One of the biggest indicators of inteigence is the brain/body mass ratio.

Neanderthals have a larger average bodymass, so the larger brain cancels out.

absolutely on point. I just don't like the "big brain equals big intellect" meme. it's the connections, and the number of nerve cells merely allow for a higher number of synaptic contacts, but if not used, it's as good as any other animal brain. I heard people survived losing a brain hemisphere and merely lost some minor reflexes, like understanding metaphors intuitively, when it happened early enough in life.
