He's already done several game updates before, so really there should already be some familiarity with the work involved.

Regardless, people started following Prequel as a WEBCOMIC that had a fairly regular update pattern. This is just another example of a creator wanting to mutate their bread and butter from X into Y rather than just leaving it as is and putting all that "creativity" towards a new project, and instead it ends up alienating or pissing off fans. I'd be perfectly fine keeping things as humble MS Paint drawings if it means actually getting a completed story arc. Save the ambitious shit for your next project, Kaz.

I'd like to! The caveat to it, I guess, is that I'd also like to have experience with those things beforehand. I'd rather spend a year and a half failing to make a half-hour update than pull a Hussie and spend five years failing to make a 2-hour game I kickstarted for 3 mil. There are lessons I'll have to learn one way or another, and I'd rather do it when the stakes are still relatively low.

I don't like the fact that this update has taken so long. At the same time, though, I know that if I foregone it in favor of regular panels, then I'd be making all of these same mistakes on some future project that is obligated to be longer and more complex than a single webcomic update. Even on things as simple as writing a type of scene you haven't done before, there's a learning curve to it, and the only reliable ways to judge your capabilities are to either do the same thing you've always done, or to learn to do as much as possible. Frankly, the latter is more fun for both of us.

The Morrowind Expansion (at least can) take place before the main story, and the Morrowind opening has you on a ship that crashes into rocks, you get captured by slavers, you fight your way through the problems in Vvardenfell and get back to the Tamrielic Mainland only to be lured down a dark alley and sacrificed to Molag Bal by Mannimarco and then need to be broken out of Coldharbor, and then deal with a bunch of bullshit politics from one of three factions.

Oh, and you do this all while your soul is missing and the world is coming to an end.

Not to be a dick, but every time I've heard an artist say "I'm going to use this non-serious attempt to practice" it has turned out poorly. That's because no matter how much you love an idea, you will burn out on it eventually.

You're already plenty talented. If you want to improve that talent, the absolute best way to go about it is to exercise it to the fullest of your ability. If you want to make a CYA because that's what you like, that's what you should do. But if you want to make a legit webcomic, you should make a legit webcomic.

The problems with webcomics and their writing is in the planning. Most webcomic authors seem to have no concept of where they want their narrative to finish, what they want to focus on, etc. Ashley Cope, from Unsounded, is one of the very few who seems to have a clear grasp on it. So my advice would be to examine your core narrative, and identify its progress, its characters, and its intended plot. Essentially make a roadmap for yourself. Then divide that into chapters, or "issues". This will help you stay consistent, and will also be a boon should you ever want to publish physical copies. Each one should be a self-contained narrative with a beginning, middle, and end.

This will ensure that you don't lose focus. It will also ensure you do not need to fly by the seat of your pants in order to make updates. You can even start working on it without uploading it, giving yourself a nice buffer for when you start up in earnest.

Planning is key in webcomics. The practice will come naturally. As I said, you're already more than qualified. But mostly, I'm being selfish here: I want to see your comic, not your CYA. Visualize, plan, execute.

It's more and more becoming obvious that a blue /co/ only works for capes, but something like /aco/ is all porn. A legit webcomic/graphic novel is indeed my dream goal that I would like to achieve one day, though I really do enjoy the interactive aspect of a CYA as well. We'll have to see which way I decide to go in the near future but for now I'm still going to work on MCS because I don't want to drop this one so early like my previous ones. But I'm happy that you would have an interest towards a legit comic and I'll promise that you will see it one day.

Kaz here again. Personally, I don't think it's good to think of it as two directions, so much as two clusters of traits that aren't really that bound together. Like, these days most people aren't making comics with the dream of a publisher picking them up and marketing it to comic aficionados, meaning the battery of traits we class as a "legic graphic novel" are kind of arbitrary. CYOA stuff too is a lot of different traits combined, none of which are inextricably tied together.

Speaking personally, the thing I like about the "Homestucky" visual style in Prequel isn't the CYOA associations or any timesaving element so much as the ability to do visual callbacks and parallels. Like, you can develop a sort of visual language of what is meant by different sprites, expressions, or visual choices (e.g. the "no redraw zoom") based on where they've been used in the story previously. That's something I enjoy, and why I stick with the style. Someone else's tastes may be different.

I think ideally the thing to aspire to is to identify all the parts of a process you dislike, remove them, and replace them with parts you do like. I'd hate to see you strongly abide by frustrating CYOA standards for the simple reason that it's "how CYOAs work", or drudge through the miserable parts of making a Legit Webcomic because everyone else does it. I'm no mindreader, but if your comics keep dying, it's very often because there's some part of the process you dislike.

It's not like there's a real spectrum between CYOA comics and traditional webcomics, aside maybe for webcomics that incorporate some form of animation in their pages. Unsounded does that, to relatively poor effect, IMHO. There's also that zombie webcomic that's kind of crappy otherwise, which does it much better. Then there's those Infinite Canvas comics, but those were never more than a fluke. 9 Planets Without Intelligent Life was probably the best of them.

But in the end a series of images that form a coherent whole is a comic. And that on the internet is a webcomic. The CYOA format itself is the most radical departure from that which I know, and that's still only true because they seem to have developed a culture that strays very far into animation. In fact, I recall having "video comics" of a popular comic when I was young, which was basically a cartoon with limited animation, so it's not all that novel an idea aside from viewers deciding, up to a point, the direction of the plot and the actions of the character.

Mostly, I see it simply as a question of style. Most people make traditional comics because it's simply the most practical way to do sequential storytelling.

I thin there are actually some very good examples of it being a spectrum. The most obvious one are things like post-Act3 Homestuck that use a CYOA format despite not having user interaction, and the rarer inverse of that (things drawn in a traditional comic format using user interaction).

Visual novels are also something that should probably be considered a place on that spectrum. They're visual storytelling as much as most text-and-images comics are, and it's completely possible to break them up into smaller chunks and put them online. Kid Radd (an amazing artifact of old webcomicry) was a pretty good example of something straddling the divide between comic and VN, updating daily with sequences of images and text that you progressed with clicks. Very complex gif animations, too!

Perhaps my favorite example, though, is the old Mata Nui Online game made to promote the Lego Bionicle stuff. Over 15 years old now, it was essentially an adventure game that updated like a webcomic, with "updates" being things like a lava flow cooling so you could cross, or a new character showing up in a town. I guess it was kind of like an MMORPG, continually adding new quests, but like a webcomic it started with very little content, updated on a schedule, and had a concrete story arc and ending. To my knowledge, nobody has used this model since.

I'm not fond of the Scott McCloud school of thought where people try things solely for the sake of being innovative, but I think a lot of creators have some elements they enjoy working with more than others, and don't recognize how much variety there is in what they can create. You can combine all the exact elements you enjoy working with, and remove all the ones that cause you to give up.
