You know, it really bites my ass that technology and budgets have finally advanced enough to make this sort of thing possible on the regular in a live action series, while Dr. Who and Skyrim have made cat people sort of acceptable again, but that the entire science fiction scene has gotten so damn edgy and anti-Trek that we're never going to see another decent Trek or Trek-like show where we can actually do this sort of thing.

The rumours I've heard about the new Trek show are fucking insane, too. I already had very low expectations, but if this is all true, it's basically not going to be Trek. It's just going to be another random-ass science fiction show with shit it thinks is smart, but is actually retarded. Like Enterprise.

I also hate how a lot of people who think they're interested in Trek are operating on hearsay about TOS, or are the lowest common denominator. Proper Trek has always had a philosophical core, and a positive, optimistic basis. Even the "dark" DS9 was about those values being tested and remaining true to them. I loathe to see it all reduced to pew pew lasers and lol transporters.

A new M'Ress would fit perfectly into the Trek ideal of agitating against conventional (beauty) standards. But that's exactly why we're not going to get one. And, entirely unrelated, she would make my dick hard.

Star Trekkin across the universe...

So I was thinking about this discovery NASA made the other week, finding those potentially earthlike planets orbiting Trappist-1, a sub red dwarf star that is only 7% the size of the sun. Considering red dwarf stars and their ilk are so vastly more numerous than (relatively) large stars like the sun and can have earthlike planets does that mean the vast majority of intelligent life in space are on planets orbiting such stars?

In the report they mentioned that from Trappist-1b or c (which are the two potentially earthlike planets) Trappist-1 would be only slightly brighter than a full moon, the planet being shrouded in a perpetual dusk. I have to wonder is that the kind of sky that most aliens live under?

>I am the gatekeeper of what constitutes a True Fan and what not
>even if that means one of the original actors doesn't get a say in the show about an issue he has personal experience with, because it goes against my personal beliefs, which are universal to the entire show

Nigger, if you'd paid some attention to Trek, you'd have noticed there are tons of different viewpoints on every situation. Contrary to what some people believe "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" doesn't mean "more brown people", it means that there's no one truth.

The point the other Anon is trying to make is that these people aren't actually being very progressive. You don't get points for going with the prevailing wind. If TOS had done that, the entire crew would have been white Americans, and the show would have been forgotten after its cancellation.

And guess what? The progressive nature of Trek isn't served with mere representation. Some of the more obvious characters who explore interesting minority traits aren't presented as that minority. Data isn't an autist, he's a man who feels no emotion. Worf isn't an islamic immigrant, he's a guy with roots in a prophet-worshipping, religious warrior culture. Jadzia Dax isn't transgender, she's a woman who has lived a past life as a man. For many of the characters that work that way the writers never even intended to peg one, specific group. They just explored the philosophical underpinnings, and ended up commenting on a group of people with those traits, who we can peg as "autists" or "immigrants" or "transgenders".

So yeah, if they just add their gay, trans, brown character(s) they might be serving representation. But if they don't add a cat woman who challenges beauty standards abour hairy women, or whatever, they are still shying away from the core of Trek. And shooting down anyone who even tries to point out that playing it safe isn't Trek, isn't a lot like Trek.

Disney nixed the entire Extended Universe because they need that room to make their awful movies in.

I'm not even a Star Wars fan, and the EU sounded retarded most of the time, but I can understand how that pisses people off. I saw The Force Awakens on Netflix, and it's basically JJTrek: Star Wars. Figures, given that it's literally JJ Abrams who directed it. Just your standard, safe, reference-dropping generic movie product.

the real problem with force awakens was just how derivative of a new hope it was, its literally the exact same fucking movie. Unlike most people I don't hate remakes, but they have to do something new with the idea. Force Awakens was just so incredibly dull in that regard and it really pissed me off.
>>
>>8089403
plus Rey was a mary sue, everything she did was nearly perfect.
>>
>>8089403
>derivative of a new hope
Wrong, it's the entire Original Trilogy shoehorned and compressed to shit to fit the 2 hour runtime, I don't care how anyone justifies it or defends it, the mere existence of any other Star Wars movie besides the OT, Prequels if you wanna push that far, is unnaceptable.

At least the Prequels only ruined certain subtle aspects of the OT, and it was still its own thing in many levels, Force Awakens and Rogue One are terrible fanfiction and it just lessens the original Star Wars, Empire and Jedi as capeshit movie for the ''lol I'm so nerdy xd'' crowd, you know, the same crowd who likes the Special Editions because some scenes look better than originally

>the same crowd who likes the Special Editions because some scenes look better than originally

>>8089731
that didn't bother me as much, mainly because I was imagining the story trajectory of the next 2 films having her turn to the dark side and its up to CRAWLING IN MY SKIN to turn good and take her down. But just going from the trailer to the force awakens I thought the story was going to be about two ex stormtroopers (who turned out to be evil dude and FN) trying to find purpose after the fall of the empire, with evil dude mistakenly thinking he was continuing Vader's mission and the black dude leading a new alliance against him. I'm sure you can imagine my disappointment when what we got was literally the exact same story we've already seen while trying to cram in as many old characters as possible whether it suits the plot or not.
>>
>>8089403
I don't hate remakes. I hate "reboots". It's a subtle difference, but there are plenty of remakes. The word tends to imply at least some care going into the product.

The term "reboot" was coined specifically for this sort of thing. Usually it means that they're tossing the pre-established logic out the window in order to do their own thing. The reboot starts over completely, while the remake still follows the original.

At least, that's my take on it.
>>
>>8090338
idk, personally I think they're interchangeable. So to rephrase I don't have a problem with reboots as long as they take the idea from the original in a new direction.

Like take the robocop remake/reboot from 2014, a lot of people hated it and I must admit that its not as good as the original, but I really did like how they took it in a different direction and tried to make it more topical. If they had just made it about 80s boardroom sharks it wouldn't have felt contemporary at all. The OCP in the new robocop would never shoot a junior executive in the board room, think about how fast that would spread on social media. Instead of being about corporate politics of the 80s, it was about drone warfare. Its just a shame the movie dedicated far too much of its runtime to robocop's construction in China and not enough to him actually taking down bad guys, also the ending was pretty awful.

Still though, even if it didn't exactly work I much prefer a film like that to Force Awakens.

I couldn't disagree more. If they want to take it into a new direction... make a new movie. The entire reboot idea is for wanting to make the next cookie cutter box office bomb, but to add a well known name in order to get it some extra staying power.

I get this feeling a lot of people want to cut the reboot thing slack. I don't know. RoboCop had tons of shitty sequels, and no-one ever cut them any slack. So why should I cut the new RoboCop any slack? I didn't like it. The original was rather unique in its own right, and its direct sequel didn't get it, either.

But maybe that's just the thing. It's like in the past, you could get a movie like RoboCop, and it's an ultraviolent, satirical take on American society. But also a household blockbuster movie. And now, it's either/or. Both types of movie still exist, but the RoboCop reboot is a PG-13 mess with a weak, in vogue "message" about drones being shit.

It's like we've got things ass backwards. What I want to see is good products breaking out because they are good, and getting fame because of that. What we have now is a planned product, complete with a brand name, where people try to predict how much it will make. In effect the market has become insanely risk averse.
>>
>>8090756
well I've talked to a lot of people about these movies irl and online, and personally I've never heard anyone espouse an opinion like that, have you?
>>
>>8090819
Not him, but I've heard similar talk about JJTrek and Enterprise. They're the people who watched Star Trek for the base appeal. You know, entertaining characters, space fights, that sort of thing. So you give them a good looking movie with halfway decent writing, and it kinda fits the mould of the original, and they're like "this is OK". And then they go on with their day. Because they're not autists who want to jack off to space cats.

But if you're an autist like me, you can articulate exactly why you think Trek is good, and why that shit isn't Trek.
>>
>>8090819
I went to /co/ to see the Trump meltdown, and for some reason this one thread started talking about the Star Wars Special Editions and how ''they're necessary to make the film watchable for modern audiences'', also among various friends who would rather the Special Edition instead of the original, probably because at the time the only version we could get of the original was the shitty Laserdisc rip.
>>
>>8090812

>>
>>8091275
>Are you Red Letter Media?
Afraid not, I don't follow them, is that what they reviewed this week?

I'm not normally big into horror movies but I'd heard that Get Out was supposed to be pretty good. Personally I thought it was alright, but everything about it just felt a bit forced to me especially the left turn when it turns out not only that visiting his gf's house was a man trap, but that his gf is in on it. When they do that reveal they have her change her demeanor and put her hair up in a ponytail, I thought it was a minor detail but it annoyed me. She has her hair up and is acting coldly now, that's how you know SHE'S EEEEEVIL. The climax was pretty enjoyable, but it felt like it took its time a bit too much to get there. And the family has discovered on command hypnosis induced anesthesia, and a fucking brain transplant, yet don't share those discoveries with the rest of the medical and psychiatric communities? The brain transplant would literally be the biggest medical discovery since penicillin. But we're not going to patent that procedure and make billions, instead we're going to have my daughter honey pot random black guys so I can auction their bodies off to my creepy friends.

I also was expecting it to be funnier considering the director, the comic relief friend definitely was a highlight of the film but unfortunately he has very little screentime.

As for Logan I was told it was a neo-noir and I guess it sort of was, and it was certainly bloody but I felt the plot was much too fragile, if you squeeze it a little it breaks apart. So much shit that makes literally 0 sense is happening and you're supposed to just accept it. Wolverine (and little girl wolverine) kill probably around 100 meathead mercenaries sent after them by Evil inc. with absolutely no repercussions whatsoever. And Evil inc. is happy to just continue sending wave after wave of meatheads with machine guns to die like the rest. (cont)
>>
Eventually they get the bright idea to send in evil wolverine to fight old wolverine (aka wolverine) and it was not nearly as cool as they thought it was going to be I'm sure. Hugh Jackman is fun but he can't carry this picture on his own. Patrick Stewart dies about 2/3 of the way through and you very definitely notice his absence. The little kid had absolutely no charisma whatsoever (she was raised by evil inc. in sensory deprivation to be a supersoldier so she has autism or something) which doesn't make things very fun.

It was the same problem I had with Apocalypse, all this shit keeps happening that makes no sense and everyone just goes with it like its normal. Remember in Apocalypse when the mansion blows up and then the military shows up and uses some kind of mass make everyone faint gun (tm) and then abducts all the mutants. You know, because the military's evil, everyone know's that GOD. The military just does whatever they want and abducts random people for no reason to take them to secret evil prison. Does this shit happen a lot in comics or something?

Anyway I wasn't that impressed with Logan, but whatever. Going to a screening of The 5th Element later, and I'll probably go see Headshot tomorrow. Hopefully those are better.

Well, I can't comment too much on Get Out, because I literally only saw that Red Letter Media review. I used to be into Key & Peele, so when I heard it was by Peele, I kind of perked up. But with mixed attention, because the reason I stopped liking them is because I thought they were slipping from clever humour into easy shit. Especially with the racial humour. I mean, there's this big, expensive sketch where alien doppelgangers are attacking Earth, and they check whether people are actually people with typical "lol white people don't trust black people" stuff. Like, white girl runs out and they're like "would you date me?" and she's like "ew no", OK here's a gun shoot some aliens. And that three times in a row.

I read an interview with him about the movie, and what I heard... sounds like it had potential, but it's basically entirely aimed at micro aggression tier racism from liberals who think they aren't racist. Maybe if I knew the guy doing it wasn't the same guy behind said sketch. Because this sounds like Black Dynamite levels of racial humour, and at least Black Dynamite was aware of what it was doing. Plus, I'm a third party looking in on this from across the ocean, so I'm supposed to identify with a cultural situation I'm not really familiar with. And I'm white, and liberal. So am I then paying money to be called racist for an hour and a half?

At least for something like Get Out I have a better time accepting unrealistic shit than with something like Logan. In Get Out, Peele has all but admitted that it's a metaphor. He said "black people don't like the idea of someone getting in their head".

Honestly, you know what Logan kind of sounds like? Dark Angel. That Jessica Alba series that takes place in post-apocalyptic Seattle. I was unreasonably fond of that series. Of course, it's about genetically enhanced supersoldier escapees who were enhanced with animal DNA, so I guess I would. It was cancelled to give the timeslot to Firefly.
>>
>>8092017
Well I can't speak to what the people who made it actually thought, but I felt Get Out didn't really beat you over the head with any racial stuff. I mean sure its about a black guy dating a white girl, and it turns out to be about a group of freaky white people who want to use some kind of super science to get young virile black bodies (at the expense of their current occupants) but I didn't really feel like it was trying to say much about race relations in general. It's just a dumb horror movie, you know? As an america sensitive to this sort of stuff I didn't really find it odious in that regard.

>dark angel

I'll have to check that out. I have an entirely unreasonable love for oldschool B movies, especially science fiction ones. Pic related. It's about a dude who lives in a weird, post-apocalyptic world where marriage is a prostitution contract, but he has a loving robot wife, whom he breaks by humping her on a wet floor, so he has to go out into the wasteland to find a new one, which he aims to do with the help of a tomboy in a muscle car. Oh, and the bad guys are some sort of New Age sect.

It's from before that time when they hadn't yet figured out to give the good guys some mooks, too, so you don't see how the bad guys have terrible aim. The director also directed Miracle Mile, which is a pretty damn good movie about Cold War threat and hysteria.

I'm also reminded of The Salute of the Jugger, with my countryman Rutger Hauer in the lead. He's in a few oldschool B movies. I love that movie. I don't know, it's almost like they didn't really give a damn in the past, and ended up making brilliant concepts into cheap movies.
>>
>>8092746
well you still get movies with that B feel to them a lot. One nice thing about being in NYC every movie that comes out in America is sure to play here and in LA, some indies don't get to theaters anywhere else and just put the movie up for online streaming after a run in cinemas in those two cities.

Saw this one the other day and it was good fun. A nice take on those southern slasher flicks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdgvedQ_VH0
oddly enough it has Dolph Lundgren in it as well...

oh and I've never heard of Cherry 2000 but I'll check it out, I loved Miracle Mile despite it being a bit of a downer

Have you seen any movies lately that you really enjoyed? I went to a screening of Princess Mononoke last week and absolutely loved it, definitely my favorite Ghibli movie, why didn't they make more like that instead of yet more movies about young love set in what is essentially the real world and could easily have been made in live action with 0 changes to the script. Such a waste of the medium, I saw Perfect Blue last month and hated it for that reason.
>>
>>8092946
It's been a while since I watched a movie that I really liked. Weird, how you get into the habit of watching with friends, and then you don't watch stuff on your own anymore. I have Netflix, but most of the stuff on there is crap. Kind of like TV, except Netflix doesn't air dodgy science fiction B movies.

Cherry 2000 is nothing like Miracle Mile, though. I really liked Miracle Mile, though.

Never really been into Ghibli, myself. I've seen Porco Rosso, and that one had the most planes in it, so that's probably the best one for me. I'll have to get around to The Wind Rises, because it's about aircraft, too. The studio itself is named after a little-known Italian aircraft. The Italians approached aircraft design like they do every other sort of design: Looks seem to come first.

NuTrek and everything like it is the epitome of safety. It's all calculated to have just the right amount of edge to fool normies into thinking they're watching novel entertainment while never actually raising any questions that could endanger the revenue stream or alienate part of the normie masses. Not to mention to keep costs down by cutting in small, but crucial places.

Just look at all those PG-13 action movies if you want to know what I mean. All this shit where they carefully use their alotment of one "fuck" per movie to say "motherfucker" somewhere, where we see tons of guys get shot, but never a drop of blood. Movies that, at first glance, look tough, but then you watch something oldschool like RoboCop, and you realize how much you miss those gory squib charges. Well, Trek was never gory (except for that one episode of TNG), but it was edgy. In the true sense of the word. Trek definitely looked for the edge of the acceptable.

So furry cat aliens? First off, it's weird, so they're not doing it. Some idiots mights accuse them of bestiality, so they're not doing it. It doesn't measure up to conventional beauty standards, so they're not doing it. And lastly, it would cost a lot more to get an actress in a cool suit, just for that one scene, so they just give her some funny ears and CGI a tail that looks like it's coming out of her asshole and already know no-one will notice.

I might be slightly bitter about the state of Hollywood.

They probably did it as virtue signalling, and Takei just happens to be gay, so everyone already retro-actively applied it to the character he played.

Nothing in the new Trek is being done because of Trek considerations. That's probably why Takei didn't like it. Instead of it being empowering, his sexuality is being used to empower others(' wallets).

Apparently they did talk about it before making the film and Takei said then that he didn't think Sulu should be gay, and that he thought the movie guy had gone away agreeing with him. It wouldn't be so bad if Sulu was made gay without consulting Takei at all (still retarded though) but they actually did talk with him but did it anyway.

Star Citizen is really boring, visually. Sure, it's all rendered with autistic obsession, but it's got such an unbelievably generic feel to it all that I can't possibly get excited over it. That extends to the aliens.

Occasionally you get those German or Russian science fiction games, where they just make up any old shit for aliens. They don't really care, they just know you gotta have aliens. And those designs tend to look more diverse than what Star Citizen has going on.
