I made this a few months ago in regards to 3DS MH titles, intended to be from a neutral viewpoint.

Though generally speaking, while the newest game is the one you might as well be playing since it's that kind of series, personally I would still think MH4U is the better game to open up with. That said, take the information in the infographic as you will and let it help you decide.

Outside of the 3DS you've got either Freedom Unite or Portable 3rd. The former is one of the hardest and the latter is one of the easiest.

Stuff like online etiquette or mechanical details? You'll probably learn it as you go or read threads, but other websites can help you in this regard if unsure.

Playing MonHun sometimes triggers in me the vague memory of a story (I believe it was a vidya, but it might be an anime or something else) centered around fighting monsters and it turns out that those who fought the monsters might turn into them.

Anyone have an idea of what is that ill-remembered story?

Sounds like something that multiple stories have, this might be a bit more recent than you're thinking but was it Soul Sacrifice on the Vita? The sorcerers in the setting go after monsters, who are effectively people and animals corrupted by their wishes granted by a chalice, defeating them restores their form and at the mercy of the sorcerers. Sacrificing them is practically absorbing their essence, and Avalon (the faction the author belonged to in the story) generally didn't want any of them spared.

One of the side stories is centered around a former top Avalon assassin that went after sorcerers turned monster, and he ended up becoming a monster himself. He was spared by the leader of the more forgiving Sanctuarium and joined them, the event completely changing his perspective.

I'm thinking the story predates the Vita, and scouring Tvtrope's "Was once a man" and "And then John was a zombie" didn't give any result.

Maybe it was due to me flipping my shit as a kid when I started playing Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, but I remeber the story involved killing monsters, unlike Pokemon.

Action game like MH in that you kill bosses, but 99% of maps are just arenas. You take up to six sorceries before starting a mission, each of them having a limited amount of uses that you have to refill via small monsters or one-off complete refills in the map. A sorcery can be something like a temporary elemental weapon, healing spells, utility ones like raising pillars to fight on high ground or locking down archfiends with a stasis field, or using health to attack instead of being unable to break. The sacrifice part of the game is emphasized in that you can have super attacks that gimp you afterwards in some capacity, but after the fight it's entirely possible to retcon the semi-permanent penalties. Breaking body parts for a chance at different sorceries and saving/sacrificing for monster-specific LE/SE are where the RNG is at.

I wouldn't say the gameplay is overall great or anything, but it's not bad at all as its own thing and the Delta re-release made it a much better package. With everything done through a living grimoire, a key component of the game is that it's heavily story-driven, I found the main and side-stories pretty good. The lore is pretty cool too as it corrupts folklore and fairytales to compile the roster and setting, though the Chtonian/Abyssal Fiends from Toukiden and a dragon from God Eater also make up some crossover content.

At this stage it's one of the few real Vita exclusives left, too bad a PS4 port isn't planned.

It's not really that common.
It just started with that artist you're posting making 2 or 3 images, then some people loved those pictures and would post them in /mhg/ which prompted a couple of writefags to do two pieces on it, which latter prompted a few pieces of it being drawn to one of those drawfags who's enamored by the concept.
