Which countries in Asia have cheap alcohol? In particular looking at SEA and East Asia.
I'm doing research on where I'd like to live and teach English for a while and I enjoy drinking but have spent most of my life living in places where it's expensive so I haven't been able to drink as much as I'd like.
I like drinking beer and rum predominantly and am not looking for Bangladeshi moonshine that will make me go blind.
South Korea has the perfect balance of being inexpensive and actually having standardized quality control.
In SEA only Cambodia has cheap beer, everywhere else it's much more expensive than in Europe.
Thailand and Laos have relatively cheap liquors.

What? a 0.5l bottle of saigon green costs like €0.50 in Vietnam. And that's in a bar, imagine if you went to a store.

Last time I went to Thailand (3 years ago) beers were cheaper than in France.

Agreed with anon above that Vietnamese beer is the cheapest in SEA. It's fairly heavily taxed in Thailand, so it's cheaper than in any Western country but still disproportionately expensive compared to, say, food--not at all uncommon for a large beer to cost twice as much as the plate of food accompanying it in a market. Local spirits (mostly made from sugarcane although they're often styled whiskies, sometimes made from rice) are very cheap, and some are palatable in a bad-hangover kind of way. Cambodian bars often have cheap drink specials. But if you're willing to drink bia hoi, so-called 'fresh beer', which resembles slightly flat draught, you can drink in VN for .25 a glass, or even less outside the big cities. It's pretty mediocre, but very, very cheap.
