In a few weeks I'll be taking a 4 day trip to Chicago with my girlfriend. What are some essential things to do/eat while there according to /trv/?

As an example of stuff we're into, some of the things we have planned so far include:
-Chinatown food tour
-Surgical Science Museum
-Barcade (undecided on location)
-Cheesie's Pub and Grub
-Obligatory Bean picture (pic related)

Any and all suggestions welcome.

I'd 100% look into the dining and night life scenes. We have tons of amazing restaurants for all different kinds of palates and bars with really unique atmospheres. I'd recommend some, but everyone has their own taste. A quick yelp search will give you a ton to look for.

I'd recommend
-Checking out the Sear's (Willis) Tower sky deck. You can also have some drinks in the signature room for a great view.
-See a game at Wrigley. Even if you don't like baseball, it's a great time.
-Visitng Navy Pier
-Taking a walk down the Magnificent Mile
-Museum of Science and Industry is always very enjoyable

Definitely essential and pretty romantic, and can be squeezed onto the tail end of any night, just ride the elevator, buy a cocktail and take some pictures (tell her the ladies bathroom view is possibly the best).
Since you might be a foodie...Might enjoy the original brownie and a drink at the lovely tiffany decorated Palmer House, as well as their tour.

It's a good central location for a walking tour afterwards, or a bite to eat at liquor license #1 german restaurant Berghoffs.

Food:
If you're going to Chicaaago, you need to get a deep dish pizza.
Look up Lou Malnati's.

And you need to get yourself a beef (a beef sandwich with that Giardiniera).
Al's is pretty good for that.

Do not fuck this up, anon. It's important!

As for stuff to do. This anon >>1107321 is on point but I want to add that the science museum is not just good but in fact unmissable. They have a WW2 German U Boat and the space centre is great with the Apollo 8 command module.

I also recommend the canal architecture tour. Put that in the unmissable category, too. It was a bit pricey but worth every penny. Our guide was brilliant as the boat goes down the river and back again. Talked for an hour or so and it flew by.

I also like the art museum. Some iconic stuff there including American Gothic. They had a Magritte expo on when I was there too - awesome.

And just in case you're a European, watch the soccer/football at The Globe.

Chinatown is OK but there are many bigger and more interesting Chinatowns. If you've been to the ones in NYC or San Fran it'll be a disappointment.

Overall, you're gonna need to fork over some coin, but you'll have a great time. It's one of the best cities in the world.

>It's one of the best cities in the world.

Except for all the shitty news reports coming out of there recently. Your post is the nicest thing I've ever heard anyone say about it.

I'm apolitical, but I don't really want to ever visit a place where being Republican or enjoying ketchup on a hotdog could get you shot.

I think you're falling for the memes a bit.

The south side is a tragic mess at the moment with an unbelievable amount of black-on-black gun violence, true so... don't go there. It's not like these guys are showing up at the loop or gold coast and randomly gunning down tourists.

As for being a Republican, yeah, it's a proudly Democrat city. But then there are lots of places in the world where they feel strongly about their politics and it won't work out well for you as an outsider going against it.

As for ketchup on a hotdog... that's just a bit of a stretch.

All those criticisms are just not things that will affect sensible tourists.

Chicago has been the biggest disappointment out of any major world city I've been to. Deep dish is great, but all the other places people rave about in this city have been almost as good as everywhere else at best. Theres a lot of places that simply should have gone out of business a decade ago that somehow thrive in this city. From other transplants I've heard its getting better, but a lot of people from here or around here seem to think that Chicago is actually a world class food destination already

OP gonna get capped

Chicago is actually pretty awesome if u live in the right area. The touristy shit can get old quick but the north side neighborhoods have a lot to offer. Lived in lakeview for 12 yrs and not really looking forward to moving back to florida.

To the anon visiting, get away at some point from the tourist spots and check out a few north side neighborhoods...perhaps old town, wicker park and wrigleyville.

aaah I was in Chicago for, like, 6 hours and it was really great. Stay downtown though; walked past a gang fight on my way to a train.

It sounds like you're just talking about food.

I recommended pizzas and beef sandwiches. This isn't fancy gourmet shit. But it is tasty as fuck and it's real Chicago food. There are still plenty of old-school diners and whatnot that are worth a visit, too. Still plenty of healthy food options and fancy upscale shit too. It's a rich city - of course they have that shit.

I honestly don't see how a visit to Chicago can be a disappointment if you aren't broke/dumb/insanely unlucky. There is genuinely awesome museums and culture and also history - the city was so significant in the development of the modern US. And then there's a great nightlife in the evening, whatever you're looking for from fancy cocktails to drunk-ass bar hopping.

Really appreciate the replies thus far. Going to give this one bump to get a few more.

If you're looking for a young to young-ish party atmosphere in the middle of a bar district, check out the youth hostel on Damen avenue in the Wicker Park area. They have private rooms and it's cheap and safe. A fantastic deck on top where you can drink beers from the Walgreens next door and look at the skyline.

If you're looking for something a bit more comfortable, you'll find that due to the competition, Chicago hotels are much more reasonable than many smaller American tourist cities where the hotels tend to price-gouge out-of-towners who want to stay centrally and in comfort (I'm looking at you, Memphis and Nashville).

Deep dish and stuffed is good, thin crust is overrated, and Italian beefs are like shitty imitation cheese steaks
