That's everything about Hybrid Theory and Meteora and that's what makes them work - they were immaculately produced commercial takes on nu-metal that directed their anger at a nebulous something - they're mad, but what exactly are they mad at? Whatever it was though, teenagers flocked to that relatable angst like flies to shit. Personally, I think A Thousand Suns is the closest thing to an actual good album that the band ever made but there's no denying the safe appeal and blemishless execution of their early albums.

Burning In The Skies, When They Come For Me, Waiting For The End, Blackout, Wretches and Kings, and The Catalyst are all good songs, while Wisdom, Justice, and Love was a cool little bit of distortion fuckery. That's 7 out of 15 in my book, and even then some throwaways like Empty Spaces and Fallout could've easily been outros to the songs they preceded. For my money, that's a higher average quality than any other LP album. The early stuff is nostalgic but I'd say a handful of songs between it all are actually good like Cure For The Itch or Breaking The Habit.

Katatonia's still holding on to it, albeit barely. Renske's vocal cords went out though and if he was to keep vocal duties they had to change it up. Still, some recent songs like Dead Letters or Serac still put their metal heritage up to the forefront. As for Anathema, can't tell you but something definitely clicked for them from Judgement onwards, they sound way more comfortable with the alt rock/neo-prog thing. Really? Living Things struck me as a horribly confused mess. Lies, Greed, Misery in particular was painful because it came across to me as a cynical attempt to return to the angst of the early albums after they so clearly tried to move away from it with Minutes and ATS. It's handily my least favorite from the band, but then again I think ATS is their best.

I actually applaud ATS myself because it was a refined, more interesting take on Minutes to Midnight with all its electronic textures and stronger dedication to its concept. In all honesty the band's first 2 albums were always commercialized, pristine rap metal. They made good pop music but it's silly to say LP was anything more at the time, or that they couldn't be anything more than that. I at least respect the band's desire to shatter their own MO on ATS, and I honestly think that they made better music on that record in the process.
>>

I like Meteora more than Hybrid Theory but honestly it was just Linkin Park angsting AND brooding with slightly better production as opposed to the pure angst of HT. Songs like From The Inside or Easier To Run pretty handily foreshadow the whinier parts of Minutes to Midnight. In retrospect the flutes on Nobody's Listening is probably the most notable part of that album. Oh, and Chester had his first solo songs there, Mike actually didn't rap on a couple songs. That's something, I suppose.

I bumped it right before it was moved here. Guess that mod didn't want to wait any longer and didn't feel like 404 it.

I was in a car with cousins and stuff, sudenly In The End sounds on the radio and I started to sing quietly and they, one by one, started to follow me and we ended up singing really hard and good. When the song ends we acted like nothing happend.
