Can someone explain OCs based on existing properties to me? Where's the appeal? It's lazy, and boxes you into a creative corner. I've always figured that a Pokemon species' colors could consist of varying shades of the basic one.

Basically, take Espeon. Espeon's colors are a light purple, but it's not too weird to see maybe some lighter purple or darker purple. Maybe a slight pinkish or blueish shade. As long as it is still within the realms of the Pokemon's appearance and coloring. Genetics, recessive traits, and lots of other factors could easily be at hand here.

Of course, the existence of shiny/alt color versions muddies the water some. Let's also not forget the fact that 'Regional Variants' are indeed a thing. You could very well make an OC Pokemon that's a regional variant that came about due to various existing factors.
