hmmm im not sure on the british drama part, but if your saying like will it be a soap opera in space then yes that is what they have been promoting at least to their investors and stuff it seems. The idea is to make it like TNG with crew affairs but get rid of all the scifi and exploration.

Jadzia was very, very boring. And I hated her little half ass smile smirk thing she did. She was awful.

The only time I enjoyed seeing her on screen is on the episode where her and Worf get married and Martok's wife put her through some trail where she had to hold something heavy out at her sides. Her chest, underarms, and armpits were right there in full view.

The only time I wasn't bored to death by her or hating her stupid smirk.

The problem with Trek games is that they usually focus on the autistic, superficial elements of Trek, like the ships and technology, or "cool aliens".

But Trek is a show about people. It's character-driven and all of its points and issues are informed by the characters, their nature, and their decisions. This is what makes Trek resonate with its audience. And it seems there are a lot of people who just don't get it. They boil the entire show down to the Captain and the ship.

A good example would be Bridge Commander. I used to think it was pretty good. I recently tried to replay it, and not only are the controls ass-backwards and the game put together poorly, but the presentation is completely off. The characters are flat and lifeless, with very trite character traits such as the new First Office who doesn't really trust you, and Patrick Stewart very obviously phoned in his tutorial voice lines.

The ideal Trek game would be an RPG. The best Trek games have been shooters, and that's because even when you're just shooting people in the face, at least you're sort of directly communicating with them. Elite Force 2 has a great bit where you question a Ferengi by quoting the right rules of acquisition at him.

Honestly, I'd want something like the first Mass Effect with a bit of extra polish poured into a Trek suit. And the cinematography, writing, and presentation of the Witcher 3 is also great at setting the stage, which would be beneficial for a Trek game.

Ultimately what makes a good Trek game is in the "soft" sciences of writing, art direction, etc. Not in the autistically rattling off of number of torpedo tubes and phaser banks on some make-belief ship that, in the show, could just do literally anything the writers wanted it to do.

And If it's going to take after Mass Effect anyway, I'd want to fuck the space cat, too.

Being "progressive" isn't really being progressive anymore. TOS questioned the status quo in the 60's. But repeating the same message verbatim today is really a form of conservatism. This is why I loathe all the comments that refuse to engage in this criticism by referring back half a fucking century. I like Trek because it was forward-thinking and dared to ask interesting questions, and make points that others weren't willing to make. Star Trek was always on the cutting edge.

And I certainly won't reject a gay Trek character, but neither do I subscribe to the idea that Trek is done when you just put enough liberal (that is, socialist) politics in there. Because Trek isn't about political soapboxing, it's about exploration of the human condition. At least, when it's done right. There are some clunkers, and sometimes they just do a humour episode. But when they had the first interracial kiss, they were poking at the establishment. Now, when they do that and declare themselves just as rebellious as the original Trek, they are supporting the establishment.

And honestly, I'm just waiting until they discover that Klingons are all brown, worship a warrior-prophet, have a system of external honour, and long to die in battle, making them perfect Muslim analogues, at which point they'll be subtly changed to avoid offending people, rather than using them to make good points.

There was one episode of Voyager -a Neelix episode, even- that is a good example of what makes a modern Trek episode edgy: They pick up a bunch of prisoners and their guards, and Neelix discovers this empire imprisons one race in disproportionate numbers. He befriends one, buys his story, and tries to appeal his sentence in his stead. Then there's a prison break, and the prisoner turns out to be a piece of shit and takes Neelix hostage. It doesn't present anyone's ideology as the perfect solution. It's up to the viewer to interpret things.

People hate Ezri because she's the exact opposite of Jadzia, which was done completely intentionally. Ezri never asked for that shit, and has trouble adjusting. Jadzia and Ezri are both analogues for people who transition from one phase to the next. Jadzia has already made that transition, Ezri is still going through it.

The only problem with Ezri is that they put too much focus on the character in the last (and her only) season.

That's oldschool stage fighting. Go look at any movie from the same era, and you see that same style of fighting. Especially Westerns, with everyone tumbling into easily breakable tables and shit. When they did Trials and Tribble-ations, the cast had to learn how to do oldschool stage fighting to fit in with the scenes.

Easily one of the best episodes ever, BTW. Never fails to put a smile on my face.

Not that the patented double axe handle move looks any better, though. And I do kind of miss Kirk literally throwing himself at opponents as a legit fighting move. In one episode, I swear he bowls over three guys at once.

I only half agree with your opinion. Sure ST:TNG is all about exploration of what make us human in the middle of futuristic setting and alien races. But your complain about "it boil down to just about the captain and the ship" have a damn good reason why.

Watch any episode and the show always started with recording of captain's log and a view of the ship or the bridge. So most people assume that this show is just that. Also the fact that in a ship with over 1000 crew members most scenes are mostly in the bridge, followed by meeting room, holodeck, transporter and private rooms the show felt claustrophobic.

To make TNG a better series it will be better to switch focus sometimes. Why not focus on the engineering team? Or a story about a team of redshirts beamed down into a unknown planet? Or a crew escorting an ambassador throughout the ship? Or daily life of O'brien? Or a a full one hour episode of Deanna Troi trying different kind of lingeries......

This episode is probably the root of DS9, and a very, very good episode, in my opinion. It's a rare joy to see Stewart and Alaimo's characters collide like this.

As for the crew escorting ambassadors, it happens a lot. The Troi episode mentioned above is in fact one of them. There's the one where Wesley is the escort, and wants to bone the ambassador, because she's a cute girl. And there's the one where they find Scotty in an old ship's transporter buffer, and show him around the Enterprise D. And the one where Ferengi hatch the hot babe egg, and Picard yet again winds up almost boning a woman half his age. The TNG crew does a lot of shit with ambassadors, really.
