Hey all, shilling my comic script one more time tonight.

Last night I posted a script for a comic about Nick and Judy having a lighthearted conversation in a bar that turns into a painful internal monologue for Nick. I was trying to capture a similar tone to TSF.

Originally I was going to draw it, but I'm pretty terrible at art.

Consensus yesterday was that it was difficult to read due to the script format. If you have thoughts on whether it should be translated into a short story, or whether you would like to see it drawn, any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

To be honest there are very few fics that are actually good. There are two benchmarks that need to be met, and are often failed:

First, the theme/plot of the fic has to be solid/logical.
Second, the writing has to be above-average.

The second one is what fails the most. Take "Blueberries", for example. Solid idea about Nick being a cop in Bunnyburrow, completely ruined by the author writing like he is a 7th grader turning in the first draft of an essay.

For me, there are plenty of fics I've generally liked except for two failings

A:They try to do something dramatic then go way too far. There was a fic I was reading earlier where upon see Nick and Judy together, Stu absolutely loses his shit and disowns Judy.

Then later Nick goes to try to patch things up alone with him, and in a single conversation Stu is like "Ok, you seem nice enough, i guess I jumped the gun". Not only was the drama earlier very sudden and over the top, but it got solved super easily.

The other issue, which is semi related to the example I just gave
B:So many writers can't stick the landing. I know endings are hard, but so many endings, whether to just plotpoints or the story in general, are just unsatisfying.

I mean i realize its amateur, not professional work, but still its sad how many endings are let downs.

Honestly, this is very heartfelt, but this also comes across as a cartoonist drunken confession. That's all I can picture. It's too grandiose for Nick. This could work if it were a comedy, but as a serious piece I feel that Nick's character is way too dramatic (even if it is a twist).

You can still maintain that jagged emotional edge (which you honestly do wield well), if you brought down his theatrics a bit. Maybe even cut some parts about growing old and stuff like that, because it's too much fluff

the first two points make sense, however I'd like to offer my own interpretation of Nick's confession that I think justifies the 'cartoony' feel, as you call it.

While Nick is spouting these lines, it isn't him physically expressing them. These panels/line reflect his racing thoughts as they fire through his head. The caps as he panics thinking about what would happen if he doesn't confess? Conveying his real-time excitement and panic as these fears enter his mind and he has to deal with them. The over-acting, yelling, animated way Nick acts is a physical embodiment of the chaos of his emotions and attempts to process and control them as he prepares to answer Judy's question.

When we snap back to reality and Nick *actually* replies, he is much more reserved and in character.

Question on a scale 1 to EDGE how is this premise

[spoiler]A Young man loses his parents to a freak accident that no one can truly be blamed for. Searching for an outlet he decides to simply fight against anything he sees as incorrect and works to make the world a better place. As he grows he becomes one part Odd Jobs man doing whatever he can for people and one part private sleuth trying to solve any crimes he can. Though kind, honest and helpful, he remains distant with people, only helping them because he feels he should and never getting truly invested in them or letting them get close to him. Eventually, he gets an informant who helps him solve more and more crimes until the informant tells him of one very large criminal group that if he revealed would help a lot of people. He manages to sneak into the hide out with the informants help, only to realize that the informant has set him up the entire time as a means at trying to overthrow the crime boss and he is forced to flee after being wounded. He flees and realizes he can not return home lest he bring the criminals down on his family. He realizes that being a hero and solving crimes ultimately were done to make himself feel better about how powerless he was but resolves that he still made the correct choice even if he was used. What pissed me off the most about tumblr (when I used to post fics there for anotehr fandom) is the obscene ratio of reblogs:likes when comparing artwork to fanfic.

Fanfic would have lots of likes but very few reblogs. Artwork has shittons of likes AND shittons of reblogs. If a piece of fanfic and an piece of artwork have the same number of notes, gauranteed the artwork has more reblogs than the fanfic.

I'll never understand it. The only lesson I took away from tumblr is NEVER, EVER, EVER in a million years attach your self esteem to the number of notes. You will very quickly loose any confidence you have.
