The US political system is meant to be a hierarchy of equals governing their equals on the behalf of the governed. It is not meant to be a system of superiors and inferiors where those with government experience are somehow held up as higher, more wise or more important than those outside of government.

When we start letting ourselves believe that government experience equals a better, wiser, more intelligent person, we set up the problems with the dynastic politics with people who stay in government their whole lives, trading one office for another with no seeming end goal but to accrue more power and wealth.

Trump is an outsider who campaigned as an outsider and was supported because he is an outsider. He's the necessary pressure release valve that lets the average common folk show they are still heard and still matter and without which they would inevitably ferment revolution.

It's an acknowledgement that the system is woefully broken, and it was consciously broken to support leftist idealism about migration and multiculturalism. So if the system is being used to do something we perceive as harmful, we want to shut the system down entirely, and then rebuild it from the ground up.

And to do that, we need to stop taking in refugees until we can actually hammer out a new system where we actually treat them as refugees instead of as overprivileged immigrants.

I fear that high HDI might be a bubble. part of it is highly artificial, anyway. Yes, they earn a lot on paper, but they also live in an extremely expensive country. Something simple like owning a house is nigh-impossible in a lot of "wealthy" European countries.

Furthermore, socialist taking the whole credit for it is kind of ludicrous. There are also countries up high on the list who don't pursue the same politics, most notably the US. Okay, what is your idea of superior culture? I really don't get it. American culture is great. Saying someone is a useless person because someone who is essentially a serf under a communist regime is willing to do your job for cheaper puts 90% of society, including a long list of skilled and productive jobs under a bus of 'useless'.

If the response to that is 'well they should just get skilled' then it's with a total disregard for the concept of a republic where representatives work in the interest of the people.

Naturally industries in the west have been attracted to increasing worker protection and environmental rights with increasingly complex bureaucracy. Manufacturing and mining were skill based industries that was accessible to people at the bottom of the financial ladder but as you progressed could take you pretty close to what you'd call middle class. It was a backbone to a lot of the workforce base in the west, so it being cleaved out by China is going to cause a big social/economic disruption in society.

I can't say what the solution to that is, if there even is one, because people pushed for regulation for pretty easy to understand reasons and to remove them completely would essentially make us into China 2.0, but the actual truth to the matter is not that Chinese peasants can do it better, it's because Chinese companies have far less obligations and running costs as a result of government policy.

My real opinion is that comparative advantage is a thing, and China has a comparative advantage in unskilled manufacturing. As a result, it would be stupid not to trade with them. In fact, this isn't even an opinion—"trade is mutually beneficial" is a core tenant of modern economics and you can demonstrate it easily with a graph. Just google "comparative advantage."

Trade with china has displaced a small number of jobs in return for a huge reduction in the price of goods. The net economic effect is positive. Even if you got rid of all regulations china would likely still have a comparative advantage because no American can afford to work for Chinese wages.

The economically smart thing to do is implement something like a carbon tax and use the money to pay for training programs. It is not to implement high tariffs. That slightly benefits former factory workers at the expense of our overall economy.

Economically, an American who refuses to work anything but an unskilled factory job is inefficient, and we can only allow them to get that job by fucking over a large amount of consumers. I don't see that as a reasonable tradeoff when we could just refrain them.

Nobody deserves to work a job that has no economic purpose. Otherwise me may as well go around smashing windows so people can repair them.
