The problem with Hyenas. Hyenas are cool, they are large, extremely intelligent, highly social, omnivorous pack hunters that have some nifty stereotypes associated with them. And frankly there just aren't that many well known pack cool pack animals to choose from. However when you look closer hyenas have some cultural and physiological eccentricities that when anthropomorphised take a headlong nosedive so far down the freaky fetish hole that you are guaranteed to squick 95% of your audience.

You literally have an extreme matriarchal society where the chicks have dicks and are half again larger than any male. There is no way you can incorporate them into an anthropomorphic society and not be accused of playing to fetishes without either figuratively or literally castrating them, which just goes a different direction, you cant win.

If you want a social carnivore character for your story go for something else, like a wolf or a lion.

Revisions are almost done for the baby steps prologue and work on the first chapter should begin tonight. Your advice really helped me out a lot.

And to other writers and readers. What is your prefered word count on chapters? Since I starder reading fiction I've always enjoyed very long stories with huge chapters in then (some of my favorites going into the 20k word count per chapter) but I understand most people prefer a higher number of small chapters.

What do you guys prefer? Give me a rough estimate.

I don't really have one.
As a writer, I end a chapter where I feel it needs to end.
But on average I think I usually let them run around 4,000 - 6,000 words per chapter.
It really depends on when you want to give your reader a break.

You end a chapter when you need to. Writing to a set number of words just leads to friction during the process--you start thinking "this is too short" or "I need to start wrapping this scene up in order to hit the mark." Far better it is to simply write out your scenes and structure the chapters around them. There are natural pauses in any narrative; you just need to spot those in editing.
