And remember how Ruby was in Jailbreak when Steven first found her? Ruby's not the most stable Gem to begin with, but even on subsequent watchings of the episode, she starts off seeming like she was having withdrawals. And when she got out, she was trying to use future vision to find Sapphire, a power that she (as Ruby) does not have. Not exactly a sign of thinking straight.

So I think it's safe to say that being in a fusion for extended periods of times has an effect. Probably not a permanent one, but enough to affect how their individual traits influence the fusion.

I bet this has been brought up before but.. do you think that the way a character looks may actually depend more on steven't view on them instead of their actual physical appearance? That is, while gems actually reform and change outfits etc, sizes and "roundness" of a character is affected by how steven understands them? That would explain why connie, jasper, lapis, heck even pearl have become rounder, cuter over time. That would also explain why Rose looks o different from the others, as if she were not drawn the the same style, as his relationship to her is unique and complex

For Jasper, it's be because of AIDS that may or may not leave a visible effect on her post-healing. Or simply that she'd never get close enough to anyone to get to the point of fusion (I also don't think her helmet can even probably fuse with others' weapons)
