If they hadn't made Luna the focus of the episode, and if they hadn't used an unisex name for her crush, I wouldn't have minded it as much. Yeah, she's a lesbian, get over it. Not make a huge deal out of it as if being a lesbian is something remarkable.

I think they wanted to surprise the audience, which I can understand, but at the same time a more straightforward approach could have also worked. I wouldn't call it pandering, but if it was, I expect them to know how to at least appeal to that sparingly. Think of how little we saw of Clyde's dads when they could have easily been crammed into several episodes. I think the writers understand that it would be out of place to show Sam too much, if at all. It would raise the question about what happened to all the other Loud crushes and why we're only sharing her. People would think "oh, they're showing Sam again for brownie points" if they weren't careful with how offen we saw her. And let's be honest here: this is the biggest reaction they'll get. It's not like everyone will go throw the roof as much as they did yesterday, even if Sam comes back and they share an on-screen kiss or something. This was their big moment. It's out in the open now and there's nothing left to really do with this to insight the reaction they just did.

I don't think Loud House is on a one way trip to SU levels of pandering to people. I think everyone involved with the show just wants to make a good show and occasionally challenge the status quo at the requests on their bosses. All I know is that L is for Love was well executed for what it was. I could have been much, much worse, having it be heavy handed and preachy.
