I've been working under the assumption that anything a species doesn't eat IRL is okay as either a whole meal once in a while or as a small addition to a more appropriate meal in Zootopia. So you can have things like herbivores eating a bit of fish with their dinner, or a whole burga, as long as the rest of their diet is healthy.

So by these sorta rules, chocolate wouldn't be some nasty poison to a bunch of species, either.

Thanks! Yeah, the animal behavior is a bit of a favourite of mine, since it adds a whole new exploratory phase to relationships and makes each character that much more unique. Plus it's been educational - I never realized how large and strong beaver dams were, or that they were such strong and confident swimmers before I started doing research. They can apparently hold their breath for 15 minutes, twice as long as sea otters!

I haven't read anything about it, but I'm hardly an expert. I do know that when a beaver holds territory, it learns what the creatures in neighboring territory smell like, and then it reacts to intrusions from these neighbours much less aggressively than it would if a total stranger was doing it. And if the neighbor is a beaver that's related to it - and it can tell by it's scent - it's even more mellow about the intrusion, to the extent that neighboring holts can actually cooperate to build dams together. The largest beaver dams are hundreds of meters long!

Not quite, each beaver lodge holds one family - an adult male and female, and their children, though older children do assist in dam-building and looking after the younger children. However, multiple lodges can be built in the same bit of river, and thus would both benefit from a shared dam. Especially since offspring are likely to stay near their parents' lodge when they strike out on their own, and could end up cooperating with their parents to tame the same stretch of river.

This most often happens not in rivers at all, but in stretches of wetlands, where a large dam is required to build up the water level enough to create suitable ponds for beavers. You can see multiple lodges in this satellite pictures - they're the roundish 'islands' in the middle of the ponds.

They also apparently coexist and even cooperate with muskrats, sharing territory and sometimes even their home - muskrats have been seen living in beaver dens without being chased out by the beavers living inside. So a little bit of inter-species cohabitation might be built into beavers right at their core.

I do wonder which route they're going with the non-mammal animals in Zootopia's setting. Ironclaw is OK with reptile stand-ins for most livestock, but that doesn't work if there's a reptile city out there. (Although if there were intelligent reptiles, you'd expect to see a few mixed into the crowd shots on occasion.)
