Interesting. I'd considered chloroform (maybe a cloth full of the stuff), but chloroform evaporates crazy fast. If it was plain old chloroform and there was enough exposed to the air to give a strong smell, it should have been gone by the time they got a chance to smell it.

I imagine the chloroform was originally wrapped in the rag that was used and stuffed in the box to help hide the sent. The kidnappers and/or murders probably threw the vial back in the box and either dropped it or forgot about it or they did that at every kidnapping and the Endtown police are just that incompetent.

I agree that's there's probably a twist coming. OTOH I can imagine that when the reality of sharp knives and sharp teeth really sets in there may be some last minute freak outs even from 'willing' victims. Better to make sure they're sedated before the final cut.

Plus you can sort of see it as a way to sell it. It's like sterilizing the skin when they give someone a lethal injection. Or the legendary blank cartridge on a firing squad. A gesture to help people sleep at night.

Why risk being caught transporting a corpse/unconscious body through town? Especially when everyone knows a bunch of pigs have gone missing? Why burden yourself during your getaway?

Why risk contaminating the scene with vomit or something else from a bad gassing?

Why risk getting held up somewhere with an unwilling victim who's slowly returning to consciousness? If they did actually use the vial, they poured practically the whole thing... chloroform needs to be re-administered continually to keep someone unconscious, and as mentioned the cloth is non-optimal because it's just gonna let it evaporate in all directions. Ever spilt rubbing alcohol on fabric? It's like that.

For that matter, how do they get them out of there without anyone seeing? A vehicle turning up outside the home of each missing person is a thing that makes a pattern for cops to detect in eyewitness statements. And how many different vehicles can there be in Endtown anyway? Haven't we seen only the cops and the rats using them? Anyone else?

It'd make more sense to only take the willing ones, and walk them out with a random operative each time like it was a social thing (send non-terrifying anthros). Then knock them out or kill them at the destination, when you're in an environment that you control down to the last detail - cleanups, tools, materials. Don't show them any cutlery until they're in your domain and behind closed doors.

Additionally... as an intoxicating (and possibly taste-tainting) chemical additive used on prospective food, I'm fairly sure you'd want them alive to pass or metabolise the chloroform out of their systems before you ceased all vital functions by killing them, which would necessitate them living through their anesthetic sleep and entering the "likely to struggle" phase again. I'm pretty sure this is one reason actual slaughterhouse animals are killed by physical methods, not chemical (cost likely being another).

I don't think it dented following the drain during the Kirbeening that much but I think it hit a plateau. The comic is kind of in a limbo right now and I think even Aaron is starting to see that the new heroes are not really gripping with the audience.

I can't speak for anyone else, but Dottie and Walt have always been a side dish for me - cute, and nice, but as far as i'm concerned they're supporting characters - and I've always found Endtown to be the least interesting part of the strip's under-explored setting (funnily enough, the comic was originally going to be called Hillside, which suggests that once upon a time Aaron wanted it to have a broader terrestrial scope than it's ended up with).

I know. I kind of wish we'd seen more of the Hillside wasteland and the other settlements by now, though. The story seems to take ages to go anywhere lately, and when it does, it gets bogged down... seven years, and we haven't even seen a single living example of another settlement besides Unity, despite a bunch of them being named.

Aside from the semi-static, nostalgic Endtown we've seen a sum total of one post-apoc culture that developed (Unity) and we've had glimpses of another (the Topsiders) but we've never gotten to see how the other settlements have developed and diverged culturally and organisationally, stuff that could really flesh out the world and give a crucial boost in interest to the comic (and among other things, inspire more fan works). And now I worry that Aaron's concentrating on the multiversal/Long Game stuff at the expense of the more grounded parts of the setting.

I've actually wondered if that was one of the reasons he changed his mind on the RPG - it seemed focused on the actual Earthly part of the setting while giving mere lip service to Marx etc, and it was exploring parts of the world that he hadn't reached yet in the comic, parts he may possibly have had nothing but rough mental sketches of, if he had anything at all besides names.

Okay, sorry, I worry *more* lately, ever since the recent Marx tirade and KC's rant about Marx being behind everything, even the stuff that wasn't known before. I don't think it is that obvious for a lot of people, especially if most of them are like the Gocomics folks. The computer is ambiguously broken, so without direct mention that it withholds life support (and we saw Wally and co being fed in the sim, so people have already seen it being given out and might expect it to be canny enough to give its victims rest periods), people aren't necessarily going to assume that it's crazy enough to do so. I do recall the computer was implied to milk its "batteries" regularly, not constantly, which could easily imply down periods.

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that I can see how people would get the wrong idea. And you can explain it all you like here on 4chan - heck, Aaron can even go over it in an email - but neither of those will reach the majority of the casual audience.
