I doubt that it'll make it "less niche" because it'll have a stigma of a porn game. But porn games can be popular too, though the question is will specifically this one be worth the man-hours spent.
I actually thought about something like this before, but it sound like a lot of work, mostly asset-wise, plus part of the mass appeal of the Animal Crossing games is their accessibility on the NDS. You could probably just rip assets from original games but it's Nintendo we're talking about, so it means game will be completely underground if decide you go this route.

Well he has a point, animal crossing is already one of Nintendo's lesser selling IP's, then you are making a fan game on a different device than the games are normally on which lessens the playerbase, you take into the account you are now making it more romantically inclined that lessens the audience again because some people will be putoff, you now add actual porn and you have put off most of the initial playerbase because its now just a furry porn game and most people wont play it, and the ones that do you will be lucky is even a quarter would openly talking about it spreading hype. In our little circlejerk here, a porn game sounds awesome but we know writing and story decline in porn games vs clean romance and to someone investing hundreds of hours and money into something, so even if it was a beautifully written dating sim with very nice art, its probably not worth the market for it. But you could always setup sample art get a basic engine going and start a gofundme or kickstarter or that kickstarter for adult products and see if it gets support but I would advice not calling it animal crossing but instead making it themed like it with parody characters.

When I said "clone game", I meant a game that would play similarly to the actual series, not 1:1 scale as that would be very difficult to implement absolutely everything, but /include/ the flirt/date/fuck thing.
I guess the best rough idea of this would be "Stardew Valley but with Animal Crossing characters and gameplay and a sex mod that can be toggled for people who just want the romance".
Now bear in mind, again, it wouldn't be 1:1 with the actual AC games. That doesn't just mean in terms of content and amount of villagers, but also the gameplay.
I've been creating a possible prototype, made in GameMaker Studio (since I have bought most of the exporting options and have lots of experience with it from over the years), so it doesn't have a 3D world or use models, currently only using custom made 2D sprites. Again, merely a prototype and one of these days if the project were to become a thing, it could possibly switch over to Unity or Unreal to make use of the 3D. In my current situation, I don't have hardware that's very powerful to run either of those engines at high framerates, so it's a pain to test things in those. If a lot of people are on board with just using the 2D perspective, then it'll probably stick with that.

As for the "parody" and "not using AC assets and names and such", I'm well aware of the whole Nintendo-fangame debacles, so for the prototype, it'll feature AC characters, but for the full thing it would feature original characters. Since there will no doubt be a want for modding, the game would be open source with the ability to add new villagers by just copying a folder, modifying sprites and some .ini files, and adding the villager ingame (which would essentially allow the game to have actual AC characters since "I cannot control what the users of this game create" like the whole deal Minecraft has).
More prototype, you can strip characters down (currently only Isabelle and Biskit) and such just by right-clicking for debug purposes.

I was pondering on that for a while. Not too solid on a final answer for that, but if I had to say, I'd go with 2D looped scenes. With GameMaker, it's possible to use things like Spine to make 2D skeletal animations and if I go that route and just use body "pieces" (ears, body, limbs, etc. all seperate and bound to specific bones) for each character that the game just animates and binds the pieces in the right spot, it would make easy work of the animations, since all that would need to be made are the "pieces" for each character.

My reason for bringing skeletal animation up is because of the fact that I want to be able to have players be able to import custom characters and have those custom characters take a part in the same animations as the built in characters, which can't exactly happen if using hand-drawn animations. But upon looking up the functions regarding skeletals, it's not possible to use custom sprites outside of what Spine already has exported into the a skin file, so what I said about modifying the pieces would be impossible without users also having bought Spine. So that's out.
However, non-skeletal animations can work and can be accessible to modifying, provided the animations are aliased to make it both match the sprite-like style and make it simple to modify.
