From that picture alone, it's kinda got that bland but overfluffy stylization that people do when they are creatively bankrupt or trying to spice up a design, but it inadvertantly makes it worse. That eevee's "hair" looks dumb, like that unnessesary line between the head and hair just makes it look like a king of the hill character.

It's not the worst art style and I wouldn't describe it as "painful to look at' but it's not one I'd want to spend time looking at.

Most of the time artists want to improve their art, because that's how they got to where they are in the first place. They rely on audience feedback to do that.

If the feedback they get is dominated by fuckers with no taste praising everything they do then the artists get stagnant, repetitive, and never fixes their bad habits. They get complacent and end up developing complexes about their "style".

Fun fact, next to no one have any grasp of anatomy, at least no one making less then a living wage off drawing itself, and even then you can pick anatomy apart. Personally I quite like Kuroodods art, but then I like it because of the stupid proportions and fetishy'ness of it; it makes it unique. I like the eevee story as well since it doesn't take itself seriously and is basically just an excuse for eevee to have sex/gay sex with the other eevees.

For the meantime it's popular and that's the main thing. If people lose interest I can see him changing his art style but like I said earlier there is no point in changing something that people enjoy.

Art is a subjective thing, but there are rules that exist in art for good reasons - because there's years and years of established understanding about what looks right and what makes people dismiss stuff as amateurish.

The "bad" artists that we're talking about in this thread are just people who've learned from tracing bad anime drawings and have never learned how to do things properly. Once you know the rules you can break them any way you want, and break them in ways that look good.

If you don't know the rules, on the other hand, you end up with styles that just look like the artist doesn't know better.

Proportions are one thing, changing the size of the balls is something that isn't a great example.
The things that people usually criticize are things like putting too much or too little definition on details, having wrong anatomy (human shoulders on animals, or having too many bones in a leg), inconsistent lighting, poor shading, or a wrong sense of 3d form.

Sure all those things are subjective too, but most people will notice those things, even if they can't quite describe it out loud.

Are you trying to argue that more people woud like his art if he changed the style? Personally I think that the reason his art is popular is because it has a unque style, there is already a metric ton of pokemon art with feral/realistically proportioned characters; one of the reasons I think oversexed eevee is popular is becuase it is cute and roundy, but also not too feral which makes it very unique and different.

It's not that he's not spending the time on it, it's that he doesn't know how to do it right and doesn't seem to care about that. Looking through his artist tag on e621 shows that he does the same thing on pinups and things too, which presumably he spends a little more time on than comic panels.

You don't have to make it an artistic masterpiece, but you should be attempting to make it more appealing by sharpening your skills, acquiring new knowledge, and experimenting with iterative changes.

I mean look at this, I made a redline on the picture above which retains the same proportions and fixes the terrible shoulder and leg anatomy. It retains the unique style whilst also having a decent understanding of how quadrupeds work.

I think that with your corrections, the character does look a lot more like a leafeon should but it also looks more feral and a little less cutesy. Making things cute is all about keeping it simple In Kuro's case the characters are drawn simply and shaded simply, and while it doesn't look much like the source material, it is unique to that artist. If he changed the style and made it more feral, then chances are people would complain, not only that but it would make his art more generic which is generally not a good thing.

I've been seeing an increasing amount of this guy around and I haven't found a single one of his pics appealing.
Everything looks like it's made from thick leather, characters look weird and his rendering looks like he doesn't want to put effort into learning how lighting works, so he just adds fairly flat colors and throws shine absolutely everywhere.
Then again his work seems to be 100% commissions nowadays, so he probably just goes by with the minimal effort needed to get those pics done.

Now I DO wear glasses so it might just be my eyes (I'm not blind if I don't wear them however). Just something about the green... Its really strong for me to look at.

I love unsolicited advice and critique. I wish I got more of it because it's actually very helpful to have an outside opinion pointing me in the right direction. Believe it or not, there are some artists who aren't egocentric and who believe they're the pinnacle of artistic achievement, so thank you!

I've had the conversation with a lot of other artists, and I think the reason lineart is so much less lively than the sketch is because of how you do it. The sketch is quick, sloppy, and has a lot of tiny imperfections in it. That gives it a lot of character, and the flaws that you didn't intend to be there make it look more natural.

When you're drawing lineart you're concentrating a lot on trying to make each line perfect and ideal. It looks more soulless because it kind of is a less soulful process than the sketch phase. Even if you concentrate more on the line weight like I did on this one, it never captures that same feeling. If I knew how to capture it whilst still having clean lineart then I'd be one happy degenerate.

As for the pose in the last one, you'd be right that it's not very exciting. The gimmick in that pic would be the lighting, since it'll be night with fireworks going on behind her. I thought a simple pose would go well with that, maybe at a bit of a funky dutch-angle.

While you're drawing, ask yourself "what looks off, is it a symbol drawing, or is the perspective off". Assuming you haven't learned the fundamentals of art(which I HIGHLY recommend you learn), whip out some references off Google, trace the reference's skeleton with circles and lines. It'll help show you the construction of a specific pose without having to copy the image directly.

I do occasionally follow a reference, though I never trace, even though I probably do that to help me understand more of building the basics.

Eh, that's pretty common. I can understand why this could piss off anyone, but it's not worth trippin' over, friend. When I try to build up something from my imagination and the drawing looks nothing like how I imagined, I do the whole "ask yourself whats wrong" thing, and try my best to correct any errors with construction. It's rare, but sometimes this leads to something better than I originally imagined, even though my art is extremely mediocre.

Whether it be a 2D character, 3D character, or a real photo of a person, breaking it down with shapes is good for understanding their construction. But, if possible, try using 3D shapes after using basic circles and lines to help you understand the pose from a specific perspective.
