Well, it depends on what do you find scary.
Trailer showed that something scary should be in game, but I don't think it's scary enough to be called a horror element, but I haven't finished the game yet.

So far there is an occurrence of one severed arm, but it's neither gory nor I found it scary. It's uncanny a bit when happens, but the game dilutes that instantly with a mini-game where you poke the severed arm around with a stick. Again, I haven't finished it yet, but I don't think there will be any chase sequences, jump-scares or gore. Lost Constellation had some dark themes in it but it was mild and sometimes even played for laughs.

I'm a buddy of his who posted that cartoon when I bitched and moaned about this game I didn't play yesterday

I learned about the cartoon after (mostly) watching someone play through the whole game on a stream, my opinions are from the perspective of someone who hasn't played the game, and draws a lot of conclusions from watching a game I otherwise wouldn't play. When I saw a trailer for it from another buddy of mine, I reserved my judgement because they seemed very keen on it and I figured "Hey, maybe it isn't everything I'm assuming it's going to be". It's exactly what I assumed the game was going to be and I hate it.

What I gather from it is it's got nice visuals (the style more-so than the animation, which is unfortunately lackluster given some of the talent on the project) and and some okay music. That's not enough to carry something like this for me, especially when the writing is obnoxious as it is, on top of the way they present the dialogue. You can't tell how most of the characters are emoting half the time thanks to their mostly blank expressions, and the font that's only uppercase.

A lot of the people I see enjoying the game are people who seem to:

or
>be very invested in anything with anthropomorphic characters

and that's not something I'm going to knock them for. If you enjoy NITW, fine, but it just comes off as another one of those indie art games that are hardly games. It's a narrative-driven story with a weak narrative and weaker writing in my opinion. But it's important to note I don't give a fuck about narrative/story driven games so there's next-to-nothing in this game for me.

I play a lot of video games actually, sometimes "artsy" games but not as often as "normal" games. I've played gameplay-games with better narration and writing than NITW, and I've played worse, longer, and more expensive narration-driven games than NITW.

But honestly I just really enjoy the overall presentation of the game. It's pleasant to look at and I find visuals original enough, it has nice music and sound design, it has fun minigames and I find dialogues good enough to read. I think it doesn't rely too heavily on narration.

The thing is that the characters are being facetious a lot amongst each other, mainly because they're friends and live in a small town. I know this since I've pretty much done the same shit with my friends. You live in a small town, there's usually not that much to do for kids and teens compared to the city so you do and say stupid shit all the time instead.

Friends do weird shit and talk in ways they wouldn't with anyone else, go figure. I might as well make the claim that anyone that doesn't relate with the dialogue in NITW might just be a very anti-social person or someone with no close friends.

Undertale was pretty text heavy too, and the writing was the main draw of that game. Same with NITW.

It really just takes a youtuber to be interested in the game and stream it for it to take off. If Markiplier never touched FNAF then I don't think it would have hit the absurd levels that it did.

The main connection I can see with both FNAF and Undertale is the simplistic graphics topped with some unique gameplay. While both games have very simple gameplay concepts, you can't deny that said concepts are unique. That, and story plotlines that are deliberately ambiguous and can lead to a TON of speculation. More so in FNAF's case as it had plenty of background bits to piece something together, as for Undertale it more defied your expectations at the end, forcing players to rethink everything up to that point. That, and Undertale had plenty of background bits that allowed for plenty of interpretations as for what the hell happened.

I guess NITW doesn't have that same ambiguous plotlines, except for the ending presumably (I'm going to finish it tonight, I have just heard the ending isn't explained at all. I ended up spending plenty of time making sure I found every last god damn thing every day, and also doing the true ending for demontower), and the gameplay is bare bones at best with some weird mini games I didn't expect. I'm sure it could become popular if a big streamer went through it and did overly shocked facial expressions at the implied weird shit going on early in the game and fake horror reactions later, and part of me is surprised because this is a slightly more well known indie game releasing right now.
