The problem with Patreon is that you're just giving the artist money just because without any expected return.

Some are even fully aware of that and liken having a patreon for being emancipated just for the ability to pull shit like commission raffles behind a paywall so they can take your money without having to draw your ideas.

I get that commissions aren't necessarily steady income for most artists like Witchking and shit, but some of us are just "sometimes" clients that can commission once in a blue moon and fuck off. Patreon is just adding red tape on top of that.

Every day that Patreon makes money for someone, it further cements the idea that it's a viable way of making a living.
This is what our society has become.
People constantly throwing microtransactions at each other. Most likely normalized by the gaming industry with their DLC bullshit.

Now if you could actually charge a proper price for commissions, I'm sure Patreon wouldn't be nearly as big as it is also YCH's wouldn't be a thing.
But since charging anywhere near 300-400$ for a commission is frowned upon like crazy and only seems to be possible for the top 5% to pull off.
So artists must make that money from somewhere else if they want to make a living from art, like YCH's which routinely hit those kinds of numbers, even if the quality of the art is the same or inferior to commissions.
Fandom itself has partly created this problem of forcing artist away from commissions.
I know I'm going to move the fuck away from them and switch to YCH as soon as possible and eventually Patreon, minimizing the amount I draw commissions.
Commissioning takes longer, pays less and too many people seem to go "friendmode" during the interaction.
The more I can distance myself from people and to just give them the product, the better.
Also there won't be any god damn haggling or griping about prices.

An artist is not a store with a sign "selling sandwiches". Illustrators do that, because they are selling their services. And even then, it's just for reputation purposes in regard to the topic they focus on. They still do other stuff, and on their own fucking gallery people should expect them to draw not only comics for children.
