At the end of the episode On the Run, a loud banging noise is heard after Steven and the gems leave the Kindergarten.
I don't know if this was truly the intention, but I have always interpreted this as the gem monsters trying to get out, quite creepy.

In too many birthdays we find out that a gem's perceived age is decided by how old they feel.
That's why Amethyst switches from looking and acting more child-like to looking and acting more like a teenager. Pearl looks a lot younger in flashbacks, like a teenager too, but post-Rose death she looks and acts way older.
Rubies look like and act like brats while Sapphires look and act older.
Rose looks like a mother in the 30s.
I could go on and on but basically, gems physical appearing age changes based on their mental maturity.

On the subject of why Lapis' cracked gem was kept in the mirror and Rose possibly did nothing to heal her- I have a theory on this. We know that gems can be used to make unsentient objects sentient, we saw this with Frybo. Whereas Frybo wasn't destroyed upon removing the gem shards, Lapis' mirror was immediately destroyed. So I think that on Homeworld, there exist gems whose sole purpose is to be used on objects, these particular gems don't have consciousness similar to "normal" gems.
Lapis was being held in Pearl's forehead, she wasn't even bubbled. We also know Pearl likes to collect interesting/important objects.

The general consensus is that S5 might be the last, but there's also a lot of signs pointing to a sixth season too (everyone still recording at the time S4 is wrapping up etc.)

Personally I hope we get renewed for two more seasons after S5 since they seem to come in pairs. That'd be more than enough time to solve the mysteries left in the show, heal the corrupted gems, flesh out characters like Jasper, Lapis etc. and put an end to the conflict without stretching things out too much.

See here's the thing about that. Its notoriously difficult to find the exact production budget of a television show, but SU is rumored to be CN's most expensive show with production costs comparable to a primetime network television cartoon like Family Guy or The Simpsons. And like I've said before, it doesn't fit the economic model its been forced into. Successful cable television cartoons are largely episodic toy commercials. That's why shows like AT and SU can have massive fanbases and solid ratings and still get cancelled once their profit projections stagnate and they can't justify their budget, while crap like Ben 10 and Teen Titans can never really die and will probably outlive me. Those shows aren't shows, they're highly lucrative studio properties. It sounds cynical and overly obvious to say that the are commercials, but that is exactly what they are. Long form advertisements that people enjoy enough to voluntarily watch. Not to mention something like TTG is probably receiving substantial monetary support from DC comics who have a based interest in seeing it air as much and as often as possible. Ben 10 probably has a similar benefactor, Hasbro or something probably, I can't be bothered to look up who manufactures their toys.

The fact that SU even exists on CN is something of a small miracle. The fat that it gets the budget it does is a large one. The fact that it even made it to season five without having friendship is magic (toy commercial obvs btw) cultural impact and audience awareness is another miracle. SU is a show that the suits at CN look at and go "wtf are we doing this for?" I would bet my shirt that it's some executive's pet project, or that Tiny Jackie is blowing Mr. Time Warner himself.
