For something considerably weaker than HBG, how does a LBG user go totting along when progressing through the game anyway? Do you piece together elemental sets for almost everything and take the appropriate shot type for each hunt, or is it better to simply go Normal, Pierce, or a mix of the two?

Unless you're a strong gunner and can utilize Brave HBG really well (which obviously doesn't apply to you), LBG and HBG deal similar damage.

HBG gets a 1.12x raw boost on their raw shots. They also get Gunpowder Infusion in Gen/XX and Crouching Fire.
LBG get (usually) superior statted guns with better reload/recoil. LBG also get Rapid Fire, which has made them traditionally superior elemental guns. Full House III is amazing.

Given how much easier LBG is to use than HBG, a new gunner will probably get better results with LBG anyway.

Always.
Doesn't matter if it's Elemental or not, you chose the right shot type for the monster before you even set out on the quest.
Virtually every Elemental LBG is also a solid Normal or Pierce gun as a back up btw. Don't worry about running out of ammo, you'll have PLENTY to finish the hunt.

My personal recommendation in Gen is to make the Mizutsune LBG and the Gold/Silver LBG, they're incredibly versatile.

No. It IS worth crafting a gun for each element though.
Elemental LBG is at its peak in late low rank / early mid high rank. You'll want at least a Water, Thunder and Fire RF gun. Ice doesn't have terribly many good targets for RF in Fourth gen (or really in general since almost every monster that's weak to Ice is weaker to raw), and Dragon is an oddball.

For armour sets, just make a generic gunner set with Attack Up and Evasion. That'll last you until G rank.

Feels amazing for the two minutes you can actually fire the gun for, then it feels like shit. A shame, because Dazzling S looks amazing and shoots like a charm.

At a glance, they're just generic Elemental LBGs for the most part.
You'll want to rush to tick as many boxes as possible with Ele RF LBG's. Ludroth can be made before you fight Tetsucabra, and water will probably give you the most mileage out of the shots. Khezu looks like the earliest Thunder S gun. I recall Rathalos being my first Fire LBG, but there *could* be one that is craftable sooner.
The Barioth LBG is IIRC the best Pierce gun you have access to at the point where you can make it, out of both LBGs and HBGs. It'll be your bread-and-butter Pierce gun until you can get to G rank, more likely than not.

...Since this is 4U it'd be remiss of you to skip over crafting Bite Blaster, the Najarala HBG. Up until mid-G rank, the Najarala HBG is exceptional in every regard, boasting high raw, slots, good recoil, good reload speed and a multitude of good shots to fire as well as useful Crouching Fire options. Also, if you're going to be getting hit ~four or more times a minute with the HBG, I recommend using the shield attachment. Ideally you'd be running and gunning like a pro and not need it, but it's better for your DPS to block a hit poorly and continue firing than it is to roll around on the floor drinking potions. Just don't get too used to it, it could lead to a bad habit.

The Tetsucabra HBG and Nerscylla HBG are your earliest access to Pierce HBG. Both are decidedly mediocre, but a strong Pierce gun is something that you'd really like to have in your repertoire.

Monster Hunter has a low or mid-fantasy setting with a little bit of Nickelodeon science on shit like reloading axes that transform into swords. On the hunter's side of things it's a bit more lighthearted, hunters (or at least the players) never seem to truly die even if you get swallowed whole. You just get kicked back to the base camp or fail the quest and yet live another day.

Unfortunately, there isn't really much lore backing up the games despite having a pretty great setting.

The best conversation I've ever had about the Dragon War was on the previous iteration of this thread. And I've gotten better advice about monsters I had trouble with here. I had trouble with the tight slash damage hitbox of MHFU's Khezus (the head, just between wings impervious to slashing at low rank) and they recommended me lances, and it just worked.

The dodges are great once you get used to it. SnS has weak attacks too and it happens to be my most used hunter weapon so maybe that is why I don't mind that.

Cats are perfectly viable for clearing every piece of content in the game. I don't see why someone should care about what is "objectively better" in a PVE game as long as they can clear the content with what ever it is they happen to have the most fun with.

Cats aren't anywhere near the "top tier" but they are decent and that's all they need to be.

Why does element keep getting shafted on most weapons? You should be rewarded for specializing your weapon and armor for a fight yet on most weapon types you can just have one for everything.
There should be certain element resistant monsters where raw is better, but most should have element perform best with most weapons.
Additionally, to keep the significance of faster weapons being better with element, the weaker a monster is to an element the more weapons will be best to use with element like a scale. DB will use element on near everything while GS would use raw in most cases.

An easy way to kickstart this would be bringing back Ele Atk +3 and match raw and element sharpness modifier.
What does red /mhg/ think of element and its current state?

Well, it still works for DB. Apparently Elemental Crit is actually worth a shit for once in MHXX, but that's probably because the game is absolutely retarded with affinity and CritBoost.

That aside, going by things like Gravios it sounds like some elemental hitzones in general would need to get raised a bit. Since SA is pretty much fucked for phial variety, Power Phial needs a significant nerf so everything else looks more attractive, and Elemental Phial CB could be interesting if you give it one extra phial by default over Impact.

Now Poison on the other hand is pretty shitty. Blast at least can help stagger and does instant damage per proc, Poison has few niche uses when you'd take a Thunder or Dragon weapon to those it has some notable effect on anyway.
