I wonder if Disney is uncomfortable with the political nature of this film. At first I thought they'd be uncomfortable with the furries, then there I was staring at sexy tiger dancer. I thought they'd shy away from polarizing politics, but then they held that debate watching party.
Then there's the powerful Chinese market that made them so much money, but for them accused of spreading propaganda.
I guess what I'm getting at is that even though Zootopia is the second highest grossing animated film based on an original script, it still remains Disney's riskiest move. I wonder how much that factors into the future of every new film starting with Tangled wither getting a sequel or a series.

At this point, Disney's so big that it can take these kind of risks. It wouldn't have happened during Walt's day and even during the Disney Renaissance in the 90's, but it was an appropriate time for it to come out.

As for what factors get into a movie getting an expansion?

Tangled is getting an animated series, as is Big Hero 6.

Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen are both getting film sequels.

At this point it's pretty likely that Zootopia will get something in the future; it might take a while.

I only have Imagineer-side knowledge of Disney, and films is a completely different division with completely different subdivisions, but from what I hear whispers of, Disney is putting their future in IPs and franchising. They don't want a one-off film they want a film with a promise of a sequel and a comic and etc etc etc.

You're already seeing this with Star Wars. Were going to have multiple Star Wars movies every year for the rest of our lives, probably. Romance Star Wars movies, horror Star Wars movies, young-adults-leave-space-college-and-try-to-find-themselves Star Wars movies. Franchise will overtake genre as category.

But Disney is also very, very small-c conservative when it comes to business. They don't like moving fast. They want to be sure every shot will hit its mark. Pixar helped them mix their old animated film division up, which was plagued by 'makes-sense-on-paper-but-is-shitty-in-practice' corporate structuring, but they're still getting their footing.

A sequel is probably 5 years away. However, with how they look at their long-term business plans, they won't shy away from making more of a proven idea.

As for the political nature of the film, they're well aware that China is a thing (and hearing about how they made everything in Disneyland China work is fascinating), but they do care deeply about their products' messages. That's why Zootopia's message still rings clear-- prejudice is bad-- but, and here's the brilliance of the message, it also isn't specific to one culture.

Kinda feel the same, you have to realize though most people write what they're used to, and normally the man is the one who has to fight for the relationship. So they have to give Nick a clear motivation, despite Nick age and lifestyle.

I'm more irked about how people represent their relationship. Where in the movie both sides relied on each other on every turn, in fics Nick is always ridiculously reliant on Judy and she basically only stay around Nick because she likes him. It ends up making Nick pathethic for an old hustler and Judy a Mary Sue, it isn't what I enjoyed on the movie at all.
