When the system was developed this was an appropriate way to do things, because there was no way in hell that each individual vote could be tallied, so we needed a middleman system to better represent the people of America.

But that was in an era where fucking quills were still being used, we live in a day and age where we have enough technology to accurately surmise what each individual citizen wants for their country. A local government is fine for handling state-by-state issues, sure, but as far as the presidential elections go there is absolutely no reason for such an ass-backwards system to stay in place.
