>Don't put benches thrown into the lake
The Chinese is 请勿乱扔垃圾 which is just:
请勿 - please don't
乱扔 - to litter/throw away
垃圾 - garbage

My guess is that someone had a bunch of translated phrases and read the wrong one. The translated phrase obviously had something wrong with it too, unless there's actually a lake somewhere that people throw benches into.

>And the Northern Lights in the crystal nights
came forth with a mystic gleam.
>They danced and they danced the devil-dance over the naked snow;
>And soft they rolled like a tide upshoaled with a ceaseless ebb and flow.
>They rippled green with a wondrous sheen, they fluttered out like a fan;
>They spread with a blaze of rose-pink rays never yet seen of man.
>They writhed like a brood of angry snakes, hissing and sulphur pale;
>Then swift they changed to a dragon vast, lashing a cloven tail.

So it's still there? Pic's from 2014, but I can't say I'm amazed. Also, actually stayed in one of the barely visible houses on your picture, and partycrashed a Svanetian wedding there in September last year. I can hold my alcohol rather well, but I doubt I've never been so drunk in my life, .

Pic is a few kilometers outside Mestia, on our way back from Chaladi glacier. The sudden bad weather made for awesome pictures.

I don't get to do fun things. No jealousy here. I couldn't even avoid fucking up the one cruise I was finally able to give my Dad by being well-enough prepared. One slight rain delay and we practically missed out on half of our vacation. We won't even get to do it again because his debt finally caught up to him and I can't afford a trip for two people again.

Took a shitload of food pictures, though. We finally got to enjoy the room credit our travel agent had given us with our booking at the on-board steakhouse. Lighting wasn't good for pictures but I didn't want to disturb the other diners. Decent steak with cute little mashed potato mounds. Could barely eat anything because that day I finally got to do one thing I wanted on the trip, which was snorkeling, and I overdid it and wore myself out. That and the late seating made me really tired even before finishing my salad. Tasty meal, though. I can't complain about the food itself.
>>
>>1077396
Looks yummy.

Look anon, cruises are cheap. I think you just need to keep your eyes on the ecruises.com last minute deals. Offseason, turnaround 4 or 5 days, and you got solid deals for under $100/day for the both of you. What a sad story. Might wanna look also at the road trips for little small things around your locale for fun. Groupon gets me deals all the time on Miami Beach. I invite the gang over, drink it up and enjoy the pool in the morning. Cheaper than a night at a bar somewhere. Be creative so you don't feel so sad about missed treats. It's not a safari in Africa or anything like that, but you can get away more than you think.

Thanks, anon. I think my problem is that I'm too stubborn. I got an 8 day cruise for two for like $70 /pp/day to St Thomas and the like, but I'm starting to think that deal was a fluke. My sister brought up the idea of a road trip, so we're thinking maybe Tennessee. It's just that the cruise meant something more to me than being on a boat on the ocean. It was my chance to say "here's the world, Dad. It's yours, even if only for this week." I even scheduled a jet ski rental at St. Thomas that fell through because of our issues because my dad loves jet skis.

Only complain about the steakhouse was that I was too tired to enjoy it fully, but at least they let me take my cheesecake to go. Bad thing is next day was chocolate day on the Lido Deck and the ship was bobbing pretty badly.

It's funny, though. I'm sad about what we missed, but some of the experiences I had are things I wouldn't trade for the world. I got to eat breakfast at a small hotel in St. Thomas, basking in the morning sun and gazing upon the beautiful hills, and talk to the polite people there about the culture and customs of joy and celebration. I also got to pay $10 for some cheese and crackers because the hotel's restaurant was closed and the convenience store was closer than the next nearest restaurant.

One more food pic for the road. Not that I don't have at least a few better pictures than just what was on our plates, but is there any wonder I got full quickly? The salad is just a chunk of Romaine shoved on a plate. My hand is smaller than this thing. It was all great, though. I'm starting to get hungry looking at the pics of my dad's lobster ravioli, so I'm going to bed before I do something I regret in the morning.

Is there another Pattaya? Because I did not see that at the Pattaya I went to. Just old men, young girls and a Starbucks. (Nah, surprisingly it's not that bad. I spent a christmas there, all whores in red stocking caps. It was ok. Still, didn't see anything like that. (I swear I occasionally left Boyztown.))

True story, was in probably the same place, the trinket mile at Petra, walking with my then brief travel-gf/fuckbuddy, a Russian girl I met in Dahab. Anyway she was looking at some little sand 'sculpture' in a jar, of a black camel and coloured sand. You know what I mean. So the seller is hovering nearby, but the gf asks me "what you thyink, I should buy it?" (she was collecting souvenirs for her parents/family). I thought it looked cheap and overpriced, so I said quietly and simply "nah" Then all of a sudden, this teenage hawker who had been listening in, shouts at me in English and with real angry face like "FUCK YOU, GO AWAY, SHE DECIDE, FUCK YOU, LEAVE! I HIT YOU!" (maybe he made it himself? maybe he was desperate for a sale? But it wasn't worth the 10€ equivalent). Fucking rude as hell, out of nowhere. GF buys it, and he gives me this "got ya!" look, pretty fucking ridiculous. I didn't really care, it was just clearly a cheap forgettable souvenir. That was before we had even really seen Petra, so hours later when walking back, this little fuck then shouts stuff in broken Russian and my gf says he is saying vulgar phrases, like "hey bitch, suck my penis!" "fuck me. I love you!" "I sex you!", etc. She was not thrilled, and I contemplated pummeling the guys' rag off his head if he wasn't obviously itching for a fight and surrounded by a dozen of his other teenage thugs.

Seriously, fuck Arabs.

I'm guilty of this too, but it needs to be said - resize your damned pictures. Anything above ~1500x400 is difficult to view in 1 glance. We all have cameras that shoot in upwards of 12MP, but MP means shit, it's mostly the quality of the sensor/lens that matters, not to mention conditions, technique and subject matter.

>People actually lived there once? How was it worth it to spend all that time carving houses out of rock instead of just building settlements?
They were tombs/mausoleum purposes only. Facades to house cherished dead.
Check out this PBS Nova on Petra.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88MZif4jAsw

What is most cool about Petra was an irrigation system in / out of the settlement, which powered amazing fountains and waterfalls, and actually with hidden reservoirs to handle flood level waters into giant pools and then contain them later for use. Some engineering genius stuff, but the facades are utter garbage and just gets the most photos (or maybe most tourists haven't even a clue). Anyway, enjoy the film!
>>

I've been to other places in the world where poor people make their living selling trinkets to tourists. Fine. I have seldom received the extent of hostility when you say 'no' or don't want something as a tourist as in the Arab world. Egypt and Morocco were worse, granted, and overall Jordanians were pretty chill. Regardless, it's still uncalled for. It's not like I threw his trinkets in his face or called his mother a used up whore cunt. Shouting at someone and then yelling rude sexual comments at a couple because they shrugged of your made-in-China shit? Get real.

If you're not much of a photographer, just stick with your cell phone camera. Cell phones these days take good pictures. Enough to capture your memories, what more do you need?

Don't fall into the hipster bandwagon and buy an expensive camera so you can seem like a legitimate traveler. Traveling should be about expanding the inner camera film in your mind, body, and life, not to post your filtered "OMG I'm so cool" pictures on your social media.

I would stay away from "point and shoot" cameras simply because they are only slightly better or the same as cell phone cameras. It's like carrying around a second cell phone. If you decide to go for a traveling camera, look into the Sony A3000. That's the one I bought. Cheap, EXCELLENT pictures, not bulky, and very lightweight. It's one of the best camera under $350.

And I understand about not seeing the world yet. How old are you? What's holding you back? Start locally. Go on YELP and search parks within 30 miles away from you. I have lived in the Bay Area, California all my life and only within the past few years I found out there are parks here with swimming, camping, mountain hiking, rock jumping, etc.. I didn't know about this if it weren't for YELP. After that, keep expanding your distance.

I was there in November 2014 just when tensions had risen a little bit after Israel prevented muslims from entering their holy mosque for Friday prayers. I never really saw any shit go down when I was there.

I was wearing a t-shirt in Palestine and I have a half-sleeve tattoo and got lots of comments from young guys walking past saying, "Nice tat".

Also bumped into a Palestinian-American asking why the hell I was there and asking if I need directions or help.

Service in restaurants was absolutely awesome. I guess they want all the good PR for foreigners they can get.

>never ever of myself
Me too. I show family or friends back home a few pics after a trip and they often say "Where's the one of you in front of XYZ?!?!". Why do I need a photo of me ruining some famous landmark or whatever? Eiffel Tower and Taj Mahal are the only two I have, and only because friends I was with were all taking them so I thought whatever. But generally I don't see the point. Maybe I'll kick myself when I'm 80, but I never look at such photos now. Even with landmarks, I tend not to bother unless the lighting is good or there's something additionally unique in the shot. I prefer natural landscapes, people, streetscapes, Engrish signs and the like. I also have a little tradition of taking a photo of at least one street cat or so where ever I am...

Climbed it wearing jeans, not recommended. Get decent gloves, warm shoes and gloves, walk slowly, and there's a good chance you'll make it to the summit. Start early for the summit, try to time your arrival there slightly before sunrise. Drink plenty of water.

Me, I enjoy taking pictures, and I enjoy the way that focusses my attention on this or that detail of what I am seeing, I feel like I see things I might otherwise have ignored.
>>
>>1077728
One thing I've noticed, though, looking back on pictures my folks took while traveling when I was a kid -- pictures with nobody in them are less interesting 40 years on. "I think that might be Panama, unless it's Australia."

I try to catch family and friends in some of my pictures while traveling, but as much as possible resist the urge to say "Look at the camera and say cheese" sort of stuff. But a picture of my wife at Angkor Wat that is a good picture of her, and of the temple, that's worth having.

>Does anyone know what word they *were* looking for?
'Penetrate' is another translation of the word ตำ, (pronounced tam), 'to pound/pounded'. It's part of a lot of phrases describing salad-like dishes that get pounded in a large mortar and pestle. Most famous is som tam, green papaya salad, but there are hundreds of varieties, often with seafood. Promiscuous should be 'assorted,' more or less.

I used to justify things in your way, anon.
But truth is I have never owned a good camera (except once) and most of the time my pictures are not as good as I expect them to be.

When I eventually got a good camera, once in my life, I took tons of pics with no skills. And never learnt. So basically I kept experimenting, and was crazy about that.
I was in Canada, bought my first camera and OMG it was immense and I felt like a Nat Geo dude.

But I was also extremely alone. Very very lonely. So I kept taking pictures because it was my way to share them feelings with my family. The only people I have ever cared for.

In a sense, this scared me. I went on a photography spree. I was always around with that camera. I got the best pics of my life, eventually...

...but all this anxiety to use it over and over again was slowly killing me. Why was I so obsessed with getting it right? Why was I so obsessed with showing exactly those places to my family?

This obsession grew stronger during the journey because I really wanted my family to feel the same things i felt. To see the colours the way I see... to enjoy the immersive.

So it wasn't about pictures any more. It was about me wanting them to be around. Impossible to enjoy something per se. I had to relate it to my family and to have them as my future witness.

This thing is quite scary now. Enmeshment was so hard to pull out of. Terribly hard. So for me the camera had to go for two main reasons:
1. I was into taking pictures, but never satisfied about them.
2. It became the symbol of my loneliness. I was taking pictures for others to see, not for myself to enjoy.

I was fucking lonely and I was a bad photographer.

Now I just don't take pictures because I am bad at taking them. Occasionally I still do this, but the elder I get, the less I take and the less I upload

I used to think it was just the camera taking away the feelings; but actually it was the other way around: it was my feelings that took away my camera.

Morocco, Mauritania, Sudan, Senegal are top safe-tier, semi-sketchy tier are Niger, Mali and Chad, although you can't see any cool stuff in Niger or Chad without a private guide whose job it is to keep you safe. Algeria is perfectly safe in the north, but that's not the Sahara.

Erg Chigaga is a lot less touristy and more isolated, but the sand is spread more thinly so it's hard to find stretches of dunes that look 'endless'
Of course you have the same problem in Erg Chebbi, where the dunes are only 10 miles across. Climb one and you can see the edge no matter where you are.
Morocco has the most accessible dunes, but they don't compare to elsewhere, plus they're too fucking crowded and half ruined by 4x4s.

Unrelated, last time I was at Erg Chebbi was the first time it had rained in something like 30 years.

Yeah, I go once a year usually for about 4 weeks. Don't worry, I'm jealous too. I'm 30 this year and I've only been to 16 countries. There's probably 100 people who posted photos in this thread, people living in different corners of the world. To an Australian going to NZ or Bali is just a cheap short hop over the water. But they might be envious of someone living in Norway who can fly around Europe for 10 Euros.

Pick the destinations you really want to see and travel there, I'd love to see the whole world too but life puts many limits. I think by the time I die I will have visited 90% of what I really want to see. That 10% might be the push that I need to better myself and strive for more.

>What do you guys do for a living?
Minimum wage stuff and studying. It's the social anxiety that holds me back. I have a tough time pushing against it. I do see that if I do ever travel it will definitely help with the anxiety. There was anon around here that said travelling helped him with anxiety and made him more of an open person.
>>
>>1081636
That's very true. I can definitely attest to that as well. Forcing yourself out of your comfort zone forces you to adapt - and the thing with travel is that it's temporary. It's not like you're going to college in a new place with no friends for the first time and you have to stay there. You can return any time you want.
