in Japan, and am literally not offended by Japanese racism toward me. Of course you expect me to be awful, 90% of my kind are awful. I don't take offence.
Have you ever tried to look for subtle cues in behavior? Tried to anticipate people's wants and needs? Japs are shocked, sometimes even giddy, when foreigners do this, and they warm up to you super fast.

Oh sweet, I've considered going for another degree there in case I get sick of teaching Eng. Might need a map for my info: Tsukuba is airy and open, but definitely a city. Not much weeb stuff, but a lot of sciency stuff. Nice place. South side of the mountain gets more rural as you go up it, they have a thing for frogs, so you will see little frog statues everywhere. Tsuchiura is a beautiful lake city with lots of rivers and water and a good mall. North of that is very rural pretty up to Ishioka, which is a suburban generic Japanese town. To the west between the mountains and Ishioka are comfy as fuck, mostly fruit farms, hang gliding, hilly countryside. It's mostly nature outside the towns really, and the towns aren't that big, even Tsukuba. The mountains themselves are all beautiful forest. West of Tsukuba toward Yuki is mostly farmland and kind of ugly in my opinion, don't really go that way much.

Okay. Here is the deal. I have been in Japan twice but everytime quite unorthodoxly (hitchhiking for one month each and with no cellphone or much preparation).

While I am a anime fan (not full weeb though) and love Akiba I somehow don't know the "deep Akiba"

What I mean by this for example I just heard a week ago about the Mogra club.

I will be in Tokyo from 24th Sep. till 1st Oct. again (this time with 5 friends while I'll be their guide).
What other "deep weebshit" should I visit/would you recommand?

What we plan to do anime/pop-culture related:
-Oarai
-AKB48
-Owl cafe
-Another Maidcafe (recommandations?)
-General Akibatour/shopping
-Mogra

If you don't want to teach, I say go for it. Do it for a year as a trial on your Working Holiday Visa and if you love it, you can pursue long stay options. As you said yourself, you got nothing to lose. Shoot for the stars and even if you miss you'll land among the land of A N I M E.

The best time to climb Fuji is late July, early August because that is basically the only safe time to climb unless you have climbing experience.

If you start from station 5 there really aren't many crowds until the very top. When I went our group was about 25 people that got whittled down to 15 when some people quit at the very last station. At the top of the mountain there were maybe 60-80 people all together

Why are you sitting down in the first place

Go fucking do something and only use the airbnb to sleep.
>>

From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan:
>The working holiday participants are strictly prohibited from working at bars, cabarets, nightclubs, gambling establishments and other premises affecting public morals in Japan. If a participant works at such a place, he or she is deemed to violate Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act and will face deportation except where he or she is deemed to be victims of human trafficking.

So why are there so many nogs hustling bars?
>>
>>1156391
You can now use the shinkansen to hokkaido now, its much cheaper
>>
>>1158229
oh shit. well, thanks for letting me know.
is there any way around that? (any legit way)

While it's illegal to work at bars or stuff it's absolutely possible to do so. Hell, I worked and didn't even had a student visa, just tourist one.

I'm not saying it's not risky, but it's not impossible.

Either way, you have the contact, so instead of getting a job there why don't you ask the bar guy to help you find another job. He could recommend you to any other job.
>>
Wait, AirBnB is viewed as a more-than-grey area in Japan?
>>
>>1158234
the niggers aren't there on a working holiday visa lmao, they live there
>>
>>1158253
Yes, it's funny because on here I see people recommend it/use it without getting scolded by people telling them its so risky and will likely be canceled, but if you go on the reddit board for japan travel they are totally anti-airbnb.

I personally used it for my last trip and loved it, so I'm using it again for my trip in December.
As long as you are smart about it I think the risk is very low (see: don't book at places where you read the reviews and see more than 1 "this is an automatic posting because the host canceled on me a day before arriving")

>listening to Reddit
Used like 25 different air bnb with 0 issues, just do some basic due diligence and don't book strict cancellation policy places.

Eh, worst case scenario your place gets cancelled and you'll have to find a new airbnb.

Can someone describe to me the nightlife in Tokyo-- preferably the Nightclubs? I can find videos of S.Korean clubs pretty easily on youtube but nothing about Japan stuff. More importantly, how many foreigners go to that kind of shit there?
>>
>>1158357
are you 14? they have clubs like every other nation on earth, you walk through the door to go to them

I'm stressing out and not sure where else to ask. I may start my own thread for this question but thought I'd ask here first since I'm going to Japan.
But my question/problem is with the airline.

I'm flying with Hainan Air. I leave Seattle on Tuesday September 2. On there website here https://www.hainanairlines.com/US/US/CICT It says that Seattle online check-in opens 42 hours before departure.
Checking in through Hainan Air here https://www.hainanairlines.com/US/US/Check-in Gives me an Error Code:202016.

Has anyone flown with Hainan Air before and was able to check-in online?
I've googled the shit out of this and pretty much found pic related.
Why would the offer online check-in on their website if they don't?

I've tried calling their customer service and emailing them but their office is closed right now.

Kind of having a last minute crisis here. This month I get to fly on a family member's pass. I have the choice of going to either UK/Scotland or Japan. I'm interested in cities but also wanting some scenic views, peace and quiet in the country side. Would Japan have all of this? Am I dummy for flying to Tokyo with basically no itinerary or knowledge of speaking Japanese? Is Japan diverse like Europe in terms of getting around, staying in hostels, etc? I've been to Europe plenty of times but never to Asia. Help please.

Just get to the airport super early.

You have no idea how excited reading this post made me. Sounds like great fun. I'm a big fan of hiking and nature in general so this sounds just what Im looking for. I had the option to choose Waseda, but I went for tsukuba because of the price and the research opportunities and it seems like I won't regret that choice. I can always visit tokyo anyway

Is takoyaki supposed to be sloppy as fuck? The place down the road from me in osaka does a killer okonomiyaki, but I dunno, the takoyaki I had in Tokyo was nowhere near as... Batter-y?

It's been a few months so I don't remember super well but I recall it being kinda hard to pick up with the little toothpicks provided

For Tokyo/Kyoto in March/April, what's your best bet for sleeping purposes? Hostels, airbnb or meme capsule hotels? I'm not too concerned about comfort. Noise doesn't bother me too much either. I just want to be cheap.
>>
Anyone know of a good place to buy Sports jerseys in Osaka? Need a gift for my bro.
>>
>>1158392
yes, japan has all those things
>>
>>1158442
airbnb>hostels>capsule hotels
airbnb is best and cheapest
hostels are hostels
capsule hotels are soul torturing hellholes
>>
>>1158478

I'd say hostels are cheaper, marginally.
>>
>>1158490
if you're sharing a room in a hostel you might as well share it with airbnb for half the price
>>
>>1158496

True, but I have the feeling he's by himself, so the hostel would be cheaper.

But again, not much. I'd take the Airbnb any day.

I'm gonna be in Tokyo for a week. Do you guys think charging an IC card is a better option than buying one-day tickets for the Metro and Toei lines?

I like aerospace stuff too. As far as that goes, the only thing I know about is there is hang gliding and parasailing around mt tsukuba, and gliders somewhere else nearby. There is the famous tsukuba racing circuit if you like cars too.
>>
>>1158406
If you post a temporary email, I can give you some better info on tsukuba and japan as a whole. Curious to learn what university life is like myself.
