Best advice I can give is to keep things simple.
Thats not to say achieving that is quite as easy as saying it, since it requires some self restrain.
Too much simplicity can make a character look kind of boring.
If it's supposed to have a theme it fits with best, make that clear and a part of the character.

For colors I try to keep a minimum of 2 on a character's body, if there is a 3rd it will probably be based off the previous ones so it wouldn't stick out or anything. The ones you mentioned aren't inherently bad, it's just that one is going to have to be the focus while the others are highlights.
