I have one and only one. He's been with me over a fuckload of time, and he's been barely unchanged in his aspect besides some small looks and his personality.

Eventually I made more characters that represent me over the years, but they were not furry at all but more akin to eldritch atrocities and strange beings. All with a story and concept behind them mind you, but I barely made them public outside with friends and the like. I admit I am a bit ashamed over my furry character but he is one of my favorites regardless, but the main reason I want to keep them private is due how well received they normally are (Especially the furry one), even by strangers.

They are all huge in-jokes between my internet friends. Nobody IRL would understand.

I'm not insane enough to believe in spirit animals or whatever, but I also don't have the necessary imaginative skills or creativity to make one just for character design's sake.

I'd like to make one so I can have an excuse to do some kind of at least mildly unique suit, but it's more for the excuse to do some arts n' crafts more than for roleplaying with it. Even as an online avatar, I'd rather design something like a logo or emblem than a character.

Depends on the artist, but I'd say it's pretty close. Just find one that's willing to show you steps and allows you to request changes (of course the changes need to be small and early. If you say you forgot they were suppose to have wings after it's done then you fucked up)

Depends on the quality of the ref, the artist and the time of the commission.

A professional artist will do their best to remain professional regardless of their mood but there are shitters that will reject even the most basic shit because they are angry or overall sentimental (At which point they should have their commissions closed to prevent this).

An image normally should be enough but it depends on the situation you want the character to be in. But if it’s a full body picture you should be fine, you don’t need an overly detailed picture for that but it might help. If you can get someone to draw you a full body character ref you’ll be golden though.

That would make some sense. I came up with a stupid theory to the increase of hyena furs and it's basically that just like how a lot of the "first generation furries" as I called them grew up on Robin Hood (Disney) and so you had all these fox furs, I feel that growing up on The Lion King probably played a part on why so many millennial furries have hyena fursonas. Like I said, it's a stupid theory.
