I haven't commissioned anything recently since my countries dollar:USD is shit right now... but also considering the fact straight artists that do detailed, explicit, pussy focused art worth paying for seem to be a dying breed outside of Nuzzo.

I won't ever commission these people on principal, no exceptions even if your art sometimes makes me hard as a rock. Having Patreon's that are anything more than a tip jar or 2 week delay. I don't care how good your art is. When combined with the stuff above I'm about ready to leave the Western furfag community behind entirely and just commission kemono artists.

Artists that spam my submission feed with streaming notice pictures, use a journal. I'd still commission but it's fucking obnoxious.

Artists that spam my submission feed with paywalled crops/previews. You make browsing my submission feed a scenario in blueballing. I will unwatch artists for this irregardless of skill level.

Whining, blogging, begging, attention seeking, drama, crafts, or life-styler shit mixed into the gallery.


Artists with poor reading comprehension or who don't send a rough sketch to make sure things aren't fucky. I commissioned a solo pin-up with 2 annotated references. It was 4 easy to understand sentences and I get something completely wrong that could have been avoided by taking 2 seconds to read. Made worse considering I usually shoot for ~$150 art and the names to go behind it. It was a cub artist and I live in a place that would jail me for the shit so I was hesitant to make issue out of it.

Anti-gaijin Japanese artists (mixed considering I respect their nationalism and refusal to do business with outsiders). Getting blocked on their uncensored twitter for speaking honky hurts.

When they don't do that and it's NOT a commission, its really disappointing, even if the art is good. I don't understand why, but porn with a story makes everything 3 times better. While it's shitty to befriend someone for the sake of art, there's ways to kind of make it more likely to happen.

Don't seem like you talk to them just to get art. Discuss ideas with them that you both might like, but don't ask if they wanna draw the idea, and don't focus specifically on just stuff you like. Also notice cues, if an artist just responds with "yeah" or "nice" a lot, they (probably) don't care about what you are talking about.

And if you want art of your character, make sure your character design isn't complete shit. Most furry characters are nondescript or overdetailed and nobody wants to waste time drawing them for anything but large sums of money to negate the boredo/tedium.

-writing something of decent quality generally takes a while (a few to a dozen hours for a story of reasonable length seems about right)
-as a corollary, the ratio of work to reward (i.e., getting positive feedback) is very poor in general
-writing tends not to be as visible (like with a Pastebin link) and may struggle to get attention unless it is directly appealing to a fandom/popular character
-instant gratification from picture whereas a story requires an investment of time to appreciate when there's not even a guarantee of satisfaction in the first place
-no furry-centric website with a fiction emphasis
-a lot of people who write fapfics tend to write without any direction

Some artists might do a few things wonderfully but something could be lacking. Maybe the proportions are kind of awkward. Maybe the feet and legs are too bulky. Maybe the artist's style, respectable as it is doesn't quite capture the essence of the character I like. Maybe I don't mind the last picture at all and simply want to see how it's done by another artist to test how they handle my choice fapbait.

I can understand it being stagnant in some cases and downright grating, but personally speaking it's either wanting to see if it can be done much more interesting than before or to bring a whole new dimension on the idea, all due respect to previous artists. Me, I usually have a set of characters I enjoy revisiting but it doesn't mean I don't like trying new faces if they appeal to me.

I can explain this one at least. When you do art, a lot of people try to message you after a while, it gets to the point where you always have a ring of orbiters or friends talking you up.You can potentially handle more conversations, but you don't want to start them up because you already have some on your plate.

If you meet someone and this is the case, but they seem happy to see you, just go along with it, because they probably do enjoy your company, they just have a lot of people talking to them.

For most artists that (want to)make a living off drawings in general, they do this to avoid doing something illegal. Depending on where you live, it can be against the law to draw someone that is underage, whether they're fictional or not. Canada, Australia, and some European countries are a good example(There are more countries, but I can't recall all of them). I can't speak for every artist, but whether the artist themselves are into loli/shota or not, they'll stand on the egde to either respect their country's law or to avoid ANY backlash from the Internet. Although artists have been receiving backlash from the online community over silly doodles for years, one thing a majority of them are trying to avoid is drawing anything that could label them as a pedophile.

The moment you accept money for commissions, register a custom domain name, or attend conventions to sell your goods, any kind of anonymity is thrown out the window. It doesn't matter if you're an artist or not, the last thing people want to do is have their identity represented with pedophilic rumors. Unlike other rumors, people(primarily Americans) will eat up any pedophile-related allegation for years, with or without proof... it can destroy the social aspect of your life or even your career. No one wants to put up with that.

True, assuming you're talking about people from America. Getting arrested for creating, distributing, or possessing drawn pornography is extremely rare. I'm fine with artists doing regular, non-auction YCHs, but only doing YCH auctions is a little annoying. Plenty of people want to commission artists for specific ideas. When an artist only does YCH auctions, the only way to get art from them is by letting them draw a character however they want to. Also it's an auction, which means you have to compete with autists who are willing to spend as much as it takes to get a popular artist to draw their OC. Look at Slugbox. All he does are YCH auctions and only takes regular commissions when he has some kind of emergency.

I was considering starting a patreon because a few people have asked because they would like to give back financially somehow. I figured because of my number of subjects I could do polls.
