I was never a fan of Earthbound either. Played it for the first time when i was 9, it was fresh so it hadn't acquired any of it's legacy that it has today so naturally i knew nothing about it.
The 4 second loop combat music and the trippy swirling colors of the minimalistic backgrounds made me nauseous. I was spoiled back then from earlier games so the 2 frame walking animation felt cheap to me, especially after DKC2 and Yoshis Island that very year. The towns and wonky perspective looked like coloring books. Even spells and special attacks didn't look very appealing at all, if i recall, they were just lines of red or blue skidding across.

Played it again during my late teens because of the legacy it had then acquired so i thought to give it another chance. Felt pretty much the same. I can understand why people like it though. Back then the setting was always fantasy world where everyone is an orphan and have blue hair so in that sense, it must have been a great change back then. The enemies seemed out of place at times, like those clocks. I do love the idea of skipping battles when you are so strong that you just crush them in one blow and having the whole sequence would be a waste of time.
Since i never cleared it, did they ever address why there was a pen blocking the way in the waterfall part? I could imagine a force field from the villain being aliens but why a pen specifically?
Also, are the bosses a reference to cheesy invasion/alien movies from the 50's? I like that aesthetic.

In the defense of Dragon quest, it's well written, really at times... better than any Final fantasy in term of vidya narration even...
Like the moment in the 4th one, with the dwarf... he lives close to your home village and tells you he once loved an angel and had a child... but the angle died and he became bitter.

At first you don't like it, but you soon realize HE IS YOUR FATHER... so you came you appreciate him, and visit him to gain LP pretty often, even if he will never know you are his son.

Because the original depicts a world in chibi style, but I've always seen that as being cartoony abstraction and exaggeration. There's humans in the story and by giving those characters actual human proportions, you can get a better idea of what the rest of the characters would look like in the real world. I actually find that appealing since it's an interesting way to adapt the work and also easier to relate to, so the Chaco image in question is a little closer to what I'd expect a Mimiga to look like.

Maybe not suck, it is fun all the way through, but it leaves no lasting impression like Cave Story did, which it is naturally doomed to be compared to.

It's like you just got done watching an episode of a sitcom. You enjoyed it all the way through, but you're not really thinking back on it like it was an AMC drama or something.
