I'm not really into Star Fox (haven't played it besides Zero and Guard, which yeah, I know aren't really representative of the series) but I am interested in discussing it due to all the what-could-have-beens and the weird limbo the franchise is stuck in.

Which direction would you guys rather go in? Continuing from SF64 as a split continuity (not in-universe though, just int he meta sense) that tries to be to Star Fox 2 what Star Fox 64 was to the SNES game or continuing from Assault but ignoring Command? Either way involves retconning other games but I was just wondering which direction was more interesting.

I think the issue lies in it aged very poorly, but that's not to say some things held up. Johnny marathoned the whole series and admits that the very original doesnt stand up so much now.

That's largely my opinion too except I am much harsher on Zero and prefer 64 to 64 3D.

Zero is trash.

64 3D ruined a few things by making space bright and blue and pretty. There's a lot of dark areas in 64 where enemies fade in from the darkness, giving an effect where they are emerging from the darkness of space. Having space bright and blue ruins that effect to where enemies are invisible 50 feet out but aren't as you get closer.

Since Zero ended up being shit, there's been support for a proper sequel to Assault. There's also been support for Adventures as well.

The same johnny guy even showed the same interest, laughed at Command, but really wished there was a more proper follow up to Assault as he really liked that game.

I've also mentioned it myself, but i've kinda thought of what would be a decent sequel, but of course

With how Zero performed, that's probably the only way that'll even save it at this point. Because as even the majority of journalists and others have realized, 64s popularity diminished. Some say it goes far as to 64 was a one hit wonder, it's not to say it's terrible, it's to say that it's really not as much as a masterpiece as some try to make it out as and it even shows.

>64 3D didnt sell nearly as much as 64 did in 1997, didnt pass the million mark at all, even then it took over five years.
>Take into account that a month after this was released that Ocarina of Time 3D released and it easily wiped the floor with it, and remember these are 2/3 of those "popular" N64 games
>Zero did much worse, only hitting as much as 300k overall, in Japan it practically bombed and Miyamoto bitched about it after whining about wanting Japan to love it again hilariously enough

I'm convinced people wanted SF64 back without really remembering what made it so popular in the first place. As far as the Nintendo 64 went, that was about as good as the graphics were going to get on the platform. Throw in fully voice lines (on a cartridge no less), and it was instantly a standout.

Though how you'd replicate those conditions in this age of graphics and tech I'm not so sure. Maybe if they focused less on "what's a gimmick we can add with the motion controls" and more on making it look and run better, they might be able to reignite the series

From what i've seen, it's the complete opposite. The vocal minority, aka the purefags were the ones who wanted a "true" SF64 sequel (by true I mean wanting literally rehashing the same shit with no improvement, like genwunners), while the majority wanted a sequel to Assault that completely ignored Command, some even saying they'd like to see Adventures be remade.

Though these people may of gotten what they wanted (despite just being a shittier remake of 64), it ultimately ended in defeat because it not only did Zero flopping only resulted in what I just explained but it discredits Star Fox 64 as being that masterpiece they claim it to be still. Ironically the result actually helped the latter sides end as;
