Actually, the original Digimon were and were meant to be unsettling. Screws or chains or metal rivets welded into flesh, scars across the entire body, arms and legs that were too long or too short or didn't match.

Although there was a definite case of "belt buckles are cool" liberally splashed everywhere.

These aspects were toned down in later seasons and they started adding waifumons to attract older otakus.
